Changing the oil in the steering box and removing a spacer plate

Well this is a timely video. It's on my job list today to change the oil in the steering box of my Super Dexta. According to the log book it hasn't been changed since 14 February 1969, so it's starting to get to the point where it's a bit overdue. Very handy to see how it all works before I work on it myself...

Hi I have a dexta the same as yours it has the same front end loader as well. Jimmy across the rd from you replaced the top bearing under steering wheel about 5 years ago. It has never been that easy to steer. That was before the front end loader was installed and now it is just hard to steer. Haven't tried to remove or replace shims in the bottom of steering box as yet. To add oil to stering box, I have been undoing nut on top of steering wheel and putting oil down steering shaft. Still has quite a bit of play in steering. I have taken out the small grub screw to oil the top bearings under the steering wheel. In your videos, yours appears to be alot easier to steer than mine. Any ideas.

Hi, thanks for your comment. It really is a small world. Firstly, I would pull the side off the steering box to check that the oil is actually getting in there from the top. From that point, assuming your front steering pinions and ball joints are well greased, you may need to add a thin plate/shim on the side of the steering box (in this video I was removing a plate to make my steering firmer). The only time my steering has ever been "hard" has been when my steering pinions needed greasing and I didn't have enough plates/shims on my steering box. Hopefully this helps! Let me know how you get on.

My dexta s steer is very hard Why do you think so

It could be a number of things. You may need to add in extra plates (opposite to what I was doing in this video), or maybe something happening in the upper unit. From my own experience, when I didn't have enough plates in the bottom, my steering was hard. Good luck!
