"Great movie", then questions everything about the movie. Then changes the title from "First time watching Forrest Gump" to "Forrest Gump is a MASTERPIECE!"". 6 days after the film is explained to all your questions in the comments. Huge fan, that's why I noticed and said something. But, that was not genuine across the board boss.

@Logical Movie Reviews With MRLBOYD I understand that, but you criticized the movie the entire way through without understanding the depth of the meaning. Absolutely nothing wrong with that! But to change your title and opinion on the film based upon comments is misleading and fraudulent. You're essentially saying "I was wrong, but to put my video out to a further audience, I'll change things to make them watch a disingenuous reaction"

Lieutenant Dan was standing because he has spent so many years sitting, sitting in a wheelchair. He was played by Gary Sinise who was so touched by his portrayal of a disabled veteran that he formed a band that still performs to raise funds and awareness for disabled veterans. The name of the band, the Lt. Dan Band.

Forrest was the best part of Jenny's life. She wasn't able to overcome her childhood trauma for years. She did love him, even if not romantically, but felt she didn't deserved him. I believe it is Forrest's son. After he was conceived, Jenny still left and it wasn't about the money, because Forrest was already rich at that point. She could have stayed and been a rich man's wife if she wanted to. When she knew she was dying, she married him to legally secure custody of their son with Forrest. Even though he had money, I think it would have been difficult for him to get custody of Jr after Jenny died. Marrying Jenny made that easier. Also, Jenny and Forrest were always honest with each other. If Jr wasn't his son, Jenny would have told him. If she asked him to raise her son, or even just provide for him monetary, Forrest still would have done it - for her. She had no reason to lie to him.

Forrest is wealthy enough from that investment in a fruit company that he could have provided for his son (yes, I believe it is his and I really hadn't heard anyone opine that he may not be because the movie is either a fairy tale or a fable) without denting his wealth. Apple didn't start paying regular dividends until 2012 so he would have had to sell something, but I imagine at this time a big-time brokerage house would be managing his money and he wouldn't even notice the drain. (Money management used to be something only the very wealthy could afford, unlike today. Graduating HS in 1981 I can remember this era clearly.)

What people normally miss, is that Jenny was Forrest's rock in his formative years. She was there for him, teaching him how to read and saving him from solitude. He compares her to an angel, and for little Forrest, she was.

Jenny thought she was unworthy of Forrest because he was pure and she was, in her own view, the opposite of pure. Her father taught her that she was worthless. If you’ve known young women who were abused in that way by a parent or grandparent, you’ll know their emotional maturity stops developing pretty much at the age the trauma began - and that they go from one abusive adult relationship to another, always seeking to please the abuser who takes the place of the father.

Not always true. There's victims who worked on themselves in therapy and stopped patterns like choosing abusive partners and doing self destructive behaviors. In fact a lot of successful people came from abusive terrible upbringings. Look at Oprah! Your past does not = a life sentence of misery. And we are all talking about narcissistic abuse, gas lighting, how to spot red flags, how important boundaries are - as a society. Abusive things that used to be normalized are no longer tolerated either, like sexual harassment at work. Anyone can choose to work on themselves and build healthier relationships and communication with others in their life.

Jenny runs away from life, lt. Dan fights life. Forrest does like the feather at the beginning and goes wherever life brings him. That’s a movie where the main character doesn’t have an arc, it’s the people around him who change and get better.

@@zynuq I've always thought that about this movie. Forrest was usually always in the right places at the right time and just went wherever fate took him without thinking about it, because he's Forrest of course.

Jenny never asked Forrest for anything throughout their entire existence, until she had her life in order. Considering the life she had, that's commendable. Someone pretending to care would have taken him for his entire net worth. She left him with someone to love for the rest of his life. No accident that the movie ended with dad and son saying I love you.

Exactly. This is why I hate it when people say “Jenny used Forrest” She always did what she believed to be right as long as Forrest was involved.

Besides the things everyone else says about Jenny re: her tragic past, remember she was the first person to be nice to Forrest, the be his friend throughout their whole lives, and to defend him when needed. There is nothing to indicate she ever lied to him so why would she lie about the child? The child is his but she needed time to get her act together. And remember, Forrest was out running for like 3 years so she couldn't reach him sooner. Jenny did love Forrest (perhaps only really as a friend) but did not think herself worthy of his love. She thought he deserved better than her. I think the reason she asked Forrest to marry her when she did was not for money. (She could have married him when he asked her if it was all about money.) I believe it was because she knew Little Forrest was his son, that he would be a good father, and because she was dying, she wanted Forrest Sr. to have custody of Forrest Jr. Despite being messed up by her childhood and being seemingly incapable of love, she showed she loved Forrest in many ways, including by not getting involved with him when she knew she was so messed up. You're right in that she wouldn't have been good for Forrest when she was so messed up with drugs, alcohol, etc. but it's sad that more people can't have more empathy for her.

This is the last film I watched with my parents… I dragged them to the local theater, they never wanted to go out…it’s a special memory.. they both cried, and laughed with me watching one of my favorite movies ever🙏🏼💜

He loved Jenny from the first moment he saw her. She never treated him like he was any less intelligent than anyone else. It broke my heart that she treated him badly but without him she probably would have od’ed somewhere and no one would have cared. She was lucky to have him and everyone in the world needs to be loved as much as Forrest loved Jenny.

