Those back tailgate were famous for the bottoms to rot because the drain holes in the gate would fill with dirt and leaves and the rain water would fill the gate up and rot the bottom right out of it. If someone would of took the back apart and clean the bottom of it and cleared the drain holes it would still be in great shape.

As the second to the youngest of seven kids, I saw the 1970s from the back window of a 1972 Chrysler Cornet with the same seating, engine and 4 barrel carb. My mom was heavy on the accelerator and would do rolling burnouts at 35 mph! It had a lemon of a transmission, though. Always in the shop - it ended up being the kids' Field Car for bombing around the farm. Great memories.

Great job getting the wagon up and running. I loved the "tail gunner" rear seat in those old boats. I noticed the remnants of a Shaw AFB base sticker on the front bumper. I was stationed at Shaw in the late 60s (one of my least favorite assignments). There used to be a bar walking distance just outside a back gate on highway 441. A buddy of mine was walking home towards the gate late one night when a police car pulls up next to him lights flashing, siren, the whole works. My friends first response to the officer was, “How fast was I going?” The cop was not amused and gave him a ticket for walking on the wrong side of the street! Welcome to the Sumpter.

That said, I know that the wood grain on the flanks would look just as awesome - strictly up to you and the family. Especially intrigued to see what you are gonna do with the tailgate - all that metal-stitching is gonna be a chore, but seeing what you and your Dad fab up should be very interesting. I also look forward to your DIY door panels, as well as one of your patented deep-cleaning montages on that interior. Seriously, anyone who can even pick ONE of your projects from the last several years, and have the gall to call it a dud just needs to go away. I noticed that the car has an AM/FM stereo radio with 8- track player, electric rear window defroster, vent windows and many options. Those vent windows became optional in 1971 for the full-size Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth sedans and wagons.

They'll have these memories for a long time. I think you should keep this car, but first, pull the engine and give it a complete one over - bearings rings, etc. You could also inspect the wear on these items. When you put it back, I would see if you could swap out the carburetor for a fuel-injected system. Then you'll have a reliable daily runner. That's my two cents.

Great to see the family - moments you can never get back! I remember when wagons like this were new and SUV"s were not infecting our highways with their bloated and overpriced junk. I always liked those big Chrysler wagons. While my favorite wagon is a 1972 Ford LTD Country Squire, these were worth buying. I had a chance to work with my brother in law on a 1986 Lincoln Town Car that had been parked near the beach. None of the windows worked -after 1 can for each door of WD40, we had the windows working flawlessly. After vacuuming and spraying the moving parts and tracks, the windows came to life. Sometimes you just have to do like you did and be patient and work the systems back into shape. I love that original blue paint under the fake woodgrain! There is enough steel in that American iron to make 5 new Toyoduh Corollas! That thing runs amazing considering its history. Great job! Actually that wagon would look awesome with a darker color uppers and lowers and that light blue replacing the woodgrain. That could be a great tribute to American iron - not a restoration, but a re-invention!

It’s a high end furniture store, they have something similar on display that I believe they sell for $1500. They aren’t actual antiques, just made to look like they came out of that era. When i was about 9 years old my friends mom had a station wagon with the rear facing seats in the back. We used to have so much fun riding in the back. Im so glad i watched this video because i had actually forgot all about that until I watched this.

Old big block wagons are cool! You and your dad put out some fun content. The kids getting to help made the video. . Sometimes it is the little thing that make a older car cool, like peeling off the ugly old brown stuff.

Something I had the Helms Bakery truck driver show me when I was 15 years old working on my '50 chevy in the driveway. To remove the inner bearing and seal. After removing the outer bearing, put the nut back on and slide the drum down the spindle and yank at the end and the nut will remove the inner bearing and seal without any damage. Been doing that for over 60 years. Enjoy the show by the way!

Michael - there's no ways you're only 25! You've accomplished a lot! You've been a boat mechanic and had your own KZread show for maybe three years now. And have a great family. Most 25 year olds I know haven't done any of this stuff yet. well done

Sort the alternator, brakes and fuel tank/lines and I would definitely put the wood grain back in as it is the wood that defines the station wagon! Enjoying this one a lot.

this was the life in the 80s and for some of us in the 90s too, riding in the back of a wagon was just awesome even better if the back windows came down. Always had that weird feeling facing the rear driving forward as a kid.

I think it would look awesome if you color matched the original paint for the rest of the car and installed wood. Then again that may be a bit expensive. Up to you guys.

A fun video ! - the kids were essential for the road test - a family motor to enjoy. It’s certainly a notable vehicle from the mundane RV’s we have these days. It will look fantastic in the metallic blue only I think. In one colour you see the whole size of it. As an accessory John Candy would have been the perfect character to drive it, we miss his comedy. All the best, great video..❤

Love it! I grew up with station wagons with the extra rear seat so that my brother and sister and I wouldn’t fight. Amazing what some elbow grease can do for these cars you are rescuing. You guys are lucky that they don’t need to use salt on your roads, because brake fittings rarely come apart without a fight up in Canada and the brake lines would be toast. Keep up the excellent work and enthusiasm. Great seeing your kids enjoying working with you and their grandpa!

I remember those when I was a kid... They were the rig to have... Back in the 70's ppl bought these big block wagons to pull their rv's... The T & C wagons had all the bells & whistles... Not many survived because families drove em into the ground & off to the scrap yard they went... Your lucky to find a survivor...
