Former national security adviser weighs in on Ukraine aid and Russia

When President Biden signed a foreign aid bill Wednesday that includes tens of billions of dollars in assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, it was touted as money that would "strengthen our national security and send a message to the world about the power of American leadership." Retired Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, former national security adviser, joins CBS News with analysis.

Draft dodging has become an increasingly pressing problem for Kiev. Under martial law, men between 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave the country if they are eligible to be conscripted, with only a few exceptions. In late December, the border guard reported that nearly 11,000 men were caught trying to escape the country in 2023 alone. The BBC recently reported that from February 2022 to September 2023, nearly 20,000 men fled Ukraine to avoid being drafted. Another estimate made by Austrian news outlet Express with reference to Eurostat data suggested that the number could be as high as 650,000.

Oh sure. The mission of the US is a global crusade for "democracy". That is why the US supports theocratic Saudi Arabia. And supported Pinochet's military coup in Chile. And yes, Mr. HistoryMind, destroying the Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan was so vital for the safety of US soil.

As Russian Troops Broke Through Ukrainian Lines, Panicky Ukrainian Commanders Had No Choice But To Deploy One Of Their Least-Prepared Brigades This weekend, Russian drones and scouts surveilling the front line just west of the ruins of Avdiivka, in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast, observed something strange. Ukrainian trenches just east of the village of Ocheretyne, previously manned by soldiers from the Ukrainian army’s elite 47th Mechanized Brigade, were empty. The village was undefended.

  • @inzhener2007

The military aid in this package is less than $20B. In 2023, the USA did not allocated anything to help Ukraine. Out of what the US allocated in 2022, $80.8 billion in total. $46B was military aid out of which, the USA has so far delivered only for 20B. Russia spent on the war about $60-80B in 2022, and $110B in 2023. NOW: Over the past 26 months of Putin's war on Ukraine, the US DoD (Pentagon) has spent $1800 billion altogether. I.e., USA has helped Ukraine for 1.2 % of its military budget.

I am SO DAMNED GLAD that 'winning' is brought forward. I've harped on through since the start of this 2022 Ukrain/russia war (tho this started in 2014, and well before that anyway)... anyway... I've repeated ad naseum when this administration began to drag its feet on what weaponry could be supplied to Ukraine. ATACMS were off the table until now, for instance. Made me so angry the posture of supplying just enough to slow the russian incursion into Ukraine, but I would say "do you want to fight a war or do you want to WIN a war?' Of course H.R.'s articulating the culture of WINNING makes complete sense. USMA and all. My father was '50, USMA, and he spent a great deal of time facing USMA and AFA grads, and cadet. Many stories but one in particular but too long for here. Involved an AFA cadet. In serious trouble for, well.. let's just say in serious hot water. Should have been separated for his offense. Let's just say my dad took him for a walk around the block, lectured the hell out of this cadet, hammered him to toe the line, duty/honor/country, and on and on. But he ended with.... "did you win?" Knowing the entire story is why H.R. discusses winning. 10000% agree we spend far too much time quibbling about process. I and many others prefer to work the problem backwards. Starting with do you want to fight a war or do you want to win a war?

“A team of researchers at the University of Adelaide have found that as many as 80 percent of tweets about the 2022 Russia-Ukraine invasion in its early weeks were part of a covert propaganda campaign originating from automated fake ‘bot’ accounts. An anti-Russia propaganda campaign originating from a ‘bot army’ of fake automated Twitter accounts flooded the internet at the start of the war. The research shows of the more than 5-million tweets studied, 90.2 percent of all tweets (both bot and non-bot) came from accounts that were pro-Ukraine, with fewer than 7 percent of the accounts being classed as pro-Russian. The university researchers also found these automated tweets had been purposely used to drive up fear amongst people targeted by them, boosting a high level of statistically measurable ‘angst’ in the online discourse. The research team analysed a massively unprecedented 5,203,746 tweets, sent with key hashtags, in the first two weeks of the Russian invasion of Ukraine from 24 February this year. The researchers considered predominately English-language accounts, with a calculated 1.8-million unique Twitter accounts in the dataset posting at least one English-language tweet. The results were published in August in a research paper, titled “#IStandWithPutin versus #IStandWithUkraine: The interaction of bots and humans in discussion of the Russia/Ukraine war“, by the University of Adelaide’s School of Mathematical Science. The size of the sample under study, of over 5-million tweets, dwarfs other recent studies of covert propaganda in social media surrounding the Ukraine war. The little-reported Stanford University/Graphika research on Western disinformation, analysed by Declassified Australia in September, examined just under 300,000 tweets from 146 Twitter accounts. The Meta/Facebook research on Russian disinformation reported widely by mainstream media, including the ABC a fortnight later, looked at 1,600 Facebook accounts. Reports on the new research have appeared in a few independent media sites, and in Russia’s RT, but not much else, so revealing the burial of stories that don’t fit the desired pro-Western narrative. This ground-breaking study, exposing a massive anti-Russia social media disinformation campaign, has been effectively ignored by the mainstream Western establishment media. It’s become almost routine during the Russia-Ukraine war. The Adelaide University researchers unearthed a massive organised pro-Ukraine influence operation underway from the early stages of the conflict. Overall the study found automated ‘bot’ accounts to be the source of between 60 to 80 percent of all tweets in the dataset. The published data shows that in the first week of the Ukraine-Russia war there was a huge mass of pro-Ukrainian hashtag bot activity. Approximately 3.5 million tweets using the hashtag #IStandWithUkraine were sent by bots in that first week. In fact, it was like someone had flicked a switch, when at the start of the war on 24 February, pro-Ukraine bot activity suddenly burst into life. In that first day of the war the #IStandWithUkraine hashtag was used in as many as 38,000 tweets each hour, rising to 50,000 tweets an hour by day three of the war.” - Peter Cronau, Declassified Australia, November 3, 2022