Ish. Her behavior is still absolutely repugnant, and those were HER choices. Nobody made her abandon him repeatedly. Nobody made her shoot up drugs or have unprotected sex over and over again. She made those decisions. You're responsible for how you choose to deal with the pain in your life, and Jenny chose everyone and everything bur Forrest until she was out of time and out of options, and was dying. Then, finally, she came to him. That's not a happy ending, and it is only because Forrest is a little bit unawares of the cruelty of human beings that he doesn't see it that way. We as the audience are made very aware of it, though.

Forrest had three friends in life: Jenny, Bubba, and Lt. Dan. Forrest was a friendly, positive, caring individual, but had no one else. Jenny was his rock, but both had personal problems. Jenny had emotional trauma. Forrest was special needs. All the Jenny hate for having her own issues to work through and not hooking up with her special needs friend always seemed a bit odd to me.

Yes Jenny did horrible things, and made some very bad choices, no one excuses her behaviour, but many people can see there are reasons for her behaviour and choices despite them being wrong, and we give her grace

@@mumofmany1498 Most of the bad choices she made only affected her, it had nothing to do with Forrest. Forrest was living his life fine even when Jenny wasn't in it, while her life spiraled downhill for some time.

My father, who was in Vietnam, says this movie is the most accurate depiction of what it was like. And he has seen them all.

This is an exceptional movie for sure. It takes a look at life from the perspective of a couple of characters. And life just happens for them... Jenny did what she did to survive it and barely lived any of it while Forrest didn't want much out of life but lived all of it. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get...

To be fair the director made sure to have Forrest and his son have the same mannerisms so you could physically tell that he is the father.

A child could never even meet their biological father, yet share a certain mannerism they have because genetics are powerful. I’ve seen it happen myself and it’s common knowledge. Do some research.

A lot of reactors have been confused about the boat's direction. I think an unsteered boat will end up with the keel or sails locked to one side by wind and tide, which means it travels in a circle.

She didn’t want to be with Forrest because he was famous or had money. She grew as a character and realized and apologized for how she treated Forrest. She was dying and wanted her child to be with his father. Forrest was the father.

As a child Jenny was Forrest’s friend when nobody else wanted to be. Unfortunately he would always be a reminder of her childhood. It gets complicated, and there was no Robin Williams to tell her “It wasn’t your fault.” She’s always in the run from her past and he’s part of that despite being someone she doesn’t need to run from.

A key thing to remember about Jenny is the bus scene where she is introduced. She was the only one willing to give Forrest a chance, to treat him like a person, and then she stuck by him all through childhood and adolescence. Through that we see that she has a special kind of goodness that is akin to Forrest's, though hidden by trauma and defenses. The narrative makes a point that there are only a handful of people who treat Forrest as anything other than a freak, weirdo, or at best a useful idiot. His mother, Jenny, Bubba, and eventually Lt. Dan. Each of those people was special to Forrest for that reason, and he had undying loyalty to them. We see Jenny hit rock bottom when she almost falls from the balcony. She had suicidal ideation her entire life, but when she almost dies she wants to live. From that scene she begins to heal herself. She seeks out Forrest, the only person who was ever good to her, and repairs their relationship. She has a loving sexual experience for perhaps the first time in her life. When she leaves, she says she isn't running. She's not running, she seeking out self-improvement, stability, and continued healing. The next time we see her, after nearly four years, she has transformed her life and herself. She has a loving home for the first time, a steady job for the first time, she has kicked her drug habits and self-destructive habits, and she is shown to be a loving mother to her son. About Little Forrest, Forrest wouldn't have cared if he was another man's son. Because he was Jenny's son, Forrest would take care of him without question. Jenny would know that, based on Forrest's attitude and behavior throughout their entire lives, and wouldn't need to lie. That being said, the filmmakers do make it pretty clear that he is Forrest's son.

I've seen this so many times but Tom Hanks still gets me crying at the end

I think one of the things most of us miss the first time is how important Jenny was in Forrest’s life. The only person who accepted him and treated him like a person instead of a dummy. Only someone who has been hurt can be that accepting. Someone who does not understand boundaries or limits.

Remember Jenny is a survivor of trauma and hates herself...you Can't love another person until you love yourself

They were best friends. All she ever wanted was his calming company. The only thing she ever did wrong was to leave without saying goodbye.

I can forgive all the early stuff but withholding his child until she was dying is pretty bad. Had she been healthy would she have ever told him?

I understand the hate for Jenny, but I still have a bit of a soft spot for her because she was really messed up but she was not really a bad person, just lost. Forrest was her rock. She felt that she did not deserve him so she made sure she didn't. A truly tragic character.

None of that excuses being a terrible person, though. A lot of people experience childhood trauma, but they don't use it as an excuse to be an asshole. Then Jenny pawning off a kid onto Forrest after ignoring him for years and running away, AGAIN... And making Forrest believe that kid was his when it probably wasn't his. She only left the kid with Forrest because he's the only positive male role model she acquainted with her entire life. And to your point, if she kept leaving because she didn't think she was good enough for Forrest, then why did she keep coming back? She only showed back up in his life when she needed things. Again, terrible human being.

