Former Stig, Ben Collins, on that Top Gear crash, Grand Tour & being Vin Diesel
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I chat with the former Stig, Ben Collins, about why the Koenigsegg he drove on Tog Gear crashed, his thoughts on The Grand Tour, if he repairs his own cars and the time he had to be Vin Diesel.
Also we talk about his new Book "How to Drive", his work on the computer game Project Cars, the time he helped Clarkson, Hammond and May with their Live show, his work on the Fast & Furious films and his favourite race track in the UK

I’ve always thought Koenigsegg was the most over-rated super car and that the company owner is a bullshit artist of the first order. I believe not a word of their claims regarding horsepower or top speed. Regarding the latter, they crashed a Nürburgring trying to set a lap record due to a faulty front brake locking up at 170 mph. In this interview Stig, the most meticulous driver, attributes his crash of one of these things to ineffective brakes. That’s a pretty scathing criticism of a supercar. And it confirms to me that it’s not a good idea to buy a supercar built by a skeleton crew in an old aircraft hangar, whose CEO lies at Trumpian levels. (On Jay Leno's KZread car show, Leno complimented Koenigsegg on running a car company at his young age. Koenigsegg replied that he was 37. I looked him up on Wikipedia and at the time of that interview he was 45.)
@rarenium2500

That car started out as a kit-car then the company, (koenigsegg), bought the body design and stated that they had designed it them self, they made a few different redesigns and called it their own..

Collins' role as the Stig was about way more than just doing timed laps and driving the celebrities around. In his book "man in the white suit" Collins told that when the idea of the Jet-car came up he went "That has to be Hammond to do it." because Collins knew that of all three Hammond is the fittest and because of the immense forces that come with driving a jet car, being in peak condition was the number one thing. Collins then asked about Hammond's racing gear and then hooked Hammond up with Alpine suits, because as the Stig Collins knew about those suits, was endorsed by them and was familiar with how tough they are. So if you look at the footage of the crash, you see Hammond in a very similar racing suit that Collins wore as the Stig. In fact, it was those recommendations which saved Hammond's life. The fact that Hammond is in peak physical shape and that he was wearing the suit and Helmet that Collins said he should wear, was what saved him.

Well they said in the first episode that because Amazon is American they wanted an American driver (presumably to appeal to US viewers)... it wasn’t necessarily their call. Ofc under the right circumstances I’m sure they would have hired him again.
Read "How to Drive" 2-3 times while I was working in my driving licence. One more time just after passing and recently again. In sure I will be coming back to it many times again, being a responsible driver, learning to become a really good one. It's funny, to the point, full of invaluable information that stays in memory and pop up in your head while you drive. Absolutely recommended!
Tip, when the person you're interviewing starts giving you an answer DON'T INTERRUPT!!!!!!!!

James Robert I thought he did quite well actually. Have certainly seen less competent interviewers and for his first interview it was very good.
I would also have wished to have "the Ben Collins" on GT (as they suggested in the prequel), but I had read that Amazon required the driver to be American in order of appealing to US viewers. Definitely not the right choice... I am absolutely sure "the American" is an excellent driver, but I always hit mute when I watch an episode for the 2nd time and onward. To be fair, I assume his comments are scripted, but the persona they give him is totally overboard.

Road and Race REAL people just truly don't get how difficult that is to do... IMHO... The new Stig is even better and had mentioned to Jeremy that a Ferrari F12 was the ONLY car in the entire world that "Could hold a candle to a a Lexus LFA" and "Was the first Ferrari he would ever buy" truly speaks volumes about a man... As Jeremy noted IF he had ANY concept of money... Which he doesn't... I've heard almost all the stories through over four decades of professional race car drivers and I have NO DOUBT the new Stig is a collaboration of ALL the great drivers stories everytime they hear an off the wall story about a great driver ...
