First of all, the truly brave ones are the UKRAINIANS. It is estimated that 70-75%% of Russians support Putin and the atrocities/war crimes of his barbaric and kleptocratic regime. Of the 20-25% remaining (comprising millions of people) just a few THOUSAND protesters came out (not hundreds of thousands, not millions .... just a few thousand) ..... so what, maybe less than 1% of Russians? The remaining 24% of the "silent opposition" are doing what they do best and have been doing for decades, staying silent, too afraid to fight for their rights (unlike the Ukrainians)...... and most don't care about rights unless it affects them directly. So now that it directly affects the “silent opposition” what do they do??? …… what they have done best so far ….. flee instead of fight for their rights ….. cowards. The majority of Russians running scared didn't give a crap about the atrocities in Ukraine .... until now .... they should NOT be allowed in to Europe .... stay in your Russia and learn to fight for your rights you cowards! The Ukrainians did it and are doing it, what is your excuse??? Full respect to those about 1% of Russians who actually have courage and stay and protest. If all the hundreds of thousands of Russian cowards running for the borders had instead gone to protest in Moscow they might have already been well on their way to toppling the Putin regime.

More than slightly irked by this interviewer's need to get her questions in, over letting this man give complete responses. That said, I much appreciate him having the opportunity to offer some level-headed insight.

Alarming and depressing conversation here, but the sub-titles are a hoot! Who in the heck is doing them?

This bold man, I believe, represents the inner voice of a great many Russians. Just because you aren't courageous enough to speak out, doesn't instantly make you a coward. Many contemplate the risk to their families and find the stakes too high. And those of us who've never known the terror of living in tyranny, can hope to understand the fear of those who wake to it daily. If more like this honorable diplomat can find the courage to speak out, slowly that brave seed will multiply. But all of us must remember, when this is over... it was Putin who was the enemy . Not the people of Russia.

I am 71 . My dad was a ww2 vet. I am so very tired of wars . The money they cost could solve so many problems in the world . And wealthy people would still be wealthy . And most people could have the opportunity to do more than just survive . They could enjoy life . And young men and women could live to build lives of their own .

Loved to listen to him. His answers strike me as nuanced, well thought through. I had to smile in sympathy when his answer to "was the attack telegraphed?" was the eqivalent of a mild eye role. While this is mostly speculation on my part (too little to go on here), he strikes me as someone who stays well away from portraying himself as some kind of martyr of super brave guy (I'd guess he is aware that having worked for this government for any time is always going to be a little compromising), and also stays away from betraying his people.