I'll just say again that it's no excuse to live the rest of your life as the worst version of yourself, making your problems everyone's problems. I do feel for Jenny, but I can't forgive the fact that she only used Forrest when necessary. Especially pawning a kid off on him... I hope that theory isn't right and that really is his son, but I have a feeling it's true.

@@MFBloosh regardless of the paternity, Jenny was likely only contacting Forrest due to her illness. I agree that after a point you can't keep using your abuse to justify abusing others. I worked at a young adult mental health center and so many youth had trauma and being empathetic but saying that not healing and hurting others makes them an abuser now

The head tilt ect, it's a small detail sure but you wouldn't go out of your way to include a small detail like that if there wasn't something you wanted to show with it. Personally I think Jenny knew that she should stay out of Forrest's live for his sake after she moved with him for a while, she kept things non romantic then until Forrest opened up to her and my guess is she realised that Forrest couldn't move on with her still around and had sex with him before leaving for good. She was pregnant and still kept out of his life for years even though she knew he would take her and their son in a heart beat, sacrificing an easy peaceful life for Forrest's sake and finally chose to reveal the son to Forrest when she knew she was going to die and wanted her son to grow up with Forrest knowing it's the best option for his future. She was fucked up beyond all belief before that point sure but even then she tried to keep that to herself and only ran into Forrest from time to time. The worst part about it all to me is that both Forrest's probably carry some form of HIV from her but even then HIV wasn't understood back much then so she really couldn't have known any better.

The reason it felt like all the things he did in his life were just filler until they get to the Jenny parts is because that's how he felt about it. He didn't care about any of the amazing things he got to experience all that mattered to him was the times he spent with Jenny.

When Jenny tells Forrest he didn't know what love is, I believe it's because she has been shown by her dad that love is physical touch, that her body is what she has best to offer. I imagine that's why she conceived little Forrest and left: in her mind she was giving Forrest the best she had and leaving the next day as to not burden him any further. Then she had little Forrest and she learned a whole new type of love which she was willing to share with Forrest (dad).

Well Forrest did touch her breast at the dorm . Although she was messed up in the head from the child abuse she was toying with Forrest.

You only saw him cry once. The running was cathartic, he was dealing with all the loss he had throughout his life.

As a DV/SV Survivor, I understand Jenny. Trauma Survivors tend to think lowly of themselves and think they don't deserve good hearted people like Forrest. And, she cares so deeply for him and wants the best for him she is afraid if she did leave the friend zone, she would ruin his life.

One thing regarding Jenny. I feel like it's important to note that even though she could have, she never took advantage of Forrest for his money. She relied on him emotionally, but never came asking for financial support.

I loved this movie and your reaction was different from mine. Forrest was simple. For him, what he understood of the world was very simplistic and he just didn't pick up on subtleties or complex meanings. Love for him was simple, so his feelings for Jenny were simple. The reality is, he was sweet, but not equipped, mentally or emotionally, to be in any kind of relationship with her. I don't judge Jenny because she did her best not to lie to him or lead him on. Nothing she did was premeditated or malicious. We are viewing her life through the lenses of 2023, where mental health and therapy are a real option. This girl lived through horrific childhood abuse, and acted out the pain of that trauma in some of the most predictable ways, addiction, promiscuity, seeking abusive relationships, and turning from good relationships because deep down she didn't feel worthy of anything good. What therapy was readily available during the time period of this movie? Even today, people have the same reactions and resulting behaviors and instead of compassion they are judged, making them feel even more the worthlessness their abuser caused. I think instead of hating her, and many others like her, we as a society need to realize that we need to stop judging others and actually learn how to care for those who are hurting. God forbid we set aside our selfishness in order to help each other. One day it might be you that needs unmerited compassion.

I mean, if a person develops a reputation as a slut and an addict, it kind of makes sense that people would call them out on it. It doesn't matter what happened in their youth, it was their decision to do all of that. Blaming it on their abuser is basically not owning up to the decisions they made. The abuser may have put them on the path but it was their decision to continue to walk on it. If they expect compassion and sympathy for the decisions they made by saying "oh it was all my abuser's fault", even if they have ready access to therapy, it isn't going to help. Those are the kinds of people that can always find someone else to blame. I don't mind Jenny as a character but I do hate her very real concept. The kind of girl that has fun with all the bad boys only to settle down with someone stable after she has had her fun and found out that it has all started going downhill, in this case someone too mentally deficient to call her out on it. Naturally, she never owed him anything and frankly, his obsession is disturbing to me. However, she very much took advantage of it until he wanted more than she was willing to give. And yes, I believe that was the real decision she left after the marriage proposal because while she knows she's damaged goods, no one is good enough to spare a person that except in fiction. They always choose to bring the other person down with them. Which brings us to your last sentence. Unmerited compassion isn't a thing. We as humans are incapable of it. Compassion is always fueled by something, whether it is shared trauma, religion, or internet clout. Would it be nice if we could do that without needing a reason? Sure but so would a lot of things we are incapable of as a species. Guess we just need to keep wishing for it in internet commentary.

