JAGS in GRANBY | The role of the RAF Jaguar GR.1 in the 1990-1991 Gulf War
This video shall outline the role of the Jaguar, as well as going into what lessons the RAF learned from Operation Granby, chief of which was that low level attacks were very risky and posed many problems, and the release of guided ordinance from medium to high altitudes was much more effective.

You know you're getting old when all the aircraft in this video were in service when you joined the RAF and are now all museum pieces.

F-14A and B Mechanic here. I worked on both the Pratt & Whitney TF-P4141A and the F110-GE-400.
Always Loved the look of the jaggers when coming in to land, always reminded be of a bird of prey swooping down with its wings and talons pulled back getting ready to strike, with that tall landing gear and the way of the mechanical set up....
My friend was an Armourer on Jags in the Gulf. Love ya Mick if you see this!
Interesting series of videos you’ve made about RAF aircraft in the first Gulf War. You seem to summarise that: 1) Tornado F3’s were held back from the front line because of a lack of capability 2) Tornado GR1’s couldn’t target their designated targets so had to be accompanied by old Buccaneers. 3) Jaguars didn’t have the modern avionics to be able to be front line strike aircraft, or fly at night. Maybe the RAF was more suited to the north Europe theatre of operations but the aircraft they had on the front line seemed to be utterly inadequate for a relatively straightforward war.
Really enjoyed this . Always liked the jaguar.
Love Jaguars, such a cool, looking aircraft.
I worked at Warton at that time, helped get a chaff/flare system onto Tornado F3. We did it in 10 days. Great times.

Was at college with people from British Aerospace in 1982 in the Falklands and they said that things that would have taken years happened in weeks if not days. It's good to keep your capabilities at home.
As a Yank who loves British aviation history and aircraft I’d like to see more of this. There’s a few channels but I like your presentation and the footage is extra crispy. Building a 2 Squadron T.2/4 soon in 1/48
Loved the Jaguarscn Tornadoes
Well done for acknowledging the groundcrew, it’s a rarity. Former groundcrew here 😊
Great coverage of a sometimes forgotten aircraft ! Thank you to the RAF pilots and ground crews for service.
Chuffin decent video mate. Very well done, clear and steady narration and interesting and related background videos. Solid one.

IMO the Jaguars and Buccaneers in sand pink of the Gulf war were the last old school aircraft which looked the part.
Fantastic bit of kit.
John Prescott had two of these!
Bonito y versátil avión, y encima cumplió con su cometido.
Friendly FYI. 226 OCU Sqn was based at RAF Lossiemouth and converted to 16 (R) Sqn in 1991. 16 Sqn moved to RAF Coltishall in the late 90s. The Jaguars took over the RAF commitment to Northern Iraq watch as they were equipped better for recon roles. The aircraft serviceability was one of the best in the RAF, that is why they rarely missed sorties. People thought the aircrew flew low out of RAF Coltishall on purpose, but it was because of the low efficiency of the wings and engines combined.
The Jaguar and the F14... formidable machines!

Both Kittycats, both the coolest planes of their respective nations
Nice summary. Low-level weapons delivery was and is still effective, assuming the advantage of being at low level, ie using terrain masking to minimise exposure time to threats, is applicable to the route and target. Of course a lot of this theatre was quite open and flat! But many SAMs have a minimum engagement height that can be exploited, and the RAFs principal anti-airfield weapon, JP233, could only be delivered at low-level. Although out of the gun envelope, aircraft are more vulnerable to SAMs at medium level. The change to medium level was made only when the SEAD campaign had progressed far enough to make it workable, but aircraft were still lost even at medium level. The Buccs did not deploy because the Tornado GR1s were hard to maintain. They were there specifically to use PAVE SPIKE.

Thanks very much, I totally agree. A Tornado was hit by a SAM in medium level attacks in a strike package with Buccaneers, however SEAD made it a lot easier for the coalition to use guided munition stores safely.

The Jaguar & Mirage F-1 entered service in the French air force in the same year & from the get-go the Mirage was the better aircraft of the 2, which is why I believe the French did not care about upgrading the Jaguar as they would rather spend the time & money expanding the capabilities for the Mirage F-1, which is a pure French design which they could market to the world.
Those over-wing mounted sidewinders vibrated terribly at certain speeds

Certainly looks like a sidewinder on that kill list... However, no Jaguars scored any air-to-air kills in the Gulf War, it's a mystery to me as to why there is a sidewinder kill marking...

617 combat sortie out of 12 aircraft, 1 of them on it's own dropping more than 100 x 1000lbs bomb (or equivalent). Only 1 tasked sortie lost due to technical issues unserviceable IFF and who would want to fly around trigger happy yanks with a broken IFF.

Why did Brits procire jaguar? Becouse F-16 was too good and too American.
painting the Sepecat JAGUAR GR.2 multi role ground attack fighter & Lockheed L-1101 Tristar mid air refueling tanker aircraft in desert beige tan color wasn't very advantageous due to the poor improvised makeshift paint job on the jets!!!
I've always wondered how the RAF would have done 1 vs 1 in 1991 against Iraq
