I've always wondered about stuff like this (how Smiths use spare bits). Be neat to see what else you guys can make. Sort of like a Scrapwood Challenge... Random thought... I wonder how Nickel Bronze alloy would work for a knife? (I was browsing through materials available in McMaster-Carr [it's addictive], and thought... Hmm, probably not as durable as 5160, but better than my chinesium Buck knife.)

Awesome hammer only down fall from using leather handle hammers (past exp) is your missing the pommel plate that is on all tools and knifes that are leather stack handles, the glue/epoxy will separate from the steel. Pommel plate gets pressed on and the end tang gets heated and riveted over. But the hammer is a beautiful skillful design as is everything you make 👍

As a framer, this makes for a very good carpenter framing hammer mix. But the claw is too curved for a typical framing hammer and the striking face is in a weird spot. It looks amazing, but some tweaks I’d make are a slightly thicker shaft, a wider and more straight on striking head, and a straighter claw. All in all great work, you’re doin more than I could ever😂

Love the channel and that's a cool hammer. QUICK QUESTION. I thought that one of the reasons for a leather ring handle is that the leather has some natural give to it making it a good grip. Isn't that lost if you add epoxy to the equation? I recently made a KABAR knife replica and used leather rings on my handle (I made a video of it on my channel if you curious). I just soaked the leather in neats foot oil and then compressed it on to the handle and pinned on the pommel. I like the slight sponginess of the leather handle. does the epoxy detract from that? Oh and I vote for one of those drills that has a pushable handle on it where the pushing down on the handle causes the spinning of the drill or bit driver...

  • @Earthenfist

You're exactly right and Alec just ruined the leather handle by epoxying it. He now just has a plastic/epoxy handle with a leather pattern in it, in essence.

What he did is fine. The epoxy is only going to be holding the layers together so very little will be touched and you still have the natural grain of the leather adding a lot of grip. Estwing goes and adds a layer of epoxy on the outside of the leather completely eliminating that. It also chips off as you use it and looks terrible after a short while. The one thing I would have done differently is to add a steel plate at the bottom and rivet it on to help keep the very last layers nice and tight over time.

@@thespaztagonist984 Most damascus is made with steel that can get equally hard, so it shouldn't be an issue at all. And most files aren't all that hard anyway. Some files are as low as 50 rockwell, which even mediocre (hardenable) steel can do easily. So files should be okay, especially if dedicated to only non ferrous metals, and rasps are no issue at all.

In ancient Rome or something, they made that kind of steel and you could see the pattern all the way through even without an acid etch. It is now a mystery how the steel was made. Maybe it was iron and steel forgewelded together. You should try that. Attempt#9

That hammer is beautiful. I was hoping it would go up for sale on the website...

As a carpenter I can say I never wanted to try a hammer as much as I do this one. It looks amazing so far.

an added bit of cross hatching would make that hammer head grip better as you make contact with the nail. I have swung an Estwing for many years framing and drying in Houses, and a slick face hammer makes it harder to do the job unless it is finishing where the hammer face being crosshatched would mar the work and require extra finishing as the hammerhead would mark every full driven nail

You need to make 50 more of these plug hammers, then make more hammer plug hammers from those hammer plugs of the hammer plug hammer.
