    Except for anyone who watched the movies because the "Highlander" part is about the protagonist being from the scottish highlands. The "only one" tagline is about the mortal combat between the immortal that the titular Highlander is part of. Hell, the main villain is a member of the Kurgan tribe. Not a goddamn highlander.

    At least Colin Delaney is not on this list... yet, as I believe his character was actually rather notable in ECW. I have to admit, him getting squashed by guys like Big Daddy V, Mark Henry, Kane and others was actually pretty entertaining. Then they turned him heel, and that was the end of Delaney's run.

    I know all of those expect Shaniqua and Kenzo Susuki. The rest I remember quite well. Orlando Jordan and Heidenreich were given lots of TV time considering their position on the card, Zach Gowen worked a program with McMahon so many people probably remember him and Sean O'Haire did get lots of hype back in then.

    There's actually a reason why Tajiri didn't go through all the way with the whole Yakuza gimmick with Akio and Sakoda. Tajiri was afraid that the actual Yakuza would deem it all tasteless and a mockery to them that they would possibly bring backlash against them. For Tajiri to believe that the Yakuza would do something must mean they were probably serious business.

  • @AlexFyrehartDGAFCave
    @AlexFyrehartDGAFCave6 жыл бұрын

    From what I recall that "Totally Not The Yakuza" gimmick thing was axed because Tajiri feared the real Yakuza wouldn't take too kindly to the whole thing. Could be bullshit but that's what I remember hearing.

    I actually remembered a couple of these guys like Jesus, The Highlanders, Gymini, and the Heart Throbs. The only reason I remember the Heart Throbs is this one time on Sunday Night Heat against a match with Hurricane and Rosey, who I was really big on at the time, one of them got a nasty bump that made their eye swell up. And that was the highlight of their career I guess.

  • @swk258
    @swk2587 жыл бұрын

    I remember Antonio from the Heartthrobs, actually! He was a very successful indy wrestler in a promotion called New England Championship Wrestling, whose shows I frequented as a kid and still see every couple of years or so. He is known as Antonio "the Promise" Thomas and is a multi-time champion in NECW. I always wondered about his WWE run, since they always harped on the fact that he was a "former WWE Superstar." Now I know exactly the extent of his run. Thanks, Brian.

    I've tried making a list of every male Superstar who, between March 2002 and now, competed more than once on either Raw, SmackDown, Superstars, or ECW on SciFi AFTER it was unofficially merged with SmackDown in the fall of 2007. I managed to come up with 287 names - 143 I consider Raw guys and 144 I consider SmackDown guys. Funny how it came out almost even.

    I always thought The Highlanders wouldn't of been bad had they of been given wins and a manager who worked well as a mouthpiece for the crew. My thoughts would of been to pair the duo up with 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and make Piper come off as a jaded older talent who are using these two men to settle old scores and to get himself over again with them being his muscle. And that also would of taken care of the issue the WWE made when they made Piper the manager/mouthpiece to Sean O'Haire, a man who honestly could wrestle and who didn't need someone to speak for him

    If WWE pushed through with the "Hirohito" character, Akio and Sakoda would have been perfect as his "Yakuza" Bodyguards.

    TNA was like reverse developmental for WWE. You had WWE guys going over and dominating. But you can count the amount of guys who moved to WWE and had any impact on one fist.

    Antonio from the Heartthrobs was signed from a local indy I was a fan of at the time, we were all desperate for him to do well but alas, it wasn't to be. The Highlanders had some really funny vignettes when they were first introduced, eating trash out of a barrel in Times Square, etc. "I'm Robby!"

    The main thing I remember about The Gymeni is they somehow managed to get their own action figures, which stayed on the shelves of my Walmart for YEARS. It took a removal of all WWE Jakks figures in favor of Mattel to finally get rid of them.

    Ah, Sakoda... I always got more of a "Yakuza" vibe from him than from Akio for some reason. So it's good to see him on this list. Also, I'm expecting some top-quality picks in the top 8, like Colin Delaney, Bam Neely, and that tag team that Michelle McCool managed that I somehow never saw wrestle (even though apparently they had a PPV match for the Tag Titles...). Oh, and Mike Knox, solely for your take on the "who was that?" moment.
