Forest Stand Improvement With Dr. Craig Harper LIVE SEMINAR | PART 3

Ойын-сауық

Part 3 of our live seminar with Dr. Craig Harper on Forest Stand Improvement!
In this three part series, Dr. Craig Harper breaks down how to manage a stand of woods for better habitat and forage, specifically for whitetail deer. Most land managers tend to focus on what they can do in their fields for deer and other wildlife, things like, planting food plots, trees, leaving standing grain, putting in CRP among other things. But, what if we told you your timber stand can produce almost as much tonnage per acre as a soybean food plot, while improving the cover? Well it can! And the best part is, it's essentially free! Just a little bit of planning and sweat equity and you can drastically improve the woods on your property!

I like the comment that the land should aesthetically feel good in addition to being productive for deer. I agree, it should also be enjoyable to be there

Really enjoy this kind of content!! Owned over 100 acres for the last 20 years and my only regret is that I only started TSI 2 years ago. I enjoy my days with my trusty small Echo, Hatchet and squirt bottles!

GREATLY enjoying the forest stand improvement series with Dr. Harper! Maybe just me, but can't help but wonder how close his hometown might be to Mt. Airy, NC, the hometown of Andy Griffith? Don't know that I've heard someone with such an identical accent, and absolutely zero dissrespect intended with the observation, as I'm a native Carolinian myself (South Carolina in my case).

We're glad people are enjoying the series! We have some more FSI content with Dr. Harper coming up in the next few months! No disrespect taken at all! Very unique accent for sure!

Would love if dr. Harper had time to make an educational tree identification video. I’m terrible at it

A simple plant id guide would be super helpful too! Dr. Harper has written a few of them. We also some more FSI videos with Dr. Harper coming up and he goes into more detail on identifying specific trees.

I have a few instances in my woods where there's clusters of trees. Same species, that grew up around the same time as saplings, now grown ranging from 3.5"-5" diameter even up to 10" tree diameter clusters. Is there any special recommendations for those when improving the stand or just go by crown size, canopy, etc?

Are they a desirable species of tree? Also depends on your objective for the stand. Are you trying to increase forage or cover or both?
