I'm old enough to remember that the very first thing we made in Home Ec at school was an apron! That's how we learned to sew.

I only had 3 years of home ec. Most was cooking and some etiquette hostess. Then sewing in grade 9. Yes, made an apron. I thought I did pretty good Unfortunately, we moved and the next school was too small . Girls in academic program couldn't take home economics due to stretched staff. I took typing one year and then law by correspondence. I never learned more about sewing. Even though my mom, sisters abd my brother could all sew, knit and crochet.

I crochet everyday. I can watch youtube videos, the news, etc while working. I don't feel like I am wasting time if my hands are busy. I donate hundreds of hats each fall to a local coat drive. Also make lots of shawls and lap blankets for nursing home residents. I get to do what I love and keep someone warm. 🧶

I grew up knowing all 4 of my Nova Scotia grandparents (born in 1899 and all lived into late 90's and early 100's) and one great-grandmother, and believe me, they reused EVERYTHING! "Use it up, wear it out, make-do and do without" was one of their often quoted mottos to live by. Old clothes went into braided and hooked or rag rugs and the better parts of fabrics went into quilts, potholders and aprons,( they were exquisite artistic needlewomen and I'm fortunate enough to have many examples of their works still). Fruits were jellied or dried in slices on long strings across the attics. (green beans were also strung on thread and hung up to dry- called 'leather britches') re-constituted by soaking in well water before cooking, and all kinds of pickles made too. All solid fats and any liquid oils were precious commodities, to be saved, cleaned and then used for medicinal purposes and salves (especially coveted goose grease), or soap making and some very hard fats like tallow from beef, for candles. I had the fun of learning from them and still do pieced and crumb quilting (my new favorite style esp. good to use up fabric too small to cut geometric shapes from!, lol) , crocheted rag rugs, dip and molded candles and homemade soaps from saved clean and de-salted kitchen fats. (comes out alot like a bar of 'Fels Naptha' , gentle and cleans thoroughly and excellent for your complexion!) I can also make white and brown breads and all other types of baking and cooking from scratch, but I never learned to master the wood and oil burning stoves they had, too well, ha. No trip to town (20 miles away!) was ever made without someone asking with a laugh, the WW11 question to save gasoline, "is this trip necessary, can we combine errands or take a neighbor with us?" Great well-read, thrifty and thus thriving people to have the privilege to be related and love! Aaaahhhhh!

My mom wore aprons. After we watched the miracle worker I pretended I was blind for an after noon and followed her around with my eyes shut hanging on to her apron strings. We walked the rows of the garden. We went up and down stairs about 19 times because with 8 kids and all of that laundry that’s what moms do!My mom didn’t see me as a appendage. She knew I was trying to understand how it was to be blind. I am grateful to her forever for letting me trying to learn and understand in my own way. Big love to her!

“I don't think kids nowadays know what an apron is. The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love ❤” Copied and Pasted from “DoYouRemember? Nostalgia Never Gets Old”

Firstly, I wear aprons all day as well and have a complete family of them hanging in the pantry...most I’ve made myself a few gifts made by family. I rarely watch tv, prefer my screen time visiting my you tube friends and learning things. I read every day, sew, knit, dip candles, spin yarns. I write real letters and draw and paint as well. I like to live life on my terms and beliefs not thoseof others. Take care all. Susan

After homework & house chores: writing letters and notes, arts and crafts, baking, reading magazines and Reader's Digests, walks with friends, visits and sleepovers with family. Later I learned to sew, crochet, and cross-stitch. Cherished time at the beach, church choir, attending school activities. Oops, sorry I got carried away reminiscing. Interesting. I wear my apron in my art studio. Haven’t worn one on the kitchen for a long time…. I grew up with a family cottage. When I buy coffee that comes in a plastic coffee canister, I save those for my classroom block center. The children love to build with them! I crochet, sew and read. I'm going to confess. I lost the battle with the containers. I finally bought a set amount of glass containers to use. I buy a big package of containers that stack to send food home with my kids. They're cheap and fit in a tiny space. The random containers everywhere made me crazy. We have silicone ziplock bags for the freezer. It's saved a ton of money. I use a pump sprayer with olive oil, a silicone mat or parchment paper. And yes we save bacon grease :) My Dad grew up in the depression and they used it for everything. Sometimes he'd ask me to drizzle a little on a tomato sandwich and it always went in bean soup.