Wonderful words. How I feel exactly about the situation.

Aside from people not often understanding that Jenny was a survivor, feeling damaged & unworthy, I think many miss the subtle way the movie shows the arc of her journey here. She hit bottom when she was standing on the ledge, and then she went back home to find Forrest, who was her touchstone. You can see by the way she looked & dressed that she had turned the corner, but still had a way to go on the journey to loving HERSELF. Possibly becoming a mother helped her stay the course. Most people understand Lt. Dan's arc in the movie, and are happy to see him come out the other side, but most people aren't as forgiving to Jenny. I guess in most people's minds there isn't as much chance for reform when you are a woman? As a survivor myself, I understand Jenny's character. It took me awhile to get it together, but the only person I ever really hurt along the way was myself. I always pushed away people who treated me well because it made me feel uncomfortable & unworthy. Everyone watches this movie acting like Forrest was heartbroken when Jenny would 'run,' he wasn't (until she died, that is). He lived a fuller life & had more experiences than most people could dream of. And in the end, he was given the greatest gift of all, to be a loving father to his son. We should all be so lucky.

The man you thought was an artist was John Lennon. He was a member of one of the Biggest singing groups ever, The Beatles. He also had many hits as a solo artist too. Forrest ran for those latter years to forget the pain of Jenny's leaving, but Jenny will always be in his mind and heart.

I've watched many, many reactions to this movie (one of my all-time favorites) and the frequent utter hatred of Jenny just baffles me. Others have gone into great detail about the damage done to her by her own father so I'll just add: remember that she was in elementary school when we meet her and the abuse was already an ongoing thing. Is it really so hard to understand why she'd be a mess of a human being? But I believe she did love Forrest very much. He was the only good thing in her entire life. Lastly, for those who say she hid the child from him, no she didn't. Remember that he ran for over 3 years. He wasn't reachable. I'm glad people love Forrest as much as I do, but honestly, it just breaks my heart that so many people have zero compassion for Jenny.

Understand where you coming from I didn't care at all for the final comments at the end of the reaction. But everyone has a right to think and feel the way they choose. The thing about movie reactions like this is that you're commenting so much on what you're seeing really taking in the entire story and experience of the film. Just like you kept saying I don't understand why he was running even though Forest explained why he was in that time to get over what he was feeling for Jenny leaving. Hopefully he'll watch the film again completely without commenting and just absorb in its entirety and he'll have a change of heart on some things

Wow. Limit his existence? How? Forrest had a good life. Despite his mental limitations he thrived. Forrest was a special person so good and interesting things happened for him. For every kindness he showed to the people in his life he was rewarded. A broken heart is hardly the end of the world. He now has someone to love and care for. Jenny knew she was broken but we all need help sometimes. Forrest was a love, comfort and safety when she needed it. There is nothing terrible about that.

I mean, it's a little terrible. She was only a part of his life when she needed it, taking advantage of his rather misguided childhood crush/obsession, knowing he would take her back no matter what. Now what if the kid needs a donor later on in his life and Forrest finds out he's not compatible? He's too simple so he'll love the kid anyway and he won't be able to process it properly anyway, but a normal guy would be questioning whether he ever had her to begin with or if he was just a stable support when she didn't want to die alone and needed someone to care for her kid when she was gone.

Jenny was the counter story of Gump. He was the hero of his life and she was the victim in hers. She was also counter culture representation. Took me a few watches to fully understand she was playing the cards she was delt- not an evil manipulator. She had to learn real love while Forrest always knew. Fun movie fact- the movie was WAY over budget and Tom Hanks' brother actually did the running across America stuff. That's why they added the beard.

The restaurant Bubba Gump Shrimp has everything to do with this movie. On the tables there's the license plates one says " Run Forrest Run" the other reads " Stop Forrest Stop and when you want a waiter you flip it to " Stop Forrest Stop" otherwise you leave it on " Run Forrest Run", the servers ask trivia questions about the movie.

John Lennon's death was in every history book I had to read from 8th grade until graduation of college. I find it very difficult to believe that people don't know who John Lennon is.

So for a first time watcher it makes a lot of sense to think of Jenny as a drag on Forrest's life. However i'd like you to consider that Jenny never did anything bad to Forest, he simply was forever in love with her. Ya she wouldnt return that love for a long time but other than that she never did anything maliciously. They were best friends and he was a source of comfort for her throughout her traumatic childhood. She lived a hard life while being with men who showed her "love" like her father cause that is how she understood love. After having the realization that her life isnt what she wants it to be she returns home and to her last known source of comfort. She just wanted to see and be with a friend. Forrest asks her to marry him, when he's already insanely rich, she turns him down. This shows she wasnt interested in his money or fame. She says "You dont want to marry me" showing that she doesnt feel worthy of forrest. She leaves the next morning because the exact reason you said. She only knows how to run away when things get hard, so she ran thinking she was hurting Forrest by tempting him when she doesnt feel worthy of his love. She did get pregnant that night and it seems weird she didnt try to get in touch with him for so long but its because he started running across the country. its like the 80's or early 90's at that point and it would be incredibly hard to contact someone running across country for 3 years straight with no cell phone or real plan on how to receive messages. Jenny is a complicated character and you have to take into account her whole story when thinking about her actions. She always cared for Forrest and never tried to hurt him. She just had a whole lot of trauma to work through.

