Foreigner Reacts to FILIPINO UNIVERSITY! University of Santo Tomas (UST)!

I head over to one of the Philippines' most prestigious universities: the University of Santo Tomas (UST). I explore its beautiful campus and compare it to some of the universities I've attended. The university has an exceptionally rich history, and it was awesome learning a bit about it.

The Main Building where you talked to the security guard is earthquake proof. You should have seen the museum inside that building. The chairs used by visiting Popes are exhibited there. Every time a Pope visits the Philippines, He always visits UST. On the other hand, the mini park your mentioned is called the Rosarium where the mysteries of the Holy Rosary are each represented by those pillars. Now, since it is a Catholic university, every 12noon and 6PM, the Angelus is being recited as the church bells ring. Everyone stops while saying the Angelus prayer. There is also the 3 O'Clock Habit where the Divine Mercy prayer is recited by everyone. You missed visiting the UST Chapel, the UST Central Library, UST Central Laboratory, the UST Seminary, the swimming pool, the printing press, the UST Graduate School, the Research Center, the Quadricentennial Pavilion where our modern basketball arena is housed as well as other sports rooms. Also, the Beato building where the UST College of Architecture and College of Fine Arts and Design are located. 4 out of 6 National Artists for Architecture are all UST Graduates/Thomasians. Across the campus, along Espana boulevard, the UST Senior High School 22 storey building is being constructed to accomodate the huge volume of senior high school students then a private bridge will connect it to the main campus. Visit the campus at night and see the beautiful lights. By the way, the university is named after St. Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican priest, the Patron Saint of all Catholic Schools.

Central Library - you'll need permission, ID and minimal fee to get a visitor's ID. If you love the feeling of being on a library filled with old books and using a traditional way of looking for books, then you definitely need to see the CL. Well, there are computers at the ground where you can do your initial search but that was lowtech before I graduated. Anyway, a whole day is not enough to appreciate all 6 floors (if I remember it correctly). Museum - this is the tricky part, there's only a day and time that it is open, but calling their office or going through information first wouldn't hurt. Trust me, the well preserved genetically mutated and deformed species there are worth seeing. Relic - yes, just like the relic of DLSU, but I think during special occasions only. It is placed on a somewhat secret place (I've only been there once so I can't even recall now how we got there during our freshmen tour). But of course, calling the office and information is always the key 😊 I'm not sure how much of these have changed and if all of what I have mentioned are still intact or if it is still there. But really worth your time visiting if they still are.

You also visited the campus during the 2nd semester where most of the students are already wearing their Typ B uniforms. Type A is the formal one, worn during the first semester 'til before Ash Wednesday. Then after that, it's Type B so students are more comfortable during the summer season. You can distinguish the different colleges including junior and senior high thru their uniforms.

UST was not the reason why the main road in front of the campus was named "España Boulevard" since the former owners were Spaniards (Alfredo Chicote, a Lawyer and Antonio De La Riva, a Spanish businessman), they bought the land from the Santa Clara Nuns. and when the American Colonial tried to get a portion of their lot to have an access to the present day QC area. The owners had one condition, the road should be named after their mother country which is Spain. The name was officially given on March 7, 1917 through city ordinance 366. This is why Quezon Boulevard ends in Morayta and resumes as Quezon Avenue at Mabuhay Rotunda. Actually, in 1952, the Manila City Government tried to change the name of the street to Quezon Boulevard but an heir of De La Riva notified the local government through the Department of Justice that its part of the condition of the donation. And, UST's campus size was not supposed to be 10x bigger and theirs no eminent domain happened, before it was donated to the Dominicans in July 18, 1911. The lot was already divided since it was already Rizal Park Subdivision. Thats the reason why most of the streets within were connected in the life of Jose Rizal and the family members of De La Riva and Chicote). It was only 21.5 hectares (not bigger than that). The property was bounded by the streets of España, P. Noval, Dapitan and Forbes. The original plan of the Dominicans was to put up two new campuses forthe University of Santo Tomas and Colegio De San Juan De Letran. But for some reason, Letran was removed and it became the sole campus for UST Source: In Transition: The University of Santo Tomas During the American Colonial Period by Prof. Jose Victor Torres. Wow you also did UST, my elder sister's alumni! UST (co-ed) and PWU (used to be girls only) are my two favourites; I must admit had once a magical all day cultural festival on UST ground after watching my sister on stage for their singing group contests held in their theatre; that day was one of my fondest memories. UST and PWU are amongst the few to have uniforms up to university. For some reason, I love the rich histories and formalilties of these two schools, but I would have love it even more if PWU stayed to its unique identity as girl's only university (disappointed to learn just now that it became a co-ed; sorry, I've been gone for a long long time and haven't returned, but that will change soon.) 4:00 PM Apr 24, 2020 Toronto