Your aprons are beautiful. I have an apron I use when my 9 yo granddaughter comes to visit and keep one for her, too. She thinks I bake all of the time, but most of the baking that I do is just to have a fun activity to do with her. Every couple of weeks I bake banana bread for my BFF. I’m visiting her tomorrow, so I’ll bake banana bread this evening to take to her. I bought bananas to ripen last week-nicely brown spotted today. Some of the comments suggest wearing an apron for cleaning-I’ll try that.

My grandmother lived in an apron. Hers were similar in style to the first apron you showed only the prints were much more subtle. I don't remember my mother ever wearing an apron. I wear an apron when I cook or bake certain things, as you say, just to protect my clothes from stains. But not every time. I have only the one and it does have pockets. My mother used to keep bacon drippings and I did too when I used to eat bacon. It is the best for fried potatoes. But sadly, I only eat bacon once or twice a year now. We reuse cottage cheese and yogurt containers, the 32 oz. size. I use them mostly for my homemade chicken broth that I freeze. We also save our Chinese take out containers. We get Chinese take out once a year. But they're handy, too. And what plastic containers we don't use we certainly recycle. We read a lot back in the day! We spent a lot of time at the library. We had a nice stereo system and listened to a lot of music. We watched TV like now, but we had to appreciate our TV shows more because there just weren't anywhere near the number available now. There was no binge watching, lol. We just would hang out with our friends and family a lot more than we do now. Thanks for another good vlog!

Hi, I consider KZread to be my social media. I love that I feel like I’m always learning something and the free movies, TV shows , and documentaries are all I need. My last TV broke in 2016 and haven’t been tempted to get another. Channels like this one keep me inspired and in a more positive mood than when I watched TV.

I'm happy to say that I read 52 books last year! This year I am determined to finish some cross stitch projects... and I can listen to audio books (free via the Libby app) while stitching :) Hubby and I schedule TV time. We have friends that have the TV on all day long and I just don't think that's healthy. We turn it off after watching morning news with coffee, and leave it off all day til about 5 pm.

My kids looooove to do crafts/coloring/calligraphy, hobbies or puzzles while listening to books on tape or old radio shows. Even baking & cooking. Baking is esp nice to classical music. They love me to read outloud to them too. I got 2 youngest teens reading books outloud w/a friend too. I told them if they read To Kill A Mockingbird, I will get movie out of library, the old good one.

I do want to brag about a wonderful thing I found years ago, I don’t know from what secondhand shop. A white 5.5 X4.5 and 2.5 in. deep white enamel container with lid and a little red trim. It is my bacon grease container. It makes me feel lucky because I’ve never seen it before. I just remembered I have a big one down cellar. I rarely use it, but I’m not giving it up. 💙

Wow your video is spot on with my life today. I just got an apron given to me today from a friend. I stopped by her house to gie her some fresh made biscuits, watermelon jelly I made and a dozen eggs.... just a little cheer me up gift.... and she had a box of Aprons and gave me one. Its a full size one with pockets. That's the key... pockets. Got to hae them. Isn't God good? The orange marmalade looks good. Anytime you don't have to peel the oranges works for me. I save my bacon grease and also my oil. for the oil I have a special container which has a strainer on it and a lid I can get 2 to 3 uses out of the oil. I save those butter wrappers too. I used to read alot but I'll admit I don't do it as much. I definitely could benefit from less screen time.

About five years ago my mom got a lot of free fabric. My mom let me pick out fabric that I liked and she made me a bunch of aprons. I have every day aprons and holiday aprons. All for free and made by my mom, which makes them special to me. I love watching tv in the evening while I'm crocheting. During the day I listen to your videos while I'm cleaning and cooking. Most of my day is taking care of my mother-in-law. I love to read, but I'm so tired by the end of the day I can not focus on a book. So, I sit down watch a little tv and crochet for a bit before I fall asleep. I don't get weekends off or any day off right now. My mother-in-law needs full time care, but I feel blessed that I an able to keep my mother-in-law at home with us and she will pass with family around her. I would not be able to do this without the help of Hospice. They are angels!

