Former Pres.Thabo Mbeki speaks on Harvard Report on South African economy

The African continent can still recover from the current challenges it's facing.
This is the view of two ANC veterans, former president Thabo Mbeki and anti-apartheid activist Sophia Williams-De Bruyn speaking during the Calabash Awards in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.
The University of South Africa held the Calabash Awards honouring men and women who have made a contribution to society.
The former South African president says the recently released Harvard report on the state of the economy in South Africa is troubling, however, the country has men and women who can turn the situation around. The former President shared the content of the Harvard Report on SA.

  • @kevinrtres

    @kevinrtres

    We already have a failed State - it's only the hard-working citizens that either cannot or will not leave that is holding things together. Notice how efficient SARS is at extracting taxes from the slaves so that the grand masters can slurp it up at the trough? A State has failed when citizens pay tax and then pay private security companies to guard them. The State has failed when the only proper schooling is at private schools or at home whilst you're still paying higher taxes. A state has failed when the citizens start a collective to fix potholes - which the State is not, while paying even higher taxes. A state has failed when citizens have to provide their own water and electricity whilst paying an up-front set fee for non-delivery of those vital commodities. A state has failed when the citizens have to go to private hospitals and pay for private health care ( no I'm totally against the NHI rubbish ) whilst the government elites will not under any circumstances go to or send any of their relatives to any government hospital to save their own lives. Those are the signs - and they are right here with us in SA.

But with the right government, leaders and morals, we can reverse this death-spiral of decay and decline under the ANC. It also starts with the small things that all of us need to do; like stopping at red traffic lights (in other words respecting the laws), not littering, not stealing from employers, not cheating with exams (in other words integrity). If we can't even do those basic things, we have no chance of even getting back to number 100 in the world.

    If the "population" dislikes the direction the country is heading, perhaps the "population" should vote for a party that has repeatedly demonstrated that it is capable of managing its jurisdictions properly with balance sheets in the black, not red. There's only one party doing that at the moment. The "population" however, prefers to fear a return of apartheid and prefers to dislike those whom they assume are associated with that former era - so they will NOT vote for that party - preferring instead to rather see a scorched earth rather than a reasoned return to sanity.

    Take a step back ... 🤔 think about this ... South Africans took to the streets ... to fight for their freedom from the apartheid government ... It begs the question ... Are they now free ... and free from what or who? ... take Durban Central for instance ... my observation ... who are the people that live, run businesses and control the city ... it is foreigners and not South Africans and this is evident in all the big metros and towns ... while South Africans still live in the townships and in shacks ... SO, in other words ... South Africans fought for freedom for foreigners to have a better life in South Africa 😢

They don't know how a country works so they vote based on mass movement like a flock of sheep. They are mostly incapable of reasoning and making their own decisions.

    One cannot fail to see the disappointment and sadness in former President Mbeki's face and voice. He is disappointed by the direction the country seems to have taken since he was kicked out of power those many years ago, by a coterie of thieves who felt side-lined by his strict, no-nonsense rules of keeping the keys to the vaults away from the would be plunderers and looters. Truth be said, the economy was doing great during the presidency of Thabo Mbeki. It was when he started spending more time away from the country that the crooks found the time and influence to plan against him. It was also the time he started advocating for the African Renaissance that the Borders started opening and for him to start losing the plot. I suppose his confidence in his policies and that South Africans were more or less happy with the state of the economy, made him to think of himself as untouchable. He himself created his own downfall by taking his eyes away from the Brutuses within his own corrupt party, leading us to where we find ourselves as a country today. Yes, he never ever thought the country he fought for, for so many, many years could end up like this. I can surely understand the disappointment and sadness on his face.

    Well, quite frankly, we deserve the country we've got - too many opportunists and double-agents in our midst. Let it complete its growing pains on life support, so that those who think they are more capable can jump ship, and leave the true patriots behind - those that have nowhere else to go. Those patriots will rebuild from the ashes a future that will serve the remnant citizenry honestly and compassionately. Never be afraid to let things crash, so that the fickle may give way to the resilient that shall fix our land.

    Centre for Development and Harvard university nah. Why would they write about South African economy not the US economy? This is where the African problem lies, you let other people write everything for you, what is the purpose of your own universities? Why can't your own universities do the research and then write a report on the economy of their own countries. If we continue to have these foreign universities write our own history, economic and social reports, then we have failed and a people and our governments and universities are as just useless as our leaders.

    SA in an alternate timeline: Mandela (Late 90s): Oversees the transition of the country from apartheid to democracy, & lays the groundwork for reducing inequality. Mbeki (2000s): Maintains the policies of reducing inequality, & lays the groundwork for 90's kids to eventually spearhead economic growth. Pres. 3 (2010s): Continues his predecessors' legacies, while implementing policies that would make it very easy for our golden generation to start the businesses that would drive the economy forward, as well as attracting tons of foreign investment. Pres. 4 (2020s): Oversees the beginning of this long awaited economic boom, & prepares for SA becoming an important player in global politics. Pres. 5 (2030s): SA is finally a prosperous nation. Inequality has significantly dropped. We are even expanding our prosperity & influence towards our northern neighbours. This is the path we were supposed to taking but unfortunately, due to the diseases that are; Corruption, The lack of a truly worthy opposition party, The complacent youth, The constant bickering amongst our social classes, etc, it seems like we're doomed to watch our beloved country fall into complete chaos with no way back.
