This strategy is definitely the way for a hacker like me. I've left the ego behind; * Stopped spraying the Mickleson-esque drives teed 4 inches off the ground, accepted that if I want to keep it in play, 170-200 yards is good. * Taken numerous 3-woods off the tees on holes where wind/camber is going to put my sliced driver in trouble. * Accepted that off the deck I cant consistently hit further than 150 yards and broken 250 yard approaches into two consistent 8/9/PW irons. * Done everything I can to leave my trusted 110 yard PW into the greens. * Finally broken 90. Bravo playa's!

Thanks for posting this video. I have a friend that has an insane short game. I’ve seen him shoot even par over 9 holes with 9 putts several times. My philosophy is have tight dispersion with your irons and know how far they go. If you do that and pick the right targets you’ll get your share of GIR, but if you miss you’ll have an easy up/down.

I have also been working on my practice putts by following Stimp Daddy's advice about holing a lot of 1 foot putts, then moving onto 2 footers, 3 footers and so on

You just have to avoid hitting it thin and it's actually a really forgiving shot...even hitting 2-3 inches behind the ball, the sole interacts with the turf more like a wood than an iron once that leading edge is out of the way. No divot or small divot, high flight but not a lot of spin. Try it.

At my local recycling centre, there's always a collection of old golf clubs. Mostly rubbish, the occasional good one. I buy one now and again. If it works i keep it, if not i drop it back next time i go. By works, i mean works for me. At our level, consistency and confidence are more important than a manufacturer's claim of an extra 4 yards distance. So far a 7 wood and a 52 degree wedge are in the bag. Can't even remember the brand. They cost £2 each. I've probably spent £10 on clubs I've returned. Next trip, I'll look out for a ladies' driver 🙂.

@@silvermediastudio I miss greens with my irons. Had a problem last year with my take away making me leave the ball out to the right a bit. If you play a tree lined course getting out of trouble and making a par is not a given. My biggest problem is lack of time and a place to practice. Always loved hitting my own balls off grass rather than range balls off a rock hard mat. After getting a wrist injury doing that and missing 11 weeks of golf I don't think I can commit to the shot when hitting off mats. That's my thoughts anyway.

Confident swings and conservative targets is the way to play good (and relaxing) golf. That said, there are very few times I’m playing and the correct conservative target is intentionally away from the green on my approach. The only times I’d ever consider something like that is if I’m outside of comfortable range and have a forced carry to the green or I have a terrible lie. Most of the time I’m aiming to the center of the green or to one half, or at the most extreme, one third of the green if I really need to avoid trouble - but almost never to a lay up zone unless I’ve put myself in a bad position off the tee. If you’re consistently aiming away from the green on approach shots due to calculated risks you need to play more forward tees.

I actually did this on 2 Par 3s on a golf course last month in that missing long was better than going in the bunker on both holes. Scored a bogey on both holes when usually I take a 6 or 7 because of trying to hit the green.

To be a scratch golfer you need to average 12 greens per round. The biggest key though is NEVER short siding yourself which means you always plan ahead to make sure if you miss your approach shot that you still have plenty of green to work with. That's the key to getting better at golf...that and spending 80% of your time working on short game.

  • @chubs7182

Matt - curious what your advice would be for practicing without being able to practice short game or on grass. I'm a low 80s shooter, and everywhere around me is only mat driving ranges and no short game practice areas. Hitting off a mat and not being able to practice short game is killing my ability to consistently strike the ball better (turf interaction) and practice 100 yards & in. Getting up and down is a lot more terrifying for me than getting the ball in play.

GIR and skill level is highly correlated but GIR does not CAUSE lower scores. Data is important IF you can parse it to do something actionable. HiT MoRe GrEeNs is holy unhelpful. Yeah bun, that's what I try to do all DAY

Injured it badly in December when i missed a rerack on the over head press. Couldn’t twist my wrist, pick up things or push things with my forearm. Horrible. Took a lot of banned substances to be healed within 2-3 months instead of 6

Be like Seve, learn to get up and down out of a garbage can. Or, just learn to hit your misses in good spots so you can get the easy up and down. Everybody misses greens. The better players get up and down.

If the world was a fair place Matty Boom-Boom would have twice the subscribers of Rick Schiels. Clearly better content, must have more to do with his accent and silly golf vernacular, that is some confidential AF inside info. On another note.....what kind of ball are you putting with? Looks like a dirty egg yolk. Great video as always.

The theory is a bit misleading. You say a 10 handicap hits only "two more greens than a 20 handicap but going from four to six is a 50 percent increase in greens in regulation. A 50 percent increase or decrease in any aspect of golf is substantial; 50 percent more putts made, 50 percent more fairways hit, etc. A 50 percent increase in driver distance, for example, would take a 200-yard carry all the way to a 300-yard carry, Yes, manage the misses, but don't disregard 50 percent more greens in regulation

Percentage change and absolute values are very different concepts. It should be obvious but it appears to have escaped you. This misuse of percentages is a common propagandizing technique. To show percentages without the absolute numbers and the reality of how to get to those changes is dishonest. Or are you just trolling? Can be confusing with this level of stupid whether you are trying to sound smart and failing, or genuinely joking. Extremely midwit

honestly i think the difference between a high and mid handicapper is lack of penalty strokes. Your methods should help with that anyway.

Penalties Picking wrong target for shot shape Pin hunting without the skills (even pros dont pin hunt) Ignoring short game because everyone tells them hitting longer equals lower scores - 1 out of 10 up and downs because of bad aiming and no short game skills 3 putts