Another old fashioned thing that saves money is fasting. It saves on meals You can look it up it's definitely takes self control and is hard at first but if you practice it maybe once a week it gets easier. It helps keep your medical bills low too because if you do a 20+ hour fast it kills cancer cells, helps with diabetes, etc. Definitely something to look into.

As a child .. playing games like jacks, hopscotch, bottle caps and jump rope or double dutch .. swinging on swings at the park .. watercolor painting seashells I collected from the beach .. baking with my Nana! 🍞😊💕 In this video Emmy, you and Paul have brought to mind some warm and comforting memories: my Nana, IN HER APRON, making her famous, sweet, delicious cast iron skillet pancakes and corn cakes. These were reserved for Sundays and special occasions only! Then, my Papa, with his treasured can of "liquid gold" bacon grease stored, in the "icebox", in a Maxwell House can (his favorite coffee, purchased at our local A & P which still had sawdust on the floors) and again, reserved for special occasion recipes. I still crotchet and read, but not as much as I used to do. Now that my kids are grown, I don't bake as much either. What I should be doing with my free time is writing letters and sending cards to elderly and homebound people I know. My elderly mother loved getting a card with a personal note from a grandchild or family friend. Soon after walking in the door at my mother's home, she would say, "Did you see the card so and so sent me?" Thanks for inspiring me.

Old cafeteria lady here…My grandmothers wore aprons too, but I wear them mostly as protection for the food I am cooking. There could be fuzz or hair on my clothes and an apron keeps that from getting in the food. Also, I have cooking aprons and cleaning aprons. I don’t wear an apron to cook in that I may have earlier say cleaned the toilet in. Never wear your cooking aprons out of the kitchen either. You want them to stay as sanitary as possible. This is what they taught us in training for the school cafeteria. I learned a lot those years!

I keep my bacon grease also, best to fry potatoes in EVER! You taught me in previous video to keep the butter wrappers and I use them all the time now instead of throwing away. I have an apron that was my Mom's and it is a Christmas apron so I always wear that when baking for Christmas. I was taught the first step of cooking was to put on an apron from my Grandma so I always wear an apron. I have a blue one that says Queen of the Kitchen but my very favorite apron to wear was made by an Amish woman and she made the big deep pockets out of pot holders!. Yes, you can put your hands in the pockets and use the apron to pull the pan out of the oven! No more looking for potholders. It is genius! I do a little bit of screen time in the evenings but it is television oriented, I love to watch HGTV and The Cooking Channel. After working on a computer all day, I don't want to be on my phone or a computer. I love to crochet and read. The crocheting I can do while listening to the television. but I need it quite in order to read. As a young girl, I remember playing board games, cards and putting puzzles together with my siblings. We had a television but it only received two maybe three channels. The orange marmalade looks delicious! Keep the videos coming, I look forward to them twice a week.

I've seen this work with lots of clear containers. Then, after they're used to start your plants, you could recycle them. OH! I keep the heat set at 60 and if it creeps up with the winter sun I shut it off. I just used my bacon grease yesterday when we had breakfast for dinner. I found a bacon grease strainer /keeper for less than $10 that’s really cute and it keeps spices and bits of bacon from the grease. I enjoy coming u with more plant based recipes that tastes good (have had a couple of them that bombed out). I enjoy doing my Davidic dancing using music I am able to find on KZread. My son and I enjoy shopping and fixing meals together that we both enjoy. He is not plant based like me, but we have found foods and seasonings we like together. Since we are planning to move to another state soon, we are using a lot of our time sorting things and packing things up. I batch cook most of my food like my chili. I make a big pot, freeze most of it and put a few containers in the fridge. If I made it too spicy, I serve it over whatever kind of rice I have on hand. I use my mason jars with a screen mesh to sprout seeds to go into some of my cooking and/or salads. But that is on hold until my son and I can get moved.