"What is that accent?" Tom Hanks didn't actually plan to do that voice for the character, but once he heard the Mississippi accent of the kid playing young Forrest, he decided to emulate him. And it became an iconic part of the character.

The musician was John Lennon. He was one of the Beatles. "Imagine" was his biggest hit from his solo career. It's an anthem about world peace. With regard to Jenny, she befriended and stood by Forrest when the world was cruel and beat him, traumatized him when he was crippled and developmentally disabled. She did this until he was able to grow and brake free from his bondage (his leg braces) and take off running. He did the same for her until she was able to break free from her bondage and finally sought comfort from him.

Note Jenny doesn't say I don't want to marry you. She said You don't want to marry me. She didn't want his money. She never took money from him. She always ran when scared. She told Forrest to run when it's scary.

I am surprised by your complete lack of empathy for Jenny.

40 minutes of you ranting about Jenny... it shows reveals a lot about your character...

This. Reactor dudes going full red pill on Jenny (not a real person and written by a man btw) is a whole genre now.

Jenny accused Forrest of not knowing what love is, but in reality was the one that didn't know what love was. The reason she stayed away from Forrest was because she loved him and did not want their relationship to become like the abuse she received from others. I think she contacted him at the end because she had finally healed. Some people wonder why she took so long to tell him about their son, forgetting that he was unreachable for over 3 years on the road.

I think you should watch movie again because you missed a lot of nuances and reasons for things that are clued throughout the movie. You don’t understand Jennies character and maybe Forrest’s character also. Jenny was depressed and full of self loathing after being raped repeatedly by her father during childhood. But she always loved Forrest, was his defender and champion, but didn’t feel she was worthy of him which made her run from him and her memories and feelings that she was dealing with. People didn’t get therapy back then, especially mental if you don’t have healthcare in poor rural Alabama. She’s was slowly getting tired of running and was starting to heal when she came back to Forrest that last time. But after he asked her to Marry him, she got spooked again and ran. Her son made her fully heal, and yes, it was Forrest son as they had all the same mannerisms. They didn’t have DNA testing back then.

You're wrong about Jenny. She was so broken that she did not know how damaged she was and did not want to bring that to Forrest. She was so emotionally shattered that she had no idea about what Love actually was. She did not want to hurt him. But we all have faults and should be given the chance to get better and not be judged.

I’m always looked at Dan at the wedding a different way then it felt like you did. I always thought he was the only one standing because he wanted to stand. He had spent so much time with no choice but to sit he probably avoided it after getting his magic legs.

My favorite part of that scene often gets overlooked. During the war scenes, he said some pretty racist things about the Vietnamese people and then at Forrest's wedding he shows up with a Vietnamese fiancee. I'm surprised at how many people don't notice it. A little bit of redemption for the character.

This movie exists outside of modern day social problems and drama. Jenny was true to Forrest, Forrest was disabled and became a millionaire, Lt. Dan recovered from substance abuse and depression...it's a feel good movie. The moment you bring the real world into it it falls apart, but just watching it allows us to feel some respite from the real world, it allows us to feel joy we wouldn't otherwise feel...as long as you shut your brain off to how unrealistic it is. Edit: It's 110% his son.

Jenny had always liked Forrest not just because he was “famous”. She wanted to see him because she knew she was dying and wanted him to meet his son.

Anything could have happened and they don't specifically say how old he is. Of course, he probably is Forrest's since it wouldn't be in this kind of script. It's just more realistic to assume otherwise since she had been ho'ing around prior to her showing up again and possibly afterward.

Or do you mean in the sense that he completely embraced the kid as his? I can give you that. And like I said previously, it's not that kind of movie. The writers wouldn't have thrown that curveball, though the author of the books might have been tempted. He was quirky. My comments were largely based on if they were actual people here in the real world rather than idealized figments.

I get not liking Jenny, but then again, it's more complex than that, not only from her, but from Forrest's side, she can do no wrong in his eyes, she's the love of his life. Now.. as for rage, the rage comes from you not knowing who John Lennon, of The Beatles, is.

Yours is the first reaction I've heard questioning the paternity of little Forrest. Jenny didn't need to lie. Forrest would have taken care of her child regardless of who the father was. He loved Jenny that much.

I think the scene when Forrest first meets little Forrest and they are in front of the TV, their mannerisms mimicking each other is supposed to dispell those questions of paternity. He's the first person or reactor that I've heard question that. Even the anti jenny ones don't question that part. Usually, they are complaining she never told Forrest while he was running all over the US for over 3yrs.

He shows Elvis how to dance and gives John Lennon the idea for Imagine! This movie is loaded with Forrest bumping into historical and pop culture figures. It's 100% more entertaining when you recognize all those moments. One of my favorite bits doesn't involve any of that though. I like when the Army drill instructor tells Gump he's a genius because of how he answered the question. Everywhere else he's low IQ with some people calling him stupid. In the Army he's a genius and hero. I'm still not sure if that was supposed to be a compliment to the Army or an insult. I think I read somewhere that Robert Zemeckis likes to have an opening shot that relates to the overall theme of the movie. Maybe that feather is Forrest, being carried along by life. It all seems random but that feather is there at the beginning and there at the end, so maybe it's not so random after all. People need to have more empathy for Jenny. If she was that bad a person she could have easily exploited Forrest but she didn't.

