Caught one of my students watching this video during class today when he should have been working. Honestly, I couldn't be mad even though I had to make him shut it off. At least the student has good tastes in videos!!
I would go through it and refresh the engine , restore the seat , cleanup the interior and kinda put it back like it was. I think the service truck configuration could be super handy when you go out to bring back an abandoned vehicle, what with the compressor and all the tool storage! I like the truck, it’s pretty straight and didn’t even fuss with you about the rad leaks all that way home! If I lived nearby I would help you with it!

Derek, my thoughts on what to do with this truck would be make a project out of it. Pull the engine and tranny, do a quick refresh of the engine with new rings, bearings, and rework the valves, seals and gaskets. Then replace the clutch, make needed brake repairs. For the body, clean up the rust, and preserve the rest of the surface, maybe even apply a VGG wrap. Obviously you would redo the interior. Then use the truck around your home, for running to town for parts and supply's. You could even use it for resurrection's, (take your tools and parts with you) if you had a helper ride along with you to drive it back. Maybe you could even have a selection process and pick a fan to ride along and help and drive. A lot of possibility's.
@algorithms-memo104

The decision probably got made months ago, but I'm thinking you've brought home enough GM products with good-enough 350s to just swap one out for this engine, then you have one to get rebuilt nicely and drop into whatever car or truck could use it. I don't know enough about your business to know whether there's room in your service fleet for this one, but if so just throw some VGG branding on the doors and throw on some wiper blades? Maybe even a seat? Or a temp gauge that's not broken off, naah! Thanks for the excellent channel!

don’t let our guy fool us. his best gal is with him all the time & all the way…I remember when he quit his full time job to do VGG. she’s never outside of shouting distance & that’s pretty amazing. they’ve come a long way & deserve all the accolades they’ll receive.
We had a lot of these 3/4 ton work trucks. They were all 350’s with 3 speed auto. With 411 gears and one 16 gallon fuel tank, the range was about 80 miles and that’s how far our plant was from the nearest large town. No aircon, no radio, great in the summer in the south. We had 2 colors of interiors, either tan or blue. The local upholstery shop kept two spare seats in stock, a tan and a blue. We generally wore them out about once a year. Looks like he drove that seat about 30 years.

My dad and I used one just like this in NC he picked up from a natural gas company. Used it for mowing lawns when I was in high school forever. The box was bolted to the frame though instead of on top of the bed. Awesome truck all 3gal per mile and all 😂
I'd like to see you bring the truck back around to just a good old pickup. Seems solid enough and worth a few hours and a few dollars of work to make it a reliable work truck again.
I really love these videos but what really makes my day is when Deric shows the back roads through the country. I was raised on a 130 acre farm in southern IL and I miss the old days, now I’m stuck in the city just trying to find that country road that will take me home again.😊

Derek, when pouring ANYTHING from o bottle you have to side pour it. Take the “bottle”, turn it on it’s side and pour slowly. No more glug, glug.
I would say keep it as a service truck but deck it out with organized tool storage on the sides and add the slide out deck boxes in the bed. Then when you are going to the different shows (Cleetus and Cars and such) you have the "Vice Grip Garage" service truck ready with everything a feller needs to keep his vehicles race worthy. Or... it becomes the Vice Grip Garage mobile merch truck.... it's a store on wheels!! :) Whatever you do with it, a feller is here for it.
Keep it as a service truck or put on board air on ramp truck, love the channel, and you saving old steel. Keep doing what you do sir, I watch all the episodes over and over and learn something new each time. Love how your boys are getting older doing what you do to continue your legacy. Very cool. I'm all in for refreshing the old girls heartbeat and keeping her just the way she is! Hopefully that air tank pump contraption works! A feller never knows when he might need a shot of air somewhere! Good buy Brother Derek!

Such cool stuff, so different nowadays I don't think anyone will be pulling a 50 year old rav 4 out of a shed in 2070 and running it home haha. These old rigs are so cool
A working radio!? Must be a sign. I would love to see this one fixed up, you could even do a series on that, and use it to revive some other projects closer to home. Great job Mr. Bieri!!!
I know you've done it before, but I'd love to see it again with a different engine. Do as cheap a rebuild on that old engine as you can. Keeping in mind most of us guys could learn a thing or 3, how to do it on a budget. The wife and kids gotta eat you know ;) Thank you Derek and especially the family supporting him being so busy.
These are the best episodes VGG produces. Much more of these and I'll sub again.
At 15:22, Derek says that Rochesters could be good carbs if you dial them. I agree, although I bet a LOT of people would disagree with us! Back in the day, I was working at an Oldsmobile/Buick/GMC dealership and I rebuilt a shit ton of those things. Naturally, they were all fucked up when they came to me, but I almost never had to do anything more than put a gasket kit into them, maybe replace the floats, and once they were "dialed in," as Derek would say, they were fantastic. Somewhere I think I still have a couple of homemade tools I fabricated to speed things up. The only one I have (that I know for sure where it is) is an Asia-made 1" combination wrench that I bought cheap from some hardware store and ground down the sides of the open end to fit the hex on the fuel filter housing. Remember the old brass fuel filters on the Rochesters? Good times!

This truck reminds me of my uncle's. He started teaching me A C. Around 10 years old . This will hopefully one of y favorites from ya.
I got to put together an 87 3/4 ton with my long lost dad when i was 25. It was worse than this truck, got good body parts, a rebuilt 355 etc and painted it primer black. Drove it as a daily for 5 years. Ran out of room in my driveway after getting a big block pro street s10 project. Gave the 87 to my dad for free with the intention to keep it in the family and to get it back one day. Lots of special memories. It's what I had when I got sole custody of my son and daughter when they were little. The truck was a family member. My father immediately yanked the 355 for his truck which him and my half brother blew up in just a few months, gave away the trans and sold the roller to someone to rob parts for their mud truck. They screwed up, accidentally crushed the cab and scrapped the rest. I'd give anything I own besides my house to have it back.

Remington fits the truck really well. Personally I think you should clean it up, maybe teach the kiddos how to freshen up a small block Chevy, and fix all the service gear on it. Could come in really really handy there on Rusty Acres
The air compressor is a large version found on semi trucks, they are water cooled as to why it’s hooked to the heater loop. Basically a mini V4 engine under there. Sweet old service truck
90's Shania was really something to behold.
A guy just never gets tired of seeing a feller on here. Long time fan and love the content as usual.
Hello Derek, I'd love to see the truck go back to original. Strip off the tool box, air tank and all the accessories from under the hood. Naturally you'd have to redo the seat and give the engine a breath of the Tennessee fresh air refreshing to make sure it'll keep running another 100k or so. Give it a good washing and then use your special Patina Preserver Gloss Finish. You'd have to either get another tail gate or Jimmy rig something better than what's there now. That's what I'd do to it if she was mine. P. S. I love all your shows. 👍👍👍You got 3 thumbs up from me!