Hi Emmy and Paul! Yes, I love aprons. I fact I am getting ready to make one because they are falling apart and sadly beyond repair. They are definitely clothes savers. I love the marmalade trick! I had been saving apple, pear, and orange scraps in 2 1gallon zip bags in the freezer. Yesterday I turned those scraps into jelly. It came out really yummy and so pretty. When I made my turkey stock I let the fat solidify on top of the stock, scraped it off, melted it, strained it, put it in a jar and it is in the fridge next to the bacon fat. If you are making chicken soup, use the turkey fat to sautee your veggies in. Thanks for the fantastic video! Have a blessed day! 🌺

Auntie Emmy and Uncle Paul, My 14 year old daughter just got into baking and I purchased her first William Sonoma apron. Her late father gave me mine in 2007 the year before she was born. It was an investment $25 for an apron is a lot but with care it will last long time I am also focusing less on screentime for me grad school program which requires a lot of screen time. So for a break I'm working on my crochet using my yarn stash first for projects. No yarn buying!

We use a lot of plastic containers for freezing. I keep a box in the kitchen during the winter to put empty and washed containers in for storage. They will go in the basement pantry til next harvest time. Keeps the cabinets less cluttered.

Reusing plastic containers that something came in are great to use when you bring a sick person soup or send guests home with leftovers ( common in many cultures) because you don't need them back. Also good for group homes for DD they go through a lot of plastic containers and don't have money to replace them. Actually good place to donate clothes to as well.

Dear Emmy&Paul,i chuckle a little bit because 28 years ago my husband and i designed an apron for me to wear when i cook! I still wear that apron i sewed on my sewing machine and yes i had to have 2 pockets on it! Pockets are handy for everything! I work full time outside of the home now so finding down time is a luxury these days! I still crochet but not as much as i would prefer! I use small containers for leftover food to pack in my lunch to take to work with me instead of buying food! Yes,those containers can explode, and do often in my kitchen! I do purge often! Love your orange marmalade recipe, looks lovely. Do you use your marmalade on biscuits or bagels? I figure it would be good on both! Yum!

I, too, am a big fan of aprons. A few years ago, I had had enough (there's my word again) of struggling to corral my plastic ware. I did what you showed -- matching bottoms to tops -- and then used a deep plastic dishpan to hold them. When the dishpan is full, I don't bother saving anything another butter or cottage cheese container. Instead, it goes in my recycle bin. I always have enough containers for what I need and sometimes I replace one I've used many times with a new one and recycle the old. This system really works well for me and is one I recommend. Thanks for yet another great video.

Very important to check places like Facebook for a community upcycle group. We belong to one and there is always someone needing recyclable containers or anything that is in excess in your home, someone is out there needing it.

Yes, I remember TOO well a time in my life 30+ years ago when I moved into an apartment and had NO dishes . . . asked coworkers for ANY of their "extra" containers. They obliged quickly and I found myself with temporary Cool Whip and margarine "cereal" and "soup" bowls. 👍😃 And oh how grateful and thankful I was to have them!! 👏🥰 I think when I do my next purge of them, I will remember this and offer them free on Marketplace or Freecycle in case someone near me is in need like I was. 👌☺️ Thanks for this timely reminder!! 👏🤩

ANother wonderful, fun and uplifting video. Thank you. Your marmalade looks delicious. I used make so many jars of jams, jellies and marmalades because I had access to free fruit, either grown by us, grown by friends or gleaned from the woods around us (we have masses of wild grapes, raspberries and blueberries in our woods). These jams, coupled with some homade bread make a lovely gift and I was asked every year by a couple of friends for their favorites. Orange Marmalade is my personal favorite and yours looks so bright and yummy. I have been an avid quilter and sewer, which I still do but not as much. I have taken on the goal of increasing my time doing this and NOT buying anymore fabric, because I have more than enough to keep me sewing for years to come!

Plastic containers were one of the items that were always wanted by the staff of our soup kitchen. They used them to hold the take-out meals for clients who needed to grab and go. I would cull down my plastic containers every month and send them to the soup kitchen. I thought it was a great way to give them another life.

With saved tomato seeds, we are going to put four of them in a milkjug and winter sow a few. We did them inside the breezeway and we got a lot of plants last year. This year we are doing a few outside to get a head start on the garden. We also got a tiny grow light from amazon to get a few peppers and tomatoes going early.

Aprons are a must! I don’t know how people cook and can without them! I have several and a few for different holidays too! Our internet was acting up this last couple weeks and so we pulled out old DVDs and I read two books! I used to do a lot more crafts before computers and cellphones. Made each of our kids several memory scrapbooks…now I struggle to make a few birthday cards. Need to turn off the tube and get creative!😊