I'm sure this has been said multiple times already, but screw it. I will add another. Jenny was Forrest's only friend growing up. So you could say she is pretty important to him. Jenny grew up poor. And she was also physically abused and sexually molested as a child. She is a product of all that. So perhaps you can show a little sympathy and understanding for the way she is. And you are right, she did need therapy. But she grew up in a time when therapy wasn't nearly as available as it is today. You also keep insinuating that the only reason Jenny keeps coming back is so she can get a piece of Forrest's fortune. Does she ever ask for money? No. Does she steal his money? No. Does she take advantage of Forrest in order to get him to buy her nice things, like jewelry or cars or clothes? No. The only thing she takes advantage of is Forrest's friendship. Dude, this hasn't been your best reaction video.

Not sure if anyone has said it yet, but the feather at the beginning and end is a metaphor for Forest. He was a feather in the wind, just going wherever life took him.

I've always enjoyed your reaction videos. Though I think you miss some of the points in this movie by looking at it through the lens of 2023. The movie was released in 1994 and spanned a time from 1951 until 1982. Forrest's life is blessed because of his pure soul and how he always sees the best in people, the way children do. Jenny's part of the story is tragedy because there weren't any tools to help victims at that time and so she struggles to find out how to forgive herself for the shame that society at the time would have placed on her. She didn't know what healthy relationships were because she was never able to see them in her own life. While Forrest is the pivot point in the movie, the narrator through which we see everything all the other characters are really the focus of the story. How he saves Lt. Dan and never stops believing that he is more than his disability when Lt. Dan can't see past his disability. How in the end he saves Jenny and gives her peace and probably only uncompromised love in her life. How is keeps his promise to the only other friend he makes (Bubba) and makes sure that his family is taken care of. To me, its a story of how Forrest saves other people until in the end, his son (it doesn't matter if little Forrest is his or not biologically, because it doesn't matter to Forrest) finally makes Forrest believe that he can be more too, a father/parent.

Despite Jenny's flaws, she never lied to Forrest and doesn't need to. Forrest would have been there for her and her son even if he wasn't the father. He and Jenny were truly best friends but she had her own issues, like a traumatic childhood with a alcoholic abusive including sexually father and was running away from herself and living a self-destructive life which had nothing to do with Forrest. She was always good to him and never did him any wrong except the last time when she took off without telling him but that was because, she felt unworthy of his love and got scared. She needed to straighten herself out first and she eventually did and becoming a mother may have helped played a role. Some get on Jenny for not telling Forrest about their son sooner but, Forrest had been running over three years so she may not have been able to get in touch with him. In the end, she made him happy and he made her happy and she left him a son to love after she was gone.

Amazing how everyone judges Jenny's character - it's not that she is my favorite person - but the lack of empathy for the torment she had as a child (when you form your self value and worth and trust of humanity) she never asked him for anything but their friendship - and she is the only one who valued Forrest growing up besides his mother. I actually feel she is a better person through all her troubles than a lot of people I know - who she hurt was herself. I actually cannot understand how you judge a person's character. In the end she had very little peace in her life. You obviously have no understanding of what trauma like that kind of thing does to a person for their entire life usually - I am speaking of real torment - having seen it.

"I wanna go home.". That line really gets to me. An innocent and kind person that didn't even realize what they were getting into until it's too late. Most people aren't as naive as Bubba. But I still think it's an apt narrative for majority of the teens who sign up for army duties.

Good Grief Jenny was a very broken woman .... LoL rage no but understanding and compassion .... Forrest does deserve better I agree but look at whom he ended up with ❤️❤️ amazing Love 💃🔥👏👏👏... Oh my God stop 🧐🧐🧐🧐

There’s a clip I saw on instagram where a server at a restaurant brings a couple a big bowl of ice cream and they tell them that they ordered it for the table behind them and when the server walks over to them, the couple says, “lt. Dan, we got you some ice cream!” And the person at the table behind them turns around and it’s Gary sinise

I keep being surprised that people that come across Forrest Gump recently immediately think Jenny is evil. She is never shown to be evil, she is just lost. I also think a big theme in the movie is friendship, unconditional friendship.

Forrest partook in or kicked off just about every major pop culture even in his lifetime. He started the running / physical fitness hobby It was a major thing in the late 70s/early 80s. Several people publicly ran from coast to coast. Its just connecting Forrest to the time-line of Americana.

The running segment has everything to do with Forrest Gump's pain when Jenny left him. That was the way Forrest dealt with that pain. Other people go to drugs and alcohol.

Never underestimate the importance of supportive parenting. A child that is taught their value is in using their body to satisfy the desires of an authority figure in their life....will have a very hard time unlearning it. She "didn't know what love' was. It's a good movie to learn empathy for people that have had a different life experience than our own.

