To be fair, it was completely sanctioned (meaning allowed) by the late King Abdullah. We don`t know whether he did something, and even if he did, it was legal then, but it is true that many royals are very generous to their ministers and underlings. Saudi Ministers earn millions, as their standard salary. So it isn't surprising that someone who worked closely with the royal family for 20 years, and being one of the closest advisers of the late crown prince Nayef, to be very wealthy.

I'm under the impression that it was more a matter of the royals he worked for letting him put his hand in the cookie jar as often as he liked so long as he not only turned a blind eye to their own corruption but helped cover their shady dealings. You have to realize that those people are obscenely wealthy as a whole, possibly even more than someone like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. They aren't going to allow anyone to get a true measurement of their wealth because the means of securing it have who knows how many murders and other horror stories behind it. MBS is in the position of power because his father had files on every member of the family dating back fifty years and they both know where all the bodies are buried (so to speak).

I read this interview of a female activist where she fled to save her life and her children's . But unfortunately her other friends who were activists got arrested . They campaigned for a long time for female equality especially the driving of vehicles. Now MBS has announced the same , but after announcing that was when these officials got these women arrested . She told that was highly because these men didn't want to credit the females for protest or development . Their goal was the government and MBS is changing and becoming modern . So yeah these women are still in jail . Mind you that saudi jail are notorious for women ! There's no such thing as a sentence ,it all depends on the male guardian when they want to take these female out . Well and if the government arrested you , best of luck! A horrible country in just like North Korea but mostly for the females.

Also, apartments are not necessarily expensive because they are merely in Makkah. There are some areas that are very expensive and others that are not. Long story short, no matter how much money you take as gifts from the royal family, you will be very lucky if you made a billion dollar. That's a huge amount of money. Being a 'Spy Chief' has never been a saint's job! Undoubtedly some or many nasty things have happened during his watch while he was in favor with the Saudi monarchy and he even generated considerable wealth from it while such things where happening! In such a case and considering what position he held, he is to be believed for some things and not believed perhaps for most other things. Now that he is on the other side of the fence of the current Crown Prince he's looking for friends, protectors, empathy and sympathy. Little of which he cared about or offered when he was in office. If he was on MBS (the crown prince) team we wouldn't be looking at this and it would be the same old sh*t as usual for him which would be caring about himself and those who keep him in power and NOBODY else!
