Forest of Death. Hiking 16 km in this very special German WW2 forest.

Forest of Death. Where thousands of Germans tried to escape the Red Army in April 1945. Very few came out alive..

I listened to an account of a WW2 German panther commander who was describing that retreat. The soviets had already captured that autobahn and were entering Berlin. I can't remember the author's name or book, but the journey sounded truly terrifying. The description of carnage, dread, fear, determination, destruction etc... was shocking and spellbinding. The Germans were fighting back, but Soviets had overwhelming numbers. I think the majority of German military and civilians did not make it to the Elbe river. I wish I could remember the web site. It was one of those WW2 stories channels, with an AI voice dictating a book. maybe it was Eberhard Baumgart "The battle of Halbe 1945" Thanks for your trip down that lane, definitely peaceful compared to the above. There must be thousands buried there.

KZread "we must surrender to the americans" it is part one of 6 parts. The Playlist can be found in pinned comment of that video. That is what you are talking about. It is the diary of a panther commander, and a ragtag army of survivors during the escape of The Battle of Halbe.

Yes, I listened to that video as well. Simply horrifying but still one the best war videos I have listened to. It certainly describes the true terror of war and should never be repeated but sadly it appears we haven't learned. Even though I'm American I found myself cheering for the Germans to make it to the American front which some did.

I’m always conflicted by such events. The German population didn’t deserve this , but the same time war always demands revenge and we all know the terrors that were visited on Eastern Europe and the Western Soviet Union from 1940 onwards.

Its true, there are still a lot of relics left there. But thats nothing compared to Halbe right after the reunification of Germany. I heard stories of diggers who were there back then. I could compose an essay, but shall restrict to point form. 1) Thank you for your energy and effort, for your empathy and respect, and for caring. 2) you aptly describe what for most people are the unimaginable horrors that arise from war. I believe that the majority of the general population haven’t the slightest notion of the fine balancing act of “treading the tightrope” that we call “our lives”. 3) That forest likely littered with personal effects/ artefacts, and wreckage of ordnances but also with physical skeletons, for me it “feels” full of ghosts. Every artefact is associated with a “real person” from the past 4) We need to keep memories like these alive, to hopefully try learning from our past, and to respect all the victims of conflicts 5) Never forget

This video doesn't have well-preserved, extensive bunker systems, big guns remaining in their emplacements, or other such things. And yet it may be one of the most interesting and important of your presentations yet. It gives us a view of that particular moment in the history of World War II that is filled with tragedy and ill-fated humanity. This is brought home through the photographs of destruction that contrast with the forest today, which is remarkably similar. And that walk must have been quite the effort lol. Certainly you and EE must be extraordinarily fit by now haha. Thank you for bringing this to us. I'd read about this period, but your video has brought it into stark reality, which is what you do best, in my opinion. All the best to you and EE!

Being a civilian and walking down this road and being shower with artillery shells had to be horrifying. One day you’re in your home or village enjoying life and the next fleeing your home to save your life. They must have done a lot of cleaning up on this road. I can understand still finding some artifacts still laying around but was imagining seeing parts of vehicles like wheels, tires, engine blocks and body parts. That sixteen kilometers must have seemed like sixteen thousand kilometers to the families that were fleeing. Very educational video.

Thanks HH & EE, thanks for showing us this one. Just like the way you guys filmed this one, walking, chatting, finding the odd artifact. The way you described it all made me want to look up some videos on the 9th army and their situation at the time and the bigger picture of what was happening. Nothing good happening for anyone at that time in that area! Take care guys 👍

One would think that mankind would learn from past history. Apparently not, seeing what is going on to this day. I can't even begin to imagine how frightening or the tragedy that took place in that forest. 😪We must not forget the lives that were lost. This place certainly holds many secrets. EE you are so very full of compasion like your father deciding to make that 16 km trek. So much empathy and understanding for a young boy. I do have an understanding as to why you would want to visit that historical site. Of course, they were many stories of heroism and bravery amongst the German soldiers. They were only human after all. It definitely puts things into prespective and to be appreciative of what one has. No, you certainly don't want to be in the forest during hunting season. Surprised that there were still so many artifacts there from that time period. It sure brings out many emotions, Thank you for all of your research, EE. 💞

I wish they would have put some of those artifacts in a war museum as a memorial for those who lost their lives. The road from hell destination really unknown. I hope they were treated with compassion from the allies who received them. You finally got your wish EE and you were successful in walking the 16 kms. Good for you. You should be proud. I got this off Wikipedia as an idea of the butchers bill that Busse's 9th Army suffered attempting to meet up with Wenck's 12th Army to the west of Berlin on the Elbe. Here are the casualties during this intense battle: Killed: Approximately 30,000 German soldiers lost their lives. Escaped: Around 25,000 managed to escape the encirclement. Civilians: Sadly, 10,000 civilians were killed. Missing or Killed: An additional 20,000 were either killed or went missing. The Spree forest has many ghosts. Thanks for the walk and talk HH.
