Forging of the Yakut blade, an obvious upgrade
The obvious modernization (improvement) of the national Yakut blade. Using sandwich lamination. It just occurred to me, I do not seem to have seen it (but I can and I'm wrong). On the concave side is steel W1-9, on convex ancient steel, which is more than 100 years old.

Shurap thanks for showing us all the technical details of these knife's!. There not like most knife's so making one means getting it wright l love the simplicity and the fact that people have used this fine implement for two thousands years witch brings to mind the old saying if it ant broke don't fix it!! Nice work!!
That is an excellent job of forging and grinding as always with your knives. You do beautiful work. That grind is reminiscent of the sushi and pruning knives. Thanks for sharing.
Shurap, you do outstanding work, enjoy watching a master do his thing!
5 years ago...it amazes the viewers to this day. Hopefully the war doesn't change your passion. I am sorry for what you all are going through. 😔
Man dude, I'm really digging your equipment! Those machines make it so much faster. 😁
Your work is well done. I have told many people about you and your fine work. May you be very successful always in all of your endeavors.

Beautiful work as always 👍. I loved the picture showing the cross section of the blade. It reminds me a bit of a Japanese kata-ha blade with an urasuki grind in the back. I'll bet it slices like a laser too!

Thank you for your videos. You are an artist. I wish we lived on the same continent so you can teach me. :)
That turned out amazing. You dont see very many yakut knives with modern steel with damascus.
beautiful as always. keep up the good work.
very cool knife. thanks for sharing it!
Excelente trabajo,una obra maestra,felicitaciones.

Plain simple and beautiful.
your work is amazing.
As a blacksmith my self i found Your channel genuinly interesting.
looks great! HGreetings from Germany, Edgar
The thumb nail picture was of two choppers and an adze or a bent scraper in the middle. I came here to see what that middle tool or device was for. But you showed us how to make a knife in the video.

if it's possible at some point you should secure your power hammer a bit more so it doesn't shake so bad, you'll get more oomph since your base won't shake. Just something I've picked up. Anyway keep up the great vids man :)
Did you stand on the backside of the grinder to avoid the blade from potential kickback or just the camera shot?
nice work.. i'd carry one and use it everyday.. Thanks
This is art.
Awesome blade
Would love to see you forge a curved harvest knife.
Very nice!
that's an amazing yakut, i like it
This must be the best blade for cutting onions and potatoes, they would not stick to the blade. This is how i would like my chefs knife, very nice!

Bonjour, chacune de vos vidéos m'impressionne !
How did you get that line in the blade with the etch? Was it hamon or Damascus?

@user-kw4ym8gr4b
@vladimirsalov8205
@sakha_aman

What is the difference between squeezing the metal and pounding it while you're drawing it out? Are both required?
@shurap

The difference is not, just when the billets are thicker work better on the press, and when the thin is better on the hammer.

This is the national historical "Yakut" blade knife, designed to work in the cold, for example, for cutting frozen meat, a national dish.
Awesome
Does that little bending give it more cuting power or durability? What is it's advantages?
@shurap
This is a national Yakut blade, intended for use in large frosts - strength. For cutting frozen food (meat) - it does not get stuck. Also with a tree. Also a specific sharpening (light). Saving of metal and reduction in weight with a certain strength. All very briefly.

Beqa Otarashvivli Can you translate from me to Dmitry (shurap)? I would like to aquire a blade from him.
@just-dl
Beqa - theres a forging benefit, too. forging the blade/edge tends to curve the whole blad. by reversing the curve, the forging process straightens it. this avoids the need to straighten the shaft, withouut undoing the freshly forged edge

Very nice looking blade, did you say it's an improvement because of the sandwiched steels you used or because you bent the blade to make the groove rather than forging it in?

Thank you, it's because of the use of sandwich steels.

Sorry for my newbie question, but... What's the difference between hammering and pressing the red hot steel? Why not just use the press? I mean, apart from when you're shaping the tip of the blade or curving it.
@hardcase1659

Forging by hand gives you better control and precision.
So what does it do different?
Nice forging, but no normalising cycle? And seems to be quenched at a too high temp. How is grain structure in it? They are very beautyful!
