Took me a bit of puzzling to change the battery in my Transit too. They had in issue with one version over here that had two batteries under the seat. The drivers would smell an "eggy smell" just before one of the batteries exploded and blew acid out in all directions under the seat.

Up North, batteries usually die during the winter. In Texas, my car batteries always die during the summer.

He probably has a ton of extra devices plugged into aux power connections like battery chargers, which are high current draw. That is extremely hard on non-deep cycle lead acid batteries. Hopefully the new battery is rate for high draw rates or he'll be doing this again in two years or less.

FWIW mine has the pair of AGM batteries under there. Tight tight tight. So yours actually seems easier than the ones in my '20. The pair of alternators helps keep them charged up so far. And yes the twin turbo in this van moves the van pretty well up to when the noise from the axle/driveshaft at 74 drones you right out of the vehicle.

For us service guys there is no worst thing that to do work without our service vehecles!

Tilt cabs such as the Isuzu LCF, and conventional cab with all the engine accessible such as Silverado 3500 with a Knapheid plumbers palace body are best for maintenance. The Nissan NV is a unique combination with attributes like the old pickup based panel trucks but with a van body. To pull the engine on a 96-21 Chevrolet Express you have to take it up and out though the back of the van or lift the body off the frame. Some work on Ford diesel conventional cabs requires removing the cab. Nuts.

Make sure you or the dealer resets the battery management system. The software determines amount of charge based on battery type and age. FYI

Just got a 2018 GMC 3/4 ton. I was looking at the Transit also. Generally the input I got was that they won't make 300k, 150k they'll be done. Going to be interesting to see how you do. You're asking a lot from a 1/2 ton anything. Good luck.

I have a fleet customer that has 2 Transits, with over 400,000 miles on both

please tell me they put jump lugs under the hood that would be a pain if they didn't

Might replace my battery in my car soon too. Thinking of upgrading to AGM from lead-acid.

Don't use the expensive optima brand. They used to be great but now they're made in Mexico and suck.

My transit 250 mid roof has same battery location. My 2016 is on its 3rd battery

Just got aagm battery for my car. But still got green dry matter on plus post. Might be alternator!

our battery is above the front Tire, so we have to take the tire off pull the wheel well out , once you do that then brace etc.. So to keep it short Its a REAL Pain in the A** and on the another hand Happy New Year to ya Sir.. & will see ya on the Next 1

Yeah I’m just going to come out and say it GM has the better design in this one with the Full size Express Vans. At least in the express they’re under the hood.

It seems like the engineers at Ford went to the Apple design school. Make repairs that were simple to do in the old days so difficult that people will not want to repair things themselves.

it was an attempt to keep them from severe temp swings of under hood in very hot climates and very cold locations, anywhere inside the vehicle is better than underhood/in front fenders skirts(looking at you chrysler!!!!)

Only couple years out of battery. That's terrible. I have a fl,80 freightliner for service truck. Has three group 31 truck batteries in it. We did a major solar project back in 2014 we charged tool batteries all day long. By the time the day was over they barely stated the 8.3 cumins did this for two weeks. Had to go 30 miles to motel so got a little charge time morning and night. I figured by fall they would be junk lol. Got ten full years out of those batteries. One failed I the summer of the tenth year so unhooked it. Ran the test of the summer and put in new ones. The other two are now in forklifts

We got one at work caught fire many times battery shorted under seat couple dash fires so on drive shaft fell out had rubber couplings you have to change ever 20000 found out there was a recall they would drill a hole in the floor by drivers seat to allow water to drain out main power wire shorted and welded it’s self to the floor list goes on air bag module failed at one year old it’s by park brake lever van would radomly shut off hazard lights come on power doors keep trying to unlock it’s all control by that computer for in a accident we got two gmc vans now to replace that one thank god

I have a transit 250. I believe the battery is under the hood.

When I worked service for an electric company, they got me a transit too. I had the Transit 250 it had the regular V6 not ecoboost and that thing was a dog on hills. A friend told me that the 150 is a 1/2 ton, 250 is a 3/4 ton and the 350 is a 1 ton. Anyway, I wanted to wire it with emergency lights and to get power to the flashing module I had to get it from the battery. What a pisser it was. You would think Ford could build a battery tray that slides out from the front.

there should be a "boost/jump start post under hood and I think always on accessory power(underhood fuse box, if low power devices under 30 amps total) which you could have came off of ;)

Well that's not the first time I've seen a battery in the inside of the vehicle. Cadillac did the same with the Devilles back in the early 2000s. The battery was under the back sit.

but the batteries in the Devilles and Auroras are FAR easier to change than this atrocity, i currently own an 04 Deville and an 03 Aurora

If it was under the hood you would have to pull the motor out to change the battery.

I worked at car dealerships for years. The techs were totally trustworthy. Just my experience.

Modern car design - make the service parts almost impossible to change out by yourself, so the dealerships can charge $200 to do it for you. Or require a 'special tool' to do the job, like the VW Beetle (newest model) that you could NOT change the headlight bulbs without going to them!

Next time,install a Deka,they are the best battery you can buy!

I had a Deka in my honda for 10 years and it finally died after it was dragging down for a week. I noticed it was cranking slower and slower but just ignored it until it left us stranded one day when we went out to eat.

That's a pain but my neighbor had a Chrysler that the front tire and fender liner had to come off!!!

There whole idea is that the battery would last longer inside the car i.e. trunk, under seat, or any place out of weather, so the people who don't work on them said yea good spot under you butt or in trunk since maintenance free battery are the normal now so I always said if engineers worked on anything they designed they would never design another product that way but 10lbs of crap in a 5lb bag is there specialty.....

Pretty much everybody is buying Transits now . I have 2019 . They seem like they aren’t built for carrying heavy loads like the old Econolines. I have an Escape as a personal vehicle and the interior and dash are almost identical. It’s like they took an Escape and put a van body on it.

chock full of JUNKtronics and a work van as such, people tend to use multiple chargers for phones and tool batteries while they're shut off, which really eats battery life using the reserve capacity, plus they may make a bunch of short trips which never charge the battery back to full. cigarette smokers and others whom take their short breaks also tend to run them for heat and whatnot. all the above eats batteries up

here is a free tip i took mine bought a 20 dollar battery box and mounted behind seat .your welcome

ask your co 2 pay electric bill at home joe then charge overnight

fire the government and EPA ;) they forced it, that and greed + stooge engineering by collegiate sheeple degrees with zero hands on field knowledge. ship them all into the repair field for minimum two years before being allowed to deign anything ;)

What a pain in the ---. One more reason I haven't owned a Ford since 2005. Water heaters one day, Transit batteries the next.

That design by Ford for the batteries is absolutely the most ridiculous, tedious, nonsensical placement.

This is just one of many poor engineering designs that the Ford Motor company put into the Transit. There are more.