I had a partner like Jenny, she also kept running away even though we were great together. It made no sense. Then one day she got therapy and explained what was going on. People, when raised with abusive parents (doesn't have to be sexual, can also be emotional), due to of unresolved trauma gravitate towards abusive relationships and unhealthy behavior. And not only that, they avoid healthy relationships because they find them unfamiliar and scary. It's actually a really common thing how we seek what we're used to, even if it's bad.

I don't think you're a bad person for wanting to protect Forrest that's how most people feel but, I do think you have never experienced what it's like to be sexually, physically or mentally abused as a child. I myself never experienced it but it doesn't take a lot to understand that from childhood the feeling of love represents pain, they want to love but love hurts.

I agree 100% about Jenny in the film. When I first saw this movie as a child, I identified with Forrest and his relationship with Jenny, Though now that I am older and have grown wiser in my years, It's pretty obvious that they had a toxic relationship after college. She would come and go throughout his life. knowing full well that he absolutely loved her. She used him as an emotional crutch during her rehabilitation and prior to that, the whole time during the war, she never once received them due to the censorship of the letters during the war. She also moved around a lot. they made it a point to show that along with Forrest, She was living her own life. it's kind of messed up how ever time their lives intersected, Jenny was always doing horribly or was trying to get better, until the end. Even her ending is somewhat manipulative. She kept Forrest Jr. from knowing his father and visa versa for what, the first ten years of the boy's life? I mean... why? why did she not tell Forrest she was pregnant? If you ask me, I think she knew that she was bad for Forrest. She knew she used him and manipulated him all her life. Then, when she became pregnant with his child, she decided that going to Forrest would end up being the exact thing she knew she was, a user. She used him and when she was done, she left, almost like he was a drug to her. something she could rely on to always be a rock and stationary in her whirling world of chaos. At the end, the last ten years of her life was settling down and raising her child, which it does she she was clean, she was providing an enriched environment for Forrest Jr. to grow and it seems that he knew manners, could read and was showing promise in being a well developed boy in a more modern time. I think she did her best in life, but in the end, yeah. It's kind of sad. Forrest deserved more. He deserved a better woman in his life, besides his momma. Though, If you really want to get into the weeds, I think it's possible that it was his momma that was the reason Jenny left him behind so many time. I can see, much like they showed his momma doing everything she could to make sure he was safe and had a chance like everyone else, She was his protector when he was a boy and looked out for him when he was a younger man. I would put money down that if she thought that jenny was trying to use Forrest, She would put a stop to that quick. She would tell jenny to stay away in more choice words than Forrest would likely not know. That could explain Jenny's constant need to get away from Forrest and why she showed up more often after his momma died.

The restaurant is based on this movie. I got free drinks for my table there once. The waitress asked us 8 or 9 trivia questions about this movie and I answered them all.....sometimes before she finished the question.

So let me figure this out... YOU think that after you see Jenny suicidal and at rock bottom she then turns and just goes back to Forest because as you say she "decided the only person who can take me back and make me happy is the person i've ignored my entire life." ... So why doesn't she go right to him? Cause you really seem to have missed the fact that after you see Jenny on that balcony, you see Lt. Dan join Forest and they fish for awhile and it sucks. That keeps happening up until the storm and then they start building the business! Woo then they keep working and seemingly building the business... No idea how far into it actually is but hey are at least wearing their own merch, but then his mother dies. He stops working and instead is honored by the town with a fine job mowing the lawn. They get invested in apple, he spends money making the town better via the church and hospital. Gives Bubba's momma Bubba's share... And then he decided to cut the grass for free... And ya know that was finally when Jenny shows back up. Man that seems like some time passed... Maybe enough time for Jenny to have done some work on herself. Could explain why she shows up in normal clothes, clean and with only a single bag seemingly to her name. She winds up finally able to rest in an environment where feels safe but she knows she is damaged and doesn't want to put that on Forest so when he asks her to marry him she says 'you don't want to marry me'. She doesn't say no. She is saying she isn't worth him just like you recognize, and while I don't like her sleeping with him and leaving I do think there is a reason the film has her say "I'm not running" to the taxi driver. Like you mention she has been running her entire life, this is the film saying she is resolved to fixing herself... Woo Finally! Right? But seemingly she doesn't want to do that with Forest or maybe doesn't want to leach off him. I figure that bit is up for interpretation but any way you slice it she is looking to better herself. I think this leads into why, once Forest starts running and you do eventually see Jenny again she is working as a waitress. In a normal job. In a normal town. Trying to be a normal person. Oh and lets not forget, even if you think that the kid isn't actually Forests, which BTW is entirely out of your own damn head as the movie doesn't present ANY evidence otherwise.... But even if you DO think that she still had to have raised him well enough for them to be at the point you see them in once Forest shows up and meets his son for the first time. Ya know... Living in a decent home.. With friends, a job. Seemingly happy. What a Super Villan. Honestly, it would seem almost as if all of this information was either missed or ignored to get at the craziness I just witnessed.

