Funny watching the part showing the old Forbes Field walls. I am 65 years old and my father took me there as a child , all I remembered was walking along a brick wall covered with ivy. Happy to see they saved it.

That’s a great memory, thanks for sharing it. And I agree, I think its great how they kept the parts of it like they did.

Another fun note, the land where the old Civic arena was, before it was called Mellon Center, used to be a stone quarry that was used to build many of the big historic buildings around Pittsburgh. I saw so many bands perform there over the years and had many many memorable dates. The Van Damme movie Sudden Death was filmed here. I play the goalie for the Blackhawks as well as a SWAT officer AND a random crowd person during the panic rush sequence. You can see big stones from the old quarry that are still used in the huge retaining wall along that long stretch of Baum Bvld that's all black stone on one side. My family owned that quarry.

That area was also known as the lower Hill with a large number of Jazz clubs.

I just visited the Forbes Field wall a couple of weeks ago. So very cool. Touching the wall was like touching history. I was born three days after Maz’s World Series home run. I am commenting here the day after Willie Mays passed away….I am sure he knew the Forbes outfield very well.

The Steel City means nearly everything to me. My favorite teams are the Steelers, the Pirates, Pitt's '77 football team, etc. Pittsburgh means so much to me for many reasons. My mother, father, their parents, brothers, sisters, etc. are from Pittsburgh. Back in 1999 I, myself, Mr. Scott Prosser, graduated from the PTI with a degree in Computer Aided Drafting. I have always adored attending Pirate games, Steelers games, spending time at The Point, The Gateway Clipper, riding Pittsburgh busses, Pittsburgh inclines, The Three River's Regatta, etc. I think the City is still one of the most beautiful places I have been. I watch the KDKA news daily. I love Pittsburgh.

I am a life long Steelers fan, age 52 now, and this was fun to watch. I love stuff like this anyway. Thank you!

I love this video, I have been to all of the place that were mentioned. When I was very young my grandfather took me to a game at Forbes Field, and when I was in high school I spent time in the Posner Bldg (it was The Forbes Quadrangle in 1979). I have fond memories of 3 Rivers Stadium watching the Steelers play from the sidelines as a young paramedic. I've gone to Pitt games in Pitt Stadium and so many concerts at Mellon Arena (formerly known as Civic Arena). I was there the last time Bob Marley played in Pittsburgh; they opened the dome when the Commadores sang "Zoom". I saw the mother ship land (Parliment/ Funkadelic) and the Jackson 5. I can't recall how many times I saw Prince perform...we had so many good times. The Mellon Arena site won't be a parking lot for long, there are plans to make it into a shopping/ living/ and business complex and I'm sure when it's built they will honor the building that stood there.

I remember stepping on the home plate at Forbes field & watching them build three3 rivers stadium & went to my first rock concert at 3 rivers Pink Floyd dark side of the moon tour & one of many at all venues in the burgh civic arena & the Stanley theatre

Before you crossed the steet and showed us the still standing Forbes Field wall, you spent a millisecond looking at a very important plaque...the plaque marking the spot Bill Mazeroski's World Series winning home run cleared the fence. This is very important history that I hope you went back to later in the video (I haven't finished it yet)! If not, I hope you edit this video to include it. Mazeroski's home run is still the only World Game 7 walk off home run ever, and one of only two walk off home runs ever in a seven game playoff series (the other is Aaron Boone's 2003 walk off home run against the Red Sox- with a Pirates' connection as it came off former Pirate Tim Wakefield). This deserves more than a millisecond look in an otherwise great video.

I was stunned how he just blew by that.

Also important to note, the University of Pittsburgh has swallowed up a LOT of old historic places as it expands. You will note for example that they also swallowed up the excellent old Syria Mosque which was an awesome venue for many rock bands too numerous to list and several major bands of the 80s such as Kip Winger held and filmed album release parties. One academy award nominated film I was in was filmed in the little known second floor stage/concert hall space. That film is Lorenzo's Oil.

Thank you for this video! I was at Forbes Field to watch baseball in the 1950's-60's (as a youngster), and watched them build some of the Civic Arena, and attended shows. I attended concerts at Three-Rivers, but never saw a ball game there. I moved south in 1972 and never knew the Civic Arena as Mellon Arena.... A lot of what you showed in this video is wonderful stuff that I had not seen nor heard of before.... Thank you once again!

