Forgotten Realms Lore - The Second Sundering

Ойындар

Episode 20 - Second Sundering. The somewhat vague event that pushed DnD into 5th edition. Not to be confused with the first sundering, which tore Abier and Toril in two. Or the Elf Sundering that created Evermeet. This is the Second Sundering. Whibbly Whommy Timey Whimey.

    There's a bit of a mistake around the 2 minute mark. The Sundering, as it used to be known in prior editions and changed to The First Sundering with 5th edition caused a lot more changes to the world than indicated. At the time of the casting Toril was dominated by a supercontinent with a few other, further continents. Faerun did not exist yet, as its landmass was joined with what would eventually become Maztica, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara. When the Elves finished their casting they caused massive earthquakes and tsunamis that devastated the coasts of nearly the entire world and ripped huge chunks off those lands to form Evermeet. Countless peoples of all races perished, including the greatest Dark Elven city, taking much of its empire with it. The High Elves committed genocide to create their new home and broke apart the supercontinent into what is known in current Forgotten Realms.

    As a character in the 5ed adventure set in the 10 towns i hijacked the campagn and made it a search for the history of fallen netherse city in the area. I made it a historian who was obsessed with the netherese. Its like anchient deity of lce yah yah but what about those ruins over there...the whole thing seemed railroaded and over the cr the dm was making the players but to be fair it was his forst time and he was given the bad advise that the players could handle there level +3 in CR.

    This is what I needed when I was playing Baldur's Gate 3, and the Narrator says "This magical tome is filled with the names of gods, once lost but now restored after the Second Sundering, all silently recorded by this book." So the Second Sundering was literally just the in-world cause for the lore rewrite for the start of 5th Edition!? That's wild...

    Jorphdan, I have been lurking your channel for months now and constantly looking for an opportunity to throw in my two cents and show my gratitude for your videos and hard work in the process of making them. however, it hasn't shown up yet and I'm impatient so here it is. You have very quickly become not only my favorite RPG channel, but my favorite channel in general. I am in love with the detail and description you provide and you are the reason I look forward to Wednesday every week. i don't think you get enough credit, but i don't have squat to donate to you. so instead i offer my earnest thanks and ask a few things in turn. First is a video ( or series of videos ;) ) about your experiences in the forgotten realms and how you got into D&D. Also, now that the main events of the timeline are covered, I believe you could really assist many newer dungeon masters if you focused your, for lack of a better term, regional videos, on the sword coast before branching out to further areas. I.E. waterdeep, neverwinter, baldurs gate, the high moorlands, etc. It is just a suggestion, however I know it would personally help me and from what i can divine, your other viewers would appreciate some sort of geographical organization as well so it''s easier to keep up with you putting so much information out so fast. Thanks for your time and i hope you take my wall of text into consideration. TL;DR 1. I'm a huge fan 2. please make some sort of pattern for how your videos come out. P.S. i have a bunch of really good maps of Faerun. if you want or need links to those or any other sort of assistance in your research, i would be ecstatic to be involved in the creation of your content.

  • @Jorphdan

    Hey! Thanks for watching and enjoying the channel. Don't worry about donating, I don't have anything set up like that anyway. Instead the best thing to help the channel is share with your fellow gamers who might enjoy it. To answer your comments, I've been toying with the idea of running a weekly vlog. Where I'd talk about DM'ing my tabletop game along with whatever thoughts pop into my head. I hesitate because I think people enjoy the lore and wouldn't necessarily be receptive to a video blog. Sounds like a few subscribers would at least be interested in extra content like that. But in a vlog I could answer questions like how I came to play DnD etc. Ideally I think this would be live so people could ask questions during the vlog. Unfortunately my internet connection is to slow for live streaming, something I'm trying to fix. However there's always twitter for people to send questions, so we'll see! To you second point, yes I believe there should be some pattern to the videos. Starting Wed I'm going to start videos on the various planes of existence. Starting with the inner planes and working my way out. Although this isn't forgotten realms specifically it's DnD lore and I find the planes interesting. Also my Nine Hells and Abyss videos have been more popular and others have asked for future videos on the outer planes. I think after that specific videos on regions and cities in the forgotten realms will be in order. I've fallen in love with Al Quadim so I'd love to do a section of videos on that area. Thanks again for watching! And thanks for a great comment!