The original location of UST was in Intramuros but was transferred. To appreciate Manila more (specially Old Manila, you need to understand its past. Manila was once know as "pearl of the orient" and "paris of asia" due to its beautiful architecture. Until 1945 when it was devastated by war. It was the second most devastated city after Warsaw in Poland. But unlike Warsaw, Manila was never revived to its former glory. To have a glimpse of the past, try visiting a facebook page called "Bring Back The Old Beauty of Manila" and try too look at the pinned post which is a compilation of photos showing why it was once the envy of the far east. I would even go far to say that Manila would rival Tokyo and Bangkok in terms of cultural built heritage if not for the war. Aside from UST being the oldest university in Asia and even north America (older than harvard), it had the first suspension bridge (like the golden gate bridge, but not as glamorous) in Asia, first to implement a Tranvia public transport, public education system as ordered by Queen Isabel II of Spain, and more. Basically, Manila was lagging behind Europe, but often is first in Asia on some aspects. Such pride and glory is now being marred by rampant corruption and poverty, but most importantly, the lack of appreciation by a typical Filipino to our culture, history, and heritage. Unfortunately, the only thing that makes me love Manila is the hope that Filipinos (specially Manileños) can once bring it back to its former glory. From the 7 churches of intramuros, to the american art decos of escolta.

President Marcos wanted to build Manila (and the Philippines) back to its former glory. That was why he built so many infrastructures during his time, that even now are still standing, and no other presidents can beat him to all the infrastructures that he built, which mostly were the FIRST IN ASIA when they were constructed/made. He wrote many books and one is about the real history of the Filipino people which spanned the 250 years of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trades from 1565 to 1815 under the Spanish Empire, and his book was titled "TADHANA: HISTORY OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE (1565-1815)" published in 1979. www.goodreads.com/book/show/1987860.Tadhana

I’m currently a student at UST and here are some facts about the university: The statue at the last part was Miguel de Benavides who was the founder of UST. The Miguel de Benavides Library (named after him) is older than the university itself. Every Angelus (prayer every 6am, 12pm, 6pm) the students, faculty, and workers would all stop whatever they may be doing and pray, thus living up to the “Catholic University” status. The “mini park” that you passed through is the UST Rosarium. The pillars signifies the beads of the Holy Rosary. There is a tradition in UST freshmen to enter the Arch of the Centuries (the arch at the very front) during the Welcome Walk festivities on the very beginning of the school year and exit it before you graduate. It is said that once you exit the arch when you are not yet due, you will get “debarred” (fail/will not be able to graduate) and the entire student body respects this belief. Thanks for visiting UST!☺️💕

Justin Justin they respect the belief meaning they follow the tradition and respect it. If you dont abide the “rules” they wouldn’t do anything, just pray that you will be able to graduate lol

But actually a lot of people said or confessed, that they got disbarred because of crossing the arch even though it is not their time yet. They couldn’t explain why but ever since they cross the bridge, it all went downhill from there. Some graduated, however, they experienced a lot of difficulties that almost hindered them from graduating. Those were the lucky ones.
