Forgotten Treasure: Discovering Yeovil Town Railway Station

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yeovil Town Station, Somereset, was an impressive building. Being originally built in the 1860s, it was a joint venture by the LSWR and the B&ER (and then later the GWR). It had three passenger platforms and several lines for goods.
When the Beaching Axe fell, the line from Yeovil to Taunton closed, and Yeovil Town fell into the hands of the local council, who destroyed the building to make way for a car park. Today, nothing is left but a simple plaque.
I'm working on a a video about the entire line. If you have any footage, photos or stories, please let me know. Thank you.

Oh it’s my childhood … many happy hours on my bike watching watching watching. The demolition if the station a railway is such a travesty and so shortsighted. Yeovil was at one time blessed with such an exciting railway system….

Such a professional presentation. Yeovil Town was obviously a very atmospheric station. Thank you for taking the time to record, edit and post. I for one certainly appreciate it.

Interesting. I rented the transfer shed at Yeovil Junction from late 1971 to 1982. This was used to transfer goods from one private railway to another. I was told a man was killed in there once. Also a locomotive went straight down over the bank at the end of the turntable. Prisoners of war carved badges in the soft bank opposite the transfer shed. Long gone now.

Much appreciated👍 A well presented history of the station & lines. Shame it closed, looked very impressive. The demise of the LSWR West of Salisbury is there for all to see plus the trimming back or GWR lines too.

My memories of Yeovil go back to the 50s when we changed there to go to Maiden Newton for Bridport. Sad to see the devastation of so much important heritage. Enjoyed the video, look forward to more!

No, I think you`re thinking of School for Scoundrels which did indeed feature a Station named Yeovil but it wasn`t filmed in Yeovil.

If you are thinking 'School for Scoundrels' then the railway footage was not taken at Yeovil but Hertford East Station, Hertfordshire.

3:00 Blimey were the Glovers at home? Are the fine looking urns on the turntable for decoration (!) or some sort of safety valve for loco vacuum power of the thing? A reflection now that I've been through the ordeal of watching the video. The script here 8:25 set me thinking that the probable seeds of these tin shed dwellers' demise have maybe been sown by internet shopping. Let's see how these usurpers like it up 'emselves!
