    The diamond file is useful for sharpening fishing hooks. The notch in the end is useful as a hook remover, as well for installing and removing small springs.

    I carried a Wave daily for more than 30 years, and I knew about and used the diamond hone. What I wasn't able to do with it was sharpen the Wave blades on it. They fixed that with the removable file/hone on the Surge, which I now carry. Sadly, the Surge gives up the micro-screwdriver - as a spectacle wearer I used that numerous times. I still haven't found the reason for the notch at the tip of the file/hone - I'd love to know.

  • @NGMonocrom

    @NGMonocrom

    2 жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately, no. The fastest way to get a sharp edge on any blade is with a diamond hone. I'd suggest checking out the offerings from DMT, and Smith's sharpening stones. If you go to smkw.com and type in those keywords into the Search bar, you'll get a good number of results.

  • @NGMonocrom

    I recall that Leatherman introduced their first version Wave decades ago, and then almost immediately replaced it with the Gen. 2 version. Gen 3. only very recently came about with the replaceable wire cutters. Victorinox was a bit late into the modern multi-tool game. So if they did have such a file first, it would be on one of their older, more traditional models. Honestly, I collect Victorinox knives. Have never encountered a diamond file on one of their folding knife models.

    I have one of the older Wave tools. It has separate blade's for the 2 screwdrivers instead of the changeable screwdriver bit's in the new Wave I have. I bought the newer Wave because I shorted a screw while tightening it and melted the fillips head screwdriver. I still keep the old one in a tool bag and still use it. Everything still works except the fillips.

    I would strongly discourage using the diamond file to sharpen a quality knife unless you absolutely have to. It's not the appropriate dimension and the hinge makes it difficult to maintain the appropriate angle without marring the blade. A real diamond sharpener with appropriate lubrication properties is fairly inexpensive. In my opinion, It's not worth the risk to cheap out and misuse tools.

  • @NGMonocrom

    @NGMonocrom

    3 жыл бұрын

    You're not supposed to put any sort of lube on a diamond hone. Literally, none of them; regardless of who makes the hone or what shape they used. Flat hone resembling a traditional sharpening stone, cylindrical rod shaped hone, or even a rare diamond V-shaped one. Also, when dealing with a sharpener that is significantly small or thin, such as this one, just move the sharpener across the blade instead of the other way around. Works just fine. Also, on my Wave, the file locks open rock solid. Zero wiggle. Just needs a steady hand and you're good.