I never saw a ball game at Three Rivers Stadium but I did see Pink Floyd there in 1975, the "Wish You Were Here" tour. I was 20 feet from the stage. To this day I can remember hearing "Sit Down!" so many times. I had already taken my place on the field but people around me got rude when other people yelled at then to "sit down".

@@highlife0586 I don't remember the year, but I attended a concert at Three Rivers. The 'lead' act was Three Dog Night. The other two acts in that same concert were Buddy Miles, and Lobo. Lobo was the first act to go on stage, and the PA/sound system was not working properly. No one could hear them. Many people (not me) started BOOING! In anger, the lead Lobo singer/guitar broke his guitar over an amplifier and stormed off stage. The next day in a live radio broadcast (I believe KQV) the Lobo members were irate and swore they would never come back to Pittsburgh... they never did as far as I know.

@@andrewfyakim525 Oh OK, The only concert I ever attended at Three Rivers Stadium was Pink Floyd's 1975 "Wish You Were Here" tour. I never saw a ball game in there.

I worked 6 years at Wendell August Forge in Grove City, Pa & I was a hand craftsman who has built many souvenirs that were sold from us making them out of the stainless steel roof of Mellon arena using hammers & dies.

I have an ornament. I stare at it sometimes in disbelief that it was once on the roof of that amazing arena. I know they need parking, but it would have been epic of they made it into an indoor parking garage and left the Outer Structure.

Pitt stadium really hurts. Every time I’m in the area I grieve its loss.😢

As a child my Great Uncle took me to one of the final games in Forbes Field, and later had classes in the Quad (now Posvar). Went to and performed in Three Rivers and many, many times, Pitt stadium. Civic Arena saw many concerts there.

This is very cool to see. My grandparents are from Pittsburgh & had an old pic showing horse & buggies going to Forbes field in background. I have been to all except Forbes & Mellon while standing.

I’m only 18 but one of my earliest memories is seeing a circus at the Melon Arena. I’ll never forget it

Years ago, I had a roommate who grew up a big Pirates fan. When he went to college at Georgetown, his closest friend was a Yankee fan. So naturally, when they took a trip back to Pittsburgh, my friend tok his friend to see the LF wall which couldn't hold Bill Mazeroski's Series wnning homer from the 1960 Pirates-Yankees World Series. Naturally, his friend couldn't resist and pissed on the wall. Go, Bucs!

Ahhh, the memories. Lower deck (the movable metal floored section along the first base line) seats that Dad was able get for the last game of the 1979 NLCS (Bucs vs Reds) along with other Pirate games at Three Rivers too numerous to count. Going to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus at the Civic Arena. Marching out onto the Pitt Stadium turf for the pregame performance when the Ringgold Rams played New Castle for the 1982 WPIAL AAAA Division 2 Championship Game (we won 6-3!). Thank you for going back to those sites and showing the monuments that remain.

Good video although you really skipped over the plague where Maz it his famous game seven ninth inning Homer to win the '60 World Series. Also when you were showing the flag pole being in play, next to the 457 mark you should have also mentioned that the batting cage was also stored just to the left of the flag pole, also in play !!

Heading to Pittsburgh tomorrow afternoon from Philly for the Pirates/Phillies series. We are hitting the Forbes Feild site before the game on Saturday and having a catch at the outfield walls. Can't wait! Go Phils!

I love the Forbes Field Wall…I am reminded of that video of Yogi Berra looking up as Bill Mazeroski’s game winning home run flies over the wall to end the World Series in 1960…I just watched the video….

I love how they incorporated portions of the ballpark into a little park there. What a great way to preserve a part of sports history.

I lived in the fraternity houses behind Pitt Stadium for its final years and we’d have ESPN show up and take video B roll of the stadium from there…. Also, I believe that home plate in Forbes Quad was where Babe Ruth hit his final home run.

Was in the civic arena I think the one and only time the roof was opened. . Every year people on October 13 gather at the Mazeroski plaque and party.Great video, thanks for the memories.

@@ddvette You're welcome. I remember James Taylor was quite impressed when it was opened during his concert (with America and Linda Ronstadt). He told us, "Nice place you got here."

As a Pittsburgh Pirates fan back in the day (although I don't follow baseball too much anymore), this was very enjoyable to watch. Ed Ott...goodness...those were the days. My first Pirates game was in Candlestick Park, before it was enclosed, with the old cyclone fence in the outfield. Pitt Stadium brings back memories of the great ND/Pitt rivalry. Thanks for showing this.

