I heard they never released it stateside because no SNES could generate the 1.21 gigawatts necessary to power the game

There's that word again! Heavy, what's so heavy about the future? Is there something wrong with the Earth's gravitational pull?
Working Girl: The Video Game would have some great music.
the real question is, where is any version of Big Trouble in Little China? all's I ever wanted was to play as Jack Burton...Who? Jack Burton...Me!

There was a terrible Commodore 64 game based on it, but I agree, a solid 16-bit style beat-em-up would be amazing. Three playable characters: Jack, Wang and Egg, and each level has the three Storms as an end level boss, with the final boss being Lo Pan, of course. I'd play that.
The art style might actually have been what killed its chances of getting a western release. Now I'm just guessing here, but some companies are very protective of their IPs, and how they are portrayed, and if you stray too much from their view of what their IP should look & feel like, then they might stop you from releasing a game (or toys or anything else for that matter) based on it. Often when game companies get the rights to a licence, there are a lot of do's and don'ts attached to that, like Batman won't shoot anyone, or Mickey Mouse wears this hue of red on his pants, or this is the accent a space Ork speaks. And the rights holders to Back to the Future might well have figured that this was too different from their version of Back to the Future, and thus made it so that they could not release it here. Again, I'm just guessing here, but it would not surprise me if it was the case.

That's a pretty solid hunch. At that time in the US most people wouldn't be ready for that, or even understand why the art style looked like that.

I mean, they made an animated series with a somewhat similar art style so, im not too sure about that.

Art styles are seldom a reason not to release games. Adjusting sprites was an easy task even back in the day, and would have been a pretty inexpensive way to bring over a game. It's far more likely it was simply a licensing issue.

This is the best Back To The Future gama of all time. I was lucky to find an english translated reproduced copy off of Amazon 5 years ago.
Great vid man! I didn't know this game existed! It's a bit pricey tho.. It'll be definitely on my radar now
thanks for reminding me of conkers high rule tail i was following the progress for long but then didn't found a shred of it
It's Marty on a hoverboard. That's all I need to know 😁
Having played the NES "Back to the Future II & III" game, this looks like a lot more fun!
another great review!
Why won't he stop staring at me!?! His eyes are burning into my soul!
Beautiful theme Back to the future
I get slowdowns at times trying to play this game, is it cause I’m using a GameGenie on an SNES or does this game just have dropped frames at times?
Super Metroid for the Super Famicom was also English friendly. It had a language selection in it that allows for English or Japanese, and it's a lot cheaper to get these days than the SNES version.

It's the exact same game on the cartridge.
Looks good enough. And that tune...... Rules!
LJN ruined many childhoods.
beautiful pixelart imo
you all are very entertaining.
...was this the same folks who made the SNES tiny toons games? Cuz something about it reminds me of those.
Started playing a Repro of the English fan translation, it had some consistently really bad slow down. I feel like if the game could run at a constant frame-rate it would be much better. But the constant slowdowns whenever anything is happening makes it really hard.
Marty McFly's Pro Hoverboarder 2
Now I want a Back to the Future Anime...not like the animated series...an ACTUAL anime with all the tropes wrapped up in the BTTF world and lore.
The sprites look big and similar to the nightmare hunter leprechaun game
I love this game I picked it up at a game convention completely adapted for the American snes it's not particularly difficult but the lack of checkpoints does make it kind of a slog
3:02 spare no expense on those clouds huh?
Is there gonna be a review of either Bahamut Lagoon or ROmancing Saga 3 in the future? Since we know you're not fond of those games, would be cool to go in depth
Looks like JJ & Jeff on TG-16
I’m a HUGE Back to the Future fan and only grew up with the disappointing NES games. Though this game appears somewhat limited, it looks to be light years ahead of the NES titles. I just ordered a copy for my modded SNES (it’s as easy as opening the cartridge slot and nipping off a small piece of plastic). It’ll not only be a welcome addition to my SNES collection, but also a welcome addition to my Back to the Future memorabilia.
you are awesome!! pls do a video about the super nintendo accessories! (e.g. nintendo mouse, super scope, super advantage and more :) !!!
Those backwards controls sound like a deal-breaker to me

map your controller buttons the other way around in your emulator settings. Some, like retroarch, even allow you to make specific configuration files for particular games. I've used this trick to clean up a lot of games with "backwards controls" (unless you were planning on *actually* spending the 80-100 bucks for a real cart of this one, more for complete).
pretty surprised to see that this game doesn't have bad mocap-based sprites like all the other movie games of the era
This is heavy!
This game is awesome after the Nes games
Great scott.
unique graphics in this game
The game was alright but the problem that I have with it is the slowdown out of nowhere. Other than that it's not bad.
We need an open world (and open time) Back to the Future game.
I've noticed a lack of English friendly Japanese n64 videos. As in, I can't find any! Have you ever thought of doing some N64 reviews?

Trust me, you _don’t_ want to play the Japanese versions of Terms of Endearment or St. Elmo’s Fire. They suuucked, even the slightly “okay” PC Engine version of the latter was a piece of dogcrap. Blew my mind to see that Miyamoto himself did the Super Famicom version of Mannequin 2: On the Move, especially since Japan didn’t even get the first Mannequin (it was an unlicensed game)
Dear SNESDRUNK Could you please review Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run? it is a good standalone game to be honest but it is NOT Griffey presents MLB!
That is pretty sad that we never got this game over here. I never played any of the shitty back to the Future games that came out for the NES or genesis, but I'm sure back then I probably would have enjoyed this game if it came out over here.
well as long as were asking for 90's movie video game adaptations that'll never happen, when are we gonna get "Super Schindler's List 3D" ?!?! XD
B = Dash, Y = Jump. X = Dash, A = Jump. You can play with X and A pretending you are recreating Y and B and it gets A LOT more comfortable to play. Thank me later B)
This is Sonic The Hedgehog
Console Wars brought me here.
It's also stupid that LJN didn't publish this game in North America even though they published the NES and Genesis games (the latter by Arena) and thank goodness the crappier Master System games never made it States-side.
LJN doubly ruining something!?!? You don't say!
The #1 thing that this game has going to for it is that it was the best Back to the Future game until the 2010's Telltale Back to the Future game. Otherwise, it really is a mediocre side-scrolling platformer. I recommend playing with the English translation patch and save states.
It's so sad when a license have almost zero good game
I disagree with calling the art style “anime”. I feel like it’s actually incredibly well done charicature. That’s obviously splitting hairs, but I feel like the actors likenesses are captured in a way that generic “anime” wouldn’t even attempt.
A badly aninated version of Back to the Future? Isn't that called Rick and Morty?
There are good Back to the Future games. I will always recommend the Telltale games because they're the games that got me into Telltale games. RIP telltale :(
Yeah, of course LJN didn't want this game being released outside Japan. They didn't want anyone to play a Back to the Future game that's actually decent...
Save states.
Sssssssssssssssssssssssssnes drunk
like stated in the video, we can only speculate why old games came out the way they did, though that said, I dont think LJN was the reason this game never came out of japan, I think its more likely that this game made by a nobody developer was published by a gaming division of Toshiba just wasn't interested or didn't have the resources for a international release.
A very mediocre game who's value was super-inflated by the factor that supposedly doesn't exist in the retro game market!
Part 3 sucks