It makes me have questions about a purely theoretical character I have in my head (A Gold Dwarf blacksmith who finds himself being visited by Moradin who bestows his gift upon him as reward for his fine craftsmanship): What happened to the gold dwarf realm down near the great rift? We don't get to find out given that 5e only covers the Sword Coast and not all of Faerun.

    Based on the novels which tie in to them (by Ed Greenwood, Erin M Evans, etc.) Out of the Abyss takes place mid 1486 DR, and Storm King's Thunder is the winter of 1486-1487 DR. I'm not sure about the others, but I assume they're earlier. In terms of canon, WotC have tried to be relatively vague about timing of things, with the intention of letting anyone's home game be played in a way that doesn't explicitly go against what's canonically written, no matter which order they play the published adventures in. So apart from novel tie-ins, which by necessity have a specific date associated with them, I think it'll be hard to find out when things take place.

  • @transient_moonlight

    @transient_moonlight

    Death Masks comes before SKT (there is even some SKT foreshadowing in that novel), and the date is explicitly said to be 1491+ DR. Weird :/

    Wow that's weird. The Devil You Know is also meant as a SKT tie-in, and it's set early 1487. I guess that's just another example of WotC trying to confuse us through their vagueries. Damn it guys! I want some strict canon here!

    Just a small correction: Faerun was MOSTLY restored to the pre-spellplague state. Examples of changes are the obvious Luskan, The area known as Elfharrow (it used to be The Shaar, but it's a desolate desert now) and even the Halflings of Lurien are mentioned as having "been lost, but are now showing that they've survived the events". Also I believe there's one earthmote still flying about that no one can explain (I believe it's in the pirate isles, but I could be mistaken, I'd have to re-find my source). Otherwise, good stuff.

    Bhaal is in Sword Coast Legends, but canonically he was sealed away in Baldur's Gate II. There are scattered cultists and worshipers attempting to bring him back. Cyric (also in SCLs) was imprisoned for Mystra's murder during the Spellplague. He's still in astral prison.

    What I find odd/interesting about the Sundering, is that WotC tried to turn FR into what fans wanted, including more influence by the Baldur's Gate franchise, but decided to keep Abdel Adrian canon, who is probably the most universally hated aspect of the entire BG franchise for most fans. Since I remember that you once said that you never played those games, here's a "brief" summary of the situation. So the games are universally loved and by are by many hailed as one of the (if not the best) videogame roleplaying experiences to date. But instead of making the games canon, WotC decided to make the godawful novels that are "based" on the games canon. Now, the games also took some liberty with the lore and canon, but the novels downright _butchered_ the canon. Then with 5th edition WotC introduced the "Murder in Baldur's Gate" campaign setting, which reintruced Coran, who is one of the companions from the first BG game, and made him one of the dukes of the city of Baldur's Gate, put up a statue of fanfavourite companion Minsc on the market place and made Viekang, one of the other Bhaalspawn in the series (he was very much a joke character, who had the special curse/ability that allowed him to randomly teleport somewhere when he feels frightened, out of selfpreservation, but has zero control over it). Murder in Baldur's Gate is also the story about how Bhaal is restored to life. Then as a follow up we got the Legends of Baldur's Gate comics, featuring Minsc as one of the main characters alongside some new characters, including Coran's son Krydle (who did not exist till that point, as far as I know). The story makes a handful of references to the games, including mentioning Neera a bunch of times, who is _exclusive_ the the Enhanced Editions. According to some of the writers at Beamdog (the folks behind the Enhanced Editions) at this point WotC decided to mix up the canon from the novels and the games, keeping the main character from the novels (the aforementioned Abdel Adrian) and keeps referencing events from the games, but leaves other aspects deliberately vague. Oh yeah, Minsc also appears in the Neverwinter MMO, though that part makes storywise zero sense, since during that time he was either dead or a statue (oh yeah, that is also never explained. In the comics a wizard brings Minsc statue to life but at no point it's made clear if that is the real Minsc who got petrified or if the wizard created a copy of Minsc or how that works. Brie When I start a game in BG EE and see the premade characters and find Abdel Adrian and his stats I think for myself: No way I would take such a character with me. It would have been better if they had removed Abdel as portrayed in those novels and put a construction made by themselves but according with what fans of the BG series would have wanted as that has attracted newbbies who knew only the game to the FR world and the D&D like myself.