I’m not much of a baseball fan myself anymore. I’m much more of a football and basketball fan these days. But back then as a kid, I loved baseball and it was a thrill to go here for the first time.

I worked for Pitt in Facilities Management. The story is that the Forbes Field home plate is not exactly in its original spot. It ended up being in one of the restrooms so it was moved out into the corridor. You can see the restroom in this video on the right side as the camera is moving towards home plate

If you pause at 2:38: I think you can see the still existing Forbes Field flag pole in the black and white photo (above the 'LD' letters of Forbes Field).

Thanks for this video, BGSU33! I have attended games in all four of these venues that now exist only in images and memories. It's great to see that they haven't been forgotten.

That’s cool you’ve been to all of them. Pittsburgh has done a very nice job with memorials for most of those venues, especially compared to a lot of other cities where there is hardly anything or nothing at all.

@@ComeSeeWithMe I was lucky to have have seen a game at Forbes! I went to a game against the Cubs with my Little League team on June 27, 1970. The Bucs won 2-1. Dock Ellis and Fergie Jenkins both pitched complete games. The next day was the final two games at Forbes Field...a DH against the Cubs. I saw a lot of games at the other three venues . It is cool that three of the four have done a nice job of memorializing the razed venues. I wish the Civic (Mellon) Arena would've done more. That building saw a lot of sports and entertainment history! I'm glad to hear that the 'Burgh has done a better job than most, in leaving something of the bygone buildings behind!

I've been to all of those venues as well.

Growing up in Pittsburgh in the 80’s, my Dad used to teach part-time evening classes at Pitt (he taught full time at Point Park College). Back then kids could run around unsupervised 😅. I used to go and wander around the campus, including Forbes Quad, and I remember seeing the old Forbes Field home plate under glass even then. I probably spent more time at the Student Union, and running across the overhead walkway from David Lawrence. And obviously The Cathedral. Somehow it wasn’t until years later, well after I’d graduated from Pitt myself, that I saw the outfield wall. (Most of my classes were at Benedum which is a ways away from Forbes Quad so I rarely went there when I was there.)

Wish they would’ve kept something around for Mellon arena. Maybe the sign that looks like a miniature model of the stadium out front. I think they could’ve easily kept that as a little bit of a memorial. Oh well, the new arena is really nice though and has already a bit of history of its own so.

I agree. I always hate seeing the old places go, but I like when they at least do something along these lines to remember them.

When I was a kid growing up in Jeannette Pa, my second grade class took a field trip to the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh in 1962 to see the circus.Now it was called Mellon Arena. Back in 1962 it was the first arena with an opening roof.

I wish I could have visited that arena before it was gone. I was never into hockey so it wasn’t ever on my radar. But in hindsight, I wish I would have gone to a game or an event in it simply just to see the venue before it was gone.

My dad and i worked at the CIVIC Arena. We were both there for the filming of "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh", (very interesting how they bring people in for the stands...raffles happening continuously, just to keep them interested). Dad was there for the filming of "Sudden Death", too. Sad what happened to the Arena and no markers or anything. Home plate, the Forbes Field wall are great stuff. Many thanks!

Thanks for sharing that info. And I agree, it would have been nice to have something remaining from Civic Arena. But they did a really good job with other places around the city. Pittsburgh has done an outstanding job compared to a number of other cities I have been to.

I was lucky enough to go to all of those stadiums including Forbes Field. I was really upset when they tore down Forbes Field. They never asked anyone about it, they just did it. When I walked into a brand new Three Rivers Stadium all I saw was cold cement.

They did the same thing in Philadelphia and tore down Connie Mack Stadium where the Athletics and Phillies played for another cookie cutter stadium. They didn't have to. Eagles already had a home at Franklin Field which still stands. So much wasted money and history 🤬

I remember I was 8 when my aunt took me and my sisters to see Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour at Heinz Field in June 2015 and I loved it and it was my first concert ever and it was also my first time going to Heinz Field and I remember the crowd looking like a sea of LED BRACELETS and I also remember leaving the stadium after Shake It Off and thinking Man that concert was awesome 😎

The Steelers played at Pitt Stadium before Three Rivers. Pitt played once at Three Rivers, a night game on ABC against Penn State since Pitt Stadium didn't have lights at the time.

