Former RAF Jaguar GR1 Aircraft XX747 restoration in the Paint Shop

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Over the last 12 months we have been restoring Jaguar GR1 XX747.
The final part of the restoration process was a trip away to the paint shop.
A huge amount of effort went into this transformation. We hope you enjoy this short film to walk you through the process.
Special thanks to the Serco painters and Finishers who went above and beyond on this project.
History and Background:
XX747 holds the FAI ratified flight speed record between the capital of Scotland and England.
On 9th September 1977, Flt Lt Russ Peart of 226 OCU took off from Leuchars and headed south. A few minutes later he flew past the tower at RAF Turnhouse (now Edinburgh Airport) and accelerated as hard as XX747 would allow. Going Supersonic over Northern England, 26 min 25 seconds later the time trial was completed as the Jag flew past the tower at RAF Benson.
One sonic boom later and assisted by a hefty tail wind the 330.6 mile flight was completed at an average speed of 750.89 mph. It is believed that the record still stands today.
The Fédération aéronautique internationale who are responsible for verifying record-breaking flights supervised and ratified the flight.
The brief for this restoration was to restore XX747 back to her 1977 Record Breaking Spec and finish so it can go on display as a high end Museum / Display piece. Its also worth noting the Desert paint scheme on the aircraft at the start of the video was spurious / fake paint scheme to XX747 in the early 90’s when the aircraft was retired from service and then used to train Ground Crew. If this had been genuine Gulf War paint / patina we would have 100% kept it 👍🏻

Great work you have done.👍 I personally would have left it the way it used to be on the Desert Storm campaign i mean restoration yes but in the Desert Storm camouflage and the nose art of Sandman. 😉

The only 1 time I saw this Jaguar GR.1 was in 2007 when I had a visit to actual see it, It was with the DCAE inside a Class Room in RAF Cranwell, it was in the fake sand camo then but looks a bit more weather beaten now prior to the repaint, I was wondering where it actually went to, Nice to see it being restored & back into its Original RAF, 226 OCU markings.

226 OCU originally at RAF Lossiemouth, Split between 1 and 2 line, each had equal numbers of single seat and two seat T-bird RAF Jaguars. All the single seat aircraft had a number i.e. 17 all the T-Birds had a letter i.e. G. unlike the Jaguar squadrons that only had two T-birds, on the squadron's all the aircraft had a squadron letter, and an individual letter. Single seat aircraft started at A T-birds started at Z so on 31 squadron in Germany the squadron letter was D, the first single seat aircraft was DA the second T-bird was DZ, the XX or XZ number only being used on official paperwork. so if an aircraft returned for a major servicing, its replacement would take its departing aircraft squadron letters. so on 31 squadron the first DG was XX973, later replaced by XX 744. either way it would be called Delta-Golf. the aircraft letter was carried on the tail and nose undercarriage door. Aircraft did not alway return to the same squadron after major servicing.

The nose art of sadman insane looked original to me... and I should know.... as I was one of those who painted it... Chris Froome.. and also painted by Paul Robins.........(2 am in the morning, by torchlight and heavy 'dew' running down over the surface....caused some problems.) where are the main planes .. are they being done separately? the desert pink was a water-based paint.. designed as temp finish that could be 'soaped' and washed off... The problem was during the war (ha ha ...).. a lack of water to mix with the paint..the water at Bharain was dirty and for some 'strange 'reason would not mix correctly with the paint to thin down... So we used 'brushwash'. or thinners... and the paint had to be rolled on with a 'house painting roller." so it was a bit thicker than spraying..

Miss the Jag at airshows and seeing them fly over Malham Cove as a youngster. Hopefully it won't be long before we hear those mighty engines in anger.

One of the few things prettier than a BAC Jaguar GR1 is the two seat trainer variant with the long canopy and needle nose...