    Thay is still ruled by the Dead and necromancy is the only arcane school practiced there which as it was in 4e 😂. Other wizards that practice the other schools of Magic Are renegade or rogue Red Wizards and they live outside of Thay in self exile until Szass Tam a very powerful Lich who rules that now is removed from power or destroyed. Also I would still like the return of the Swordmage class brought back in 5e from 4e.

    Well, there is the Eldritch Knight as a subclass to the fighter, but I doubt that's what you want. The thing you probably want is actually an arcane tradition for the wizard class that is found in Adventurer's Guide to the Sword Coast, where you have the Bladesinger tradition.

    So Jorphdan, first off I love your videos man. I think I blew through all of them in a few days of commuting to work. Awesome stuff for helping anyone understand the lore and chronology of it. I've grown a lot more knowledgeable of Faerun's lore because of you, and myself and my players thank you! That said, I have a question about the second sundering. You said that it was kind of a reset button as everything kinda went back to where it was. Does this include the actual land structure? For example: after the spellplague, the land of Faerun looked a lot different the pre-spellplague. Chult even broke off from the main continent and floated away from it a bit. Did all that stuff "heal" after the second sundering? Is the world of Faerun as it looked BEFORE the spellplague now?

  • @Jorphdan

    @Jorphdan

    We don't have large maps of 5th edition DnD. Just the Sword coast but essentially yes. Chult came back and is a peninsula again, the Sea of Fallen Stars rose back up to it's pre-spellplague levels etc. Not everything was magically changed back, Neverwinter was still destroyed and is currently rebuilding. Evermeet returned to the ocean, the great chasm filled in and is magically no more. It's currently more accurate to use a 3.5 map than a 4th edition map. Won't know 100% everything on changes until WotC releases a 5th edition map larger than just the sword coast. Perhaps with the new adventure it will expand down to show off Chult, or more. I'm glad you enjoy the videos, thanks for watching :D

    As far as I'm concerned the world(s) of Toril(-Abeir) simply ended in 1385. I usually start my campaigns somewhere in the 1360 - 1376 years (a mix of 2nd and 3rd edition), but when 1385 comes, unless the PCs have Spelljammer'd their way off-planet, KABOOM all gone.

    The whole episode with fourth edition really did some damage to the lore. I still wonder how anyone thought that the lore changes to fourth edition were a good idea because they changed so much that it no longer was the same setting - and while I see that as understandable for some elements, they seemed to focus on what people liked about FR. As for reset buttons - they kinda teach the audience to not care. I'm just glad that I can play recent modules without having to adjust them to a setting state I don't hate. But if people will look back at this in ten years, it will be seen as a sort of dork age.

(So maybe it's the connecting point) Unrelated: if Ao was split into Behemoth and Tiamat back before the very first split of Aber-Toril, how did he split Aber and Toril in the first place? And how is he still around these days to influence the gods?

    Question: If a campaign setting is based on canon lore and the players or the DM enact changes that alter the majority of the lore itself, would those changes be considered canon to the party and their gameplay with that instance of the setting or is considered aby-product of the free will the player and DM are applying when making choices or allowing certain events to affect the setting in a major way? I assume any campaign the players would play would be considered an altered history of the canon lore to avoid conflicts whenever a new game is started or an update is either applied or left out in a running game.

    I feel like there is a reference in Princes of the Apocalypse that states it takes place in 1491 DR. And I know that the starter set adventure references the eruption of Mount Hotenow as being about 50 years previous, so if you know the date of that, you can infer the current year on the timeline. I know when I started my game, I told my players it was 1481 DR because I misremembered what I read previously. I ended up retconning to 1491 after I reread some things.