I remember going to that last game at Forbes Field! Double header Pirates s.Chicago Cubs! I think the Pirates won both games! At the end of the games fans started to take the seats apart to remember that day! Amazing day! ⚾⚾⚾🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🦜🦜🦜👍👍👍

Yeah, Pitt went from having an on-campus stadium (Pitt Stadium) to now being one of only a handful of FBS schools without an on-campus stadium.

I worked for the company that replaced all the doors and entrances in the Civic Arena in the 80s. We spent days removing all the steel and glass from them to get the best price at the recycler.

the basketball team used to play in a area in the basement of pitt stadium from1925 to 1951 in an area called the pitt pavilion it held 4000 spectators it was in place until 1994 when the stadiums athletic complex was built thought that was a pretty cool fact

That picture of Forbes Field. Those people looking down. That exact framed picture was hanging in my principals office. Also, the third base coach behind Maz was his uncle. Me being a curious baseball fan, I asked him to prove it and he never could, so I guess it's one of those stories that you'll just have to take with the grain of salt.

In the Hill District on Bedford Avenue stood Greenlee field which house the Pittsburgh Crawfords. The Crawfords were a great Negro League baseball team.

I just answered my own question. I looked it up online and found the historical marker that is there now and it looks like there is housing units on the former location now as well. Thanks again for the info.

Some things you may find interesting. The old Forbes field is featured in several films, in particular the old film Angels in the Outfield. If you go out the east side from the home plate you can see the old historic Hammerschlag Hall at Carnegie-Mellon which also appears in the movie. Its also where my lab used to be when I was with CMU. :-)

@@ComeSeeWithMe My pleasure. There is so much back story and related info to that part of the city. If you pan left from my labs you hit Carnegie Art Center, the Art Institute., the Mine Safety Research Center, Central Catholic, Channels 13/16, Heinz Hall, Heinz Chapel, Main Old Branch of Carnegie Library, the Mellon Institute of specialty research, another lab I worked with, and of course more and more university of Pittsburgh buildings as you pan the imaginary camera perspective counter clockwise. Just about every major name family in the regions history has had major involvement in that area and it should be no surprise when you realize that the next couple of miles of Forbes avenue were once completely lined with Robber Baron Mansions from the industrial boom years. Many are still there, some have been repurposed as condos, and a cluster of them became Chatham College which still has pictures of my family members and names on some buildings. :-)

You should have stopped at the Bill Mazeroski plaque marking the spot where his home run cleared the fence to win the 1960 World Series. This was arguably the most famous event in Pirate history.

I was lucky enough to have gone to the last game at every stadium that closed in my lifetime

The home run markings are insane !all well over 400 ft

I was borned and raised in Pittsburgh! Well done covering these past facilities! Spent many of days at the Civic (Melon) Arena and 3 Rivers Stadium! Someone pointed out the Flagpole along the right field line at Forbes Stadium at the 2:38 mark. I would like to point out the cars parked at the bottom of the picture. Is this how they parked back then? Or Is this junkyard?....lol! Seems liek the parking lot. 5 cars deep! Imagine getting out of that mess today????? lol!!

Could also have done Exposition Park, adjacent to the site of Three Rivers Stadium. I think they marked home plate. Union Park was a few blocks further north, nothing left of it that I know of.

@@andythompson7725 A few blocks north of the present stadiums, bounded by Allegheny, Behan, and Galveston. There were sunken train tracks outside of center field, making it easy for circuses to load and unload. Also called Recreation Park.

@@andythompson7725 I think that the area of Heinz Field and PNC has been elevated quite a bit. There are stories of games played at Exposition Park with water in the outfield. Before the area was filled in, Union/Recreation Park had the advantage of being on higher ground. Smoke Island was also in the vicinity, and had a very colorful history.

Art Ditmar (Ralph Terry) throws here's a swing and a high fly ball going deep to left this may do it! Back to the wall goes Berra, it is... over the fence, home run, the Pirates win!

Ah yes...Forbes Field. Was there in 1964 to see the Pirates vs. the Dodgers. The Civic Arena (before it was renamed Mellon Arena): It was 50 years ago this coming June...Pink Floyd in concert The Dark Side Of The Moon tour.

That’s outstanding that you got to see events in both of those venues!

Too bad they can’t preserve stadiums like Los Angeles does, would have been dope to see some of the stadiums still standing.

