Forging a Key Rack Part 2

Part 2 of how I hand forge a key rack from 1/8" x 1-1/2" mild steel and #16 horseshoe nails. Project has Split work, punching, tapering, texturing, scrolls and riveting. Makes a good gift. You can find Part 1 at • Forging a Key Rack Part 1

I do really like this piece! Definately going to give it a shot. I don't have any source for horse nails around here, might have to see how it goes working with some 6mm round for the hooks. I am also experimenting with copper rivets for contrast on my coat rack, might try that on this as well if it comes up alright.

I have always liked the contrast between copper and mild steel. I order my horseshoe nails from Anvil Brand. I get them in a box of 100. I order 2 boxes at a time that way I always have some. Horseshoe nail hearts, Key Racks, Spice Spoons...there's always something to do with them.

Great project. Ive found that is much easier to draw out the end of the bar to a point and then split it. Then you know both are the same length and you dont have to draw them out individual. Basically half the amount of forging. Almost all tutorials ive seen show the way you did it. Not sure where I got the idea to do it the other way, but I find it way easier. Maybe there is a reason why not to do the way I am describing.

I have done it both ways, I find the draw it out then split it works best for me on narrower stock,1/8" x 1" or less. Thanks for bringing that method up.
