This is so typical of today’s GOP. Using a senate mechanism (bipartisan approval of Flag officers) as a partisan tool to advance a political agenda that they know will not work, yet will ensure reelection in the dark backwater from whence they came. Sad, but so predictable from a state that values football over the nations best interest.

@@johnh4686, you know, until you & @kgetz3, I'd only heard that the newer generations are blaming & condemning Boomers for the ills of the nation. Not bothering with any introspection to determine whether anything they've done or are doing are contributing to the problem. I was in the Vietnam War for 2 years, came back brokenhearted & adamantly opposed to it. Nearly went out the bottom with a needle in my arm. Got saved by the Lord, worked as a day laborer, then welder, then went to engineering school (mechanical), designed-built energy infrastructure projects throughout the US; then for 5 years went to Russia & former Soviet Union countries to help them rebuild after the Cold War (which we won). Worked for Enron, saw the rot & left them 3 years before their collapse, warned my broker not to put anyone in the (& at the time they were the most admired Corp in the US, indeed, most of the world). Then worked catastrophic industrial accidents, rebuilding them (came in after 6 fatalities total); and now at 75 am still design-building industrial processing facilities coast-to-coast, border-to-border USA. And raised 3 great young men who have 3 wonderful wives & 10 beloved grandchildren. To the extent I contributed to "the disastrous economic policies (of my generation)", my apologies. And very best wishes to you & your generation as y'all take your swing at the problems of the world. I think if there's anything that those disastrous policies demonstrate, it's that Americans are not fans of making painful choices. Unfortunately, as the sense of outrage & entitlement grows in this society; I doubt the next gens are any bigger fans of sacrifice.

I totally agree with his idea that a line has to be drawn. So as to not allow other bad actors to take the same initiative, Putin did in Ukraine, to other places around the world going forward. Negotiations should always trump conflict in territorial disputes between nations. He is also right about the gerontocracy governing problem in America. Not to mention the nastiness of the discourse in our current political system. Let alone the disembowelment of our manufacturing capability. Which compromises the weaponry availability our armed forces need to fight a war in the future. Good job Mr. Secretary spot on.

We do not need to allocate more money to defense. We can accomplish all goals and fulfil all defense needs (with perhaps a smaller budget than we have today) by creating much better financial tracking, allowing the military (not politicians) to decide how to spend the budget they receive, a strong project and financial oversight by a military-civilian committee, strong penalties for corruption and a complete revision on military contracts to set strict responsibilities, limitations and penalties to both military leaders and defense contractors in case of changes that impact the original contract goals. Accountability, leadership, monitoring and transparency.

In the early nineteen century we had a population in this world that followed a leader that had better served his country being in a straight jacket . Hear we are one hundred years from that period of time we have one such person in Russia a growing threat we in this country going down the same path that made Russia a third class country.

Mr. Gates, good to see you well and still thinking as you always have. Although I would describe myself as a "card carrying Democrat", your quiet, informed and very honest voice ( I don't think telling the press you can't answer questions about many things) has been one of my poles as I look for clarity and substance in the murky waters of the Potomac. There are so many more questions I would have asked, but M, Brennan made good use of the time. Be Well, Be Honest and Be Brave in Your Causes - long life, Mr. G

Not get the logic behind about the difference between US bans Huawei and China bans Micron using National Security as justification. China puts economic growth as top priority and natioanl security is to protect the growth of China as much as possible.

That is a very short sighted explanation for why congress is broken, no longer civil. The only true reason is the incentive structure. Each side is captured by the party extreme because of gerrymandering, and 2 political parties. They should have open primaries, rank choie votong, independent gerrymandering committee. Get money out of politics with public financing

I am watching from Russia, I like to have full information from both sides to analize, it allowes me to navigate these uncalm waters by myself, and also keep clear headedness not to blind myself with ideology or things like that. I still don't know Chinese language and it bothers me a little, I know less about China than I do about Europe or the US.

Multiparty system. Both parties expand their platforms to keep power with party officials (a few dozen people). The land is too vast, the population is too diverse, and technology moves too fast to categorize everyone into two parties.

bigger defense great - we are 31 trillion in debt - how do we do that? Budget process is broken and the consequence is we run deficits and no party is held accountable - here is an idea balance the budget and you don't have to raise the debt limit- forget the chinese and russians they liove over there - our country needs fixing
