I wish I knew the answer. Would this have worked if you used flux between the metal layers?

@@leeland3481 flux would hinder doing it like that since it would form a barrier between the layers rather then just the outside

I believe you would have to seal the whole billet up with some mild steel or whatever method you’d like, just as long as it is 100 percent sealed. That way you can get to that forge welding temp but the brass will melt but has no where to go essentially.

I feel that every KZread'er should have an epic failure video every now and then it proves to the new maker that nobody is perfect and we all fail at times

Yea we fail a lot. Most if not all of mine make it to video if there is enough content to make a video. I think it is an important thing to show. Thats why i watch Alec Steele

Hi , you need to seem weld your billets all the way around and remember your not forge welding when you use this method your actually brazing . your seem weld will need to be almost perfect , if there are any small holes in it your brass or copper is going to leek out . Be gentle with it dont be so hard on the press.Good luck mate. P.S. i really enjoyed the video , youll get there, dont give up.😊👍

I follow this blacksmith named Shurap, he made a Damascus copper knife with 2 different metals that normally don’t forge weld together all that well. How he was able to do it, he added salt, pepper and dried chilli peppers to it to create a carbon source. Maybe give that a try.

What materials did weld together?

Flux. Anytime I've seen this type of shenanigans they ad flux and surround it on all sides then sand off the outer steel. Also failure is far better than video's that just get it right in one try, thank you for walking us though the attempts. I really hope this helps someone else who's starting out.

I like to show the failures because it is kind of demoralizing when your learning and you cant get it right and all you see is everyone gets it in one shot. Rarely do we see the 3 failed billets before that one good billet. I cant wait to try again and hopefully not fail 😅

Its powdered high carbon steel. You can get it at most knife making supply websites. I get mine from Maritime Knife Supply. I find they have the best price with shipping accounted for for my area.

I have been trying the same thing, more or less. I have layered steel, copper, and brass in a canister sandwich. Your video showed it was too hot and I could see brass squirting out. I have had reasonable results maybe around 950-1000 and have 50/50 success of it bonding good and not delaminating. I will keep trying as the three metals good really awesome in a blade.

The first press was way too hot. I'm used to doing it with copper which has a higher melting point than brass. I found that out the hard way. I'm hoping it was just me rushing through since I had a deadline one getting the steel ready which I couldn't meet so I had to change plans. Hopefully ill get it next try around.

@@JPsBladeworks I hope your next one is good and you have a cool video maybe. I will try some more brass/copper/steel this spring as it is challenging but sure looks great when it does bond.

the dark powder that looks like gunpowder ... or what material it is ... I have seen that they put it together with the materials and then close it by welding the metal box

Thats steel powder made from different steels. Its either 1080 or 1080 with 2% or 4% nickel steel to make it mimick 15n20 steel.

Good effort, though. Definitely a good learning experience. Thanks for showing us the process.

I was looking into making a brass demascus knife and if it weren’t for this video I would have done the same thing as you and welded it way to hot. Thanks for showing me this so that I don’t have to copy your mistake.

I got too confident on my copper Damascus. Tried to make a way too big of a billet and had complete failure. Lost about 60$ worth of steel and 2 days work. So I feel for you. I haven’t tried brass yet, after watching your video I might wait. Lol.

Fortunately ive only lost like $30 of material. The core steel is still good. All i have to do is forge it flat and restack and its good as new. I will try again once i have more free time. For now i have to make the best knife i can in the 3 days i have left

Denis made one like this. Maybe check with him to see what he thinks? I’d like to try one of these next. I’m currently doing my 1200 layer random pattern damascus. This will be the highest layer count I’ve attempted

1200 layers is an intense number of layers. I have only gone up to 1000. Im going to have to give it a try sometime soon.

So i have zero experience. Im not a smith. I dont have a forge. I dont have welding gear. I went down a rabbit hole to get here, and what a ride. I want to tell you this is a super cool video. Have you succeeded at this attempt? Seriously very informative. My question. Would a canister damascus be a better idea?? Yes/no/why. Thanks

I have not tried it since and its been a year. I will probably try it again here in a month or two once my schedule opens up again. I think ill get it this time. I have gain a lot of experience in the last year. I dont think a canister would work because if i over heat it the brass will pool up at the bottom instead of evenly distribute. Its all about temp control which i did a poor job of that day.

I found that putting steel plates on all sides keeps the copper and brass inside bro

I was doing the build along challege hosted by red beard ops and a few other youtube channels. I ended up making a raindrop damascus knife instead but i was calling it close. Finished it last night at like 2am. Today was the deadline.

You should hit up Baker Forge and Tool. Them guys have patterns down pat. Do you think brazing the entire side of the billet keeping oxygen away would help? I don’t actually know. It’s just something I’ve seen other makers do

Hello young man never work copper or brass near their melting point, they will penetrate the parent material and create problems. Try and keep your working temp below critical 950C and below, it's harder to move the steel but less problems.

@@JPsBladeworks The Zinc in the brass is the biggest issue try your best to keep O2 well away from it.

I think the zink will make it delaminate every time. Your better off with pure copper.