There's so many great scenes in this movie making it hard to have a favorite one only I will always have a special place for the scene where Forrest runs for the touchdown and smashes into the band members as he keeps running. Lieutenant Dan is a great character..as far as Jenny..sometimes there is no choice if you love who you love..Jenny was always afraid of it..because of trauma .. she loved Forrest always but was afraid of commiting to anything serious

1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune💲💲 2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis. 3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks. 4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that. 5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around. 6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date. 5. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes)😋 8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony.. 9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his. 10. At the rally Forrest says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that." 11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking. 13. "Sometimes, I guess, there're aren't enough rocks" 14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis. 15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that" 16 Keep in mind if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this incredible journey.

Jenny's relationship with Forrest was pure - she never tricked or took advantage of him. She didn't commit to him or stay with him until she was near death because she knew that he was not equipped to deal with her damaged personality, & with her, his life would have been miserable. She knew he would want to take care of little Forrest & would be a good father to him, so she married Forrest in the end to make sure that he had custody of little Forrest. She was the best friend to Forrest that she was capable of being from the time they met until she died. The story of Forrest & Jenny is sad but beautiful, a true tragedy.

I'm not surprised at all how you reacted to Jenny and most reactors I have seen that have watched this movie have the same feeling I sort of feel the same way towards her But unfortunately, there is a very dark place when Drugs get involved you not only damage yourself but people around you and connected to you And for some Drug addiction is very hard to break and people who do try do fail and have to try again and again and the very sad thing is Many people in the world Do not understand unless they have been there themselves ... " And that's all I have to say about that "

She had problems long before the drugs. The dogs were one of the results of her problems.

It’s a “dramedy.” He’s I’m so many historic moments because it’s about a man, a pure soul, who finds himself in extraordinary situations and is too innocent to know just exactly how extraordinary they are… As for Jenny, she went through trauma, but your past doesn’t have to decide your future. That works both for her childhood and her young adulthood. She came to Forrest in Alabama to get clean, to make her life better, to get on track. And she knew Forrest would be their for her, she was his rock as a child when he needed it most, and he was hers as an adult when she needed it. She’s allowed to grow and change as well. Of all the scenes that break me, it’s when he says, “Is he smart, like…like me?” Because then you know that HE knew, the entire time, that he wasn’t. And that’s why he’s extraordinary. By the way, it’s not HIV, it’s Hep C…

He achieves everything BECAUSE Jenny is always with him. He knows the good in her. She always protected him, even from herself. The thoughts of love for her kept him going, and his goodness saved her in the end. She tried to push him away to save him from her self destructiveness due to a childhood of her father raping her ffs. You try to survive such a mental hell. I do daily, and it is hard. I could easily have been like Jenny. There but for the grace of God...❤❤️‍🩹❤

I typed out a whole long passage of my thoughts but I try to be respectful and kind so I erased it. So I'll limit my speech to this: Empathy and Compassion.

Jenny taught Forrest to run from the very beginning which is what she does throughout the entire movie.

yes he is physically running, and she is emotionally running away.

I think he was expecting Lt. Dan to bring his own chair, hence he was the only one without a chair provided

excellent theory.. But I'm sure they could have him brought a chair from the house. I'm wondering if prosthetics were advanced enough to have hinge joints in the knees. Maybe they only stood up straight which is why he walked with a limp and probably has to take them off to sit.

Jenny is the perfect example of hurt people hurt, people. Its not always with intent but it happens. When your view of yourself is so low that you can't imagine being worth anything to anyone it easy to just leave. You think that person won't miss you or even notice that you're gone. I'm not saying anything she did was right, or excusing any of it away. She owed Forest a massive apology.

My personal theory is that he was incapable of coping with jenny leaving him without letting him know. When he didnt know what to do he always resorted to running, the only advice he ever recieved. I think he had so much pent up anger and frustration that he used running as an outlet to deal with his more complex emotions. It became a sense of therapy for him.

Okay, I understand the Misery reaction now. I'd like to think that what a lot of commenters were trying to say is that they can empathize with Jenny. I can as well, as I've been down the spiral of childhood trauma leading to drug addiction, alcoholism, etc... I think what many commenters haven't elaborated on properly is that this doesn't excuse her behavior. She was still a terrible person, even if occasionally well-intentioned. We're all different people when we're in those spirals, and we've all fkd people over, but in the end it's about owning our actions instead of blaming them on our addictions or trauma, or the people who caused them.

Oh he got called POS and misogynistic for not defending JeNNY. And the emails are just wow. Imagine what people say when nobody except him would see it.

I don't think Jenny saw Forrest on TV and liked that he was famous. When she left his house it was because she knew she was bad for him, she was removing herself. But when she realized she was pregnant he was running. In a time without cellphones, she had no way to get ahold of him until she saw on the news that he had gone home. She also just wanted to marry him to make sure that Forrest Jr. had somewhere to go, she knew she was dying. (Of hepatitis c, not aids, it turns out)

Jenny and Forest weren't together except for one time. Just because Forest loved her doesn't mean anything. All their lives she never said they were a couple and she never promised him anything so she doesn't owe him anything.

One of my all time favorite movies of all time! Another, from that great year in cinema 1994, is the comedy Clerks.

I was 11yrs old just crying. Like real talk, I didnt take vacation until I was 32yrs old because I thought I was terrible. This movie is amazing we all need to be more like Bubba and Gump, just a little.