The Pirates used to stow away the practice batting cage in that corner behind the flag pole during the games.

yes it is .......so very cool .........center field ........... actually , left center to rt. center at forbes was a titanic blast ..........

The road through the outfield is Roberto Clemente Drive.

I went to a lot of concerts and Pens Games at the Civic Arena as a kid and teen in the 80's & 90's but I think there's no markers for the Arena due to its mixed history with it's origin. The Arena was built during Pittsburgh's era of Urban Renewal during the 50's and 60's but African Americans at the time had another name for it "Negro Removal". The Arena was a particularly hard pill to swallow because the city tore down the heart of the business area of the Hill District which at the time was the number 2 influential African-American community in America next to Harlem. When the city decided to tear down the Arena they did it with promises to bring needed businesses to the Hill District.

Attended the final games against the Cubs in 1970. Doubleheader. Bucs won both. Home plates actual location would place it inside a woman’s restroom so the spot you see is off a bit.

I had no idea about the remnants of Forbes Field and Three Rivers wow... This is incredible! I now remember I went to watch this a while back and got sidetracked then forgot about it. Lol... Thanks for the reminder. Is home plate in its exact spot? That outfield wall is awesome.. love it.. The first World Series was played there w Boston, I think. I’ve been reading up on the formation of The National League and the amateur ranks that preceded it. William Hulbert was a big figure of the time. Honestly, NY would never do anything this cool.

Yes, they said that is where home plate stood in Forbes Field. And the outfield wall is awesome! IMO, the Forbes Field spot was the coolest of all the Pittsburgh places I found.

No: Forbes field wasn’t built until 1909. The first World Series, which was between Pittsburgh and Boston in 1903, was played at exposition park.

Forbes Field home plate is about 15 feet from original location. It's real location would be in the women's washroom. All the rest is accurate.

The red brick church would not sell when the new arena was being built so the city just built around it.

You are also standing near where Exposition Park was. Right between Hienz Field and PNC Park

I remember the Pirates shortening left field to accommodate an aging Hank Greenberg.

Forbes Field - Great coverage. Three Rivers - Was there no marker of where home plate was? Also, great picture of you and your grandmother. Pitt Stadium - A very impressive exterior. There wasn’t a marker for home plate at Three Rivers Stadium, but there was for Forbes Field (as I’m guessing you saw in this video). The writing on Pitt Stadium that was engraved in the stadium wall that I think you are asking about said, “Pitt Stadium South Entrance.”

Rumor has it.. Home plate from Forbes field was actually moved. When the building was designed home plate was in the women’s bathroom..

That rumor has actually been debunked. The original home plate would've actually been in the GSPIA/Economics Library.

Look up the old Yankee Stadium the flag pole was in fair territory known as death valley

Nobody in Pittsburgh ever called it Mellon Arena. The Beatles played there in 1964.

Did you find anything from Exposition Field where the Pirates played prior to Forbes Field?....late 1800s and very early 1900s...on the Northside.

We need to petition to change the name back to heinz field. Heinz may not be part of our city anymore but it always will be

There is a penguin in the lot where the logo was painted I believe

Thanks for the info. I didn’t notice one when I was there but next time I’m back I’ll have to look for it.

When I went to Pitt, I always heard that the home plate actually isn't in it's exact original location. It had to be relocated several feet or it would have been inside one of the bathrooms that are nearby. Not sure if that is correct or not, but is what I was told.

I have heard something similar as well, although the version I heard was it would have been in a closet or something like that. Be that as it may, it was very close to where it currently sits now and it’s very cool how they placed it there and display it like that.

The university of Pittsburgh made a huge mistake in tearing down their football stadium. I can see why I see a sea of yellow seats every time the game is on at Heinz field Students just don’t want to go there. Perhaps if they had made renovations back then, maybe the team would be more successful.

As a teen I remember the cars parked along Centre Avenue on Game Days at Pitt stadium.

No easy home runs in Forbes field and to think Stargell hit one OVER the right field roof (i believe it was right field) him and only one other player..that's impressive.

Bob Skinner ,Eddie Mathews and Babe Ruth also cleared the right field roof. In the Babe's case it was his final homerun.

Another note: I used to yell at Danny Marino in the old Pitt Stadium and even had his sister give me hell a few times! :-) We went to Central Catholic together and my uncle Danny Pacella was his football coach that taught him much of what he knows. That same uncle went on to be the famous coach that took other high school teams to the state championships.
