I could never understand Americans' fascination with British royals. My own parents made an effort to get to the National cathedral in DC just to get a glimpse of Elizabeth on one of her visits. This country fought a war to get away from Britain and its "royals"! Don't forget!

The funeral for the Queen Mother cost the British people over £5.7 million plus an extra £850,000 for her 'lying in state' costs. I think £7-10 million is a fair estimate, supported by most news reports. Like the original comment says, a lot of good could have been done with that amount of money - long-lasting good, instead of one day of unnecessary pomp.

No no... They're the self preserving rubber stampers... It matters not what legislation government hands them... They just put the 'Head of State' seal of approval on it... They don't even need to read it because government holds the authority of the crown whilst the monarchy is paid in "Grant" money... Ex Royal Navy Officer and UK Column founder, Brian Gerrish once mentioned thee Queen at a talk he was doing.. Someone cheered, Brian then said "Oh, you like the queen do you? Well I've met her twice and I can tell you this, She doesn't like you!" (ie, common folk)

What I cannot fathom is that life for everyday Brits is getting worse and worse. The country is getting deeper and deeper in debt, as are many of it's citizen's. Yet the royal family continue to live a life of luxury which is sometimes televised, it sickens me. They have such a large amount of money and and influence so why don't they commit an incredibly selfless move and use some of the royal cash to help restore the country they represent.

Because that is not their function. You'll notice as I write that the BBC's main story is about some royal woman on some balcony. Not the peace process in Ukraine, not the election. Why? Our establishment wants us to love the royals, and by extension the monarchy. What the monarchy does is hand government power over parliament. Completely arse about face, and since it serves as the ultimate brake on progress of any kind, it serves the establishment very nicely. No doubt Billy the Baldy will be off to have his photo taken at a soup kitchen on Monday, but that's not for anyone's benefit but his own.

Imagine if someone said today “I am anointed by God to represent you. Never understood why anyone would praise other people just because they are a “king and queen” on this earth. The way I see it is everyone is equal on this earth, no one is above or below another person. The Indians from India have been warning us.

What always scared me about monarchies are not the monarchs but the people cheering for them, looking up to them, dreaming of being one of them and sucking up every detail of their lives in the tabloids. Without this deeply rooted underling mentality, monarchy wouldn't mean a thing.

Who is this guy? Brilliant. As an ex British soldier and descendant of the "commonwealth" I fully support this. I realised while in the army that we were nothing more than expendable assets and as civilians were all just tax paying subjects. I love seeing the people waking up. Plenty of people say it, they just aren't given a platform. The mainstream media - which serves the ruling class, as part of the ideological state apparatus - gaslight and manipulate the masses with their propaganda and bully anyone who has an alternative viewpoint, i.e. that of republicanism, which is completely rational and sensible when compared with even the notion of a "monarchy". Also, the police - as part of the repressive state apparatus - did their part in serving the ruling class by arresting people for literally holding signs, expressing their viewpoint. An excellent summary. As we saw the first acts of Charles was to hand over a billion pound estate, tax free, to his already privileged son. I'm ashamed that I live in a country that has a medieval feudal system at it's core. The stench of deference and unearned privilege is a blight on our society. The royals have successfully carved out this 'untouchable' position within the british culture and psyche. This is unacceptable in a modern 21st century society. I started early too. Growing up in a republican household I didn't get past the first day at the militaristic cub scouts as I refused to swear allegiance to the queen. Looking back 50 odd years I'm rather proud I refused but it just didn't seem right at the time and it seems less right now.

Lol USA spends billions at election time every 4 years , and yet they have homeless lining the streets in most states , they have senators mayor's and politicians who have multi millions while their people live on the street , you have billionaires in every country in the world even poor countries with little infrastructure , why shouldn't Britain ? ,

Being from the republic of Ireland I fully understand what the royal family is and the horrors that other countries have had to go through as this country did.. Britain isn't a real democracy as an unelected royal controls the final decisions in Britain.. how do people feel alright about being controlled by some German family..

A bit like how I feel reading someone hypocritically referring to people who have lived in the UK for generations and whose ancestors came here due to legal inheritance from their blood relations and marriage as "German" when the very "horrors that other countries have had to go through as this country did" includes the depopulation of Ireland of most of the people who tried to fight against England and the upper and middle classes including during the period when it was a Commonwealth under Parliamentarian control a la Oliver Cromwell's brutal campaigns there. I mean who is to say that you're Irish and not a descendant of English settlers living on stolen land especially if your surname is "Walsh" which would mean that you are a foreigner in Ireland... Probably from Wales. There are more Irish people in the Americas including non-white direct descendants of people deported and exiled in the 1600s, than in Ireland.

EXACTLY! Alex Lewis in UK comes to mind who lost his limbs to sepsis and couldn't get a decent set of limbs from the NHS and had to fund raise for YEARS, all while the pigs were cruising the globe dining on the best eats and living in huge palaces all while having perfectly functioning limbs, and could have found that money in their sock drawers! (Run on sentence is me fuming while typing).

We in the global South have been told that the monarchy is a symbol and has no power, but no one wants to tell us what the symbol is for and why it's so needed. If it means nothing, then ending it shouldn't be an issue and if it can't be ended because it's a symbol then its supporters need to explain why the symbol is so necessary when it contributes nothing to the good of the ordinary people.
