Ford Tourneo Courier 2019 the practical alternative to an SUV

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Sometimes, something simpler is more sensible. Take the turn of the century trend to create small People Carriers with bespoke car-like design. All you actually need as a starting point for such a vehicle is a small van. And if you agree and happen to be looking for a very compact MPV, you might be interested in this one, the Ford Tourneo Courier.
Background
Back in 2014, Ford launched its smallest-ever van, the Transit Courier. It was a design able to provide a perfect base for the creation of a supermini-sized People Carrier, but that option wasn't initially taken up because the Blue Oval brand already had one of those in its range, the Fiesta-based B-MAX. That car, launched in 2012 and notable for a clever design that completely dispensed with a central B-pillar, was ultimately a casualty of the market's fashion-led switch away from MPVs to SUVs and was quietly deleted in 2018.
Rather than replace it with something else styled from scratch, thoughts at Ford's design department turned back to the Transit Courier and its suitability as a base for a little People Carrier. Which is why we've got this car, the Tourneo Courier, launched in mid-2018 as part of a rejuvenated range of van-based Ford Tourneo People Movers. Despite the LCV underpinnings, there's no lack of sophistication here. Especially under the bonnet where family buyers choose between Ford's latest 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel or a 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine enhanced with cylinder deactivation.
Driving Experience
It's always quite refreshing to drive a car whose only purpose in life is to get from A to B as affordably as possible. So there are no pretensions here - no dynamic expectations that might be disappointed. The underpinnings are derived from the old sixth generation Fiesta but the engines are borrowed from the current one, which means that Tourneo Courier buyers choose either a 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel unit or the 1.0-litre three cylinder EcoBoost powerplant I tried. Both engines put out 100PS and must be mated to a freshly-designed 6-speed manual gearbox. The EcoBoost variant I tested will be the choice of most, who'll approve of the fact that this unit's efficiency has been enhanced by the additional of cylinder deactivation.
Ride quality over broken surfaces isn't as smooth as I'd like, but things settle down at highway speeds. At that point, the petrol engine's buzzy thrum subsides a little too, though you do still get quite a lot of wind and road noise from the boxy shape and the high profile tyres. As you'd expect from a car with such an expansive glass area, this MPV is simplicity itself to manoeuvre. The boxy shape makes it easy to see where the corners of the car are, the wide door mirrors are a commercial carry-over you'll be glad of and the expansive windscreen gives you a far wider field of vision than you'd get in a supermini. In fact, a Tourneo Courier delivers far more of a lot of things than you'd get in a supermini, but that won't prevent it from being a relatively rare sight on our roads.
Design and Build
This Tourneo Courier delivers honest van-derived design with refreshingly frank simplicity. The main visual change in recent times has been this revised front grille. Otherwise, the main thing of note here is just how much cabin space Ford has been able to fit into a car with a supermini-sized roadway footprint.
And behind the wheel? Well this may be Ford's smallest MPV but you wouldn't think that from a seat inside. The perception of airiness is helped by the vast amount of headroom - and by superb all-round vision with an expansive windscreen that stretches high above your field of vision. Everything falls to hand easily and the centre stack now looks much more up to date than it did when the Courier was first launched, with the option of the brand's latest 'SYNC 3' infotainment technology. In the rear, accessed via sliding doors, you'd be tempted to say that there's just as much room as you'd get in the far pricier Tourneo Connect model. That airy roof height certainly makes it feel like that. In the boot, there's 708-litres of capacity. And if you need more, the 60-40-split rear bench pushes forward in two stages, up as much as 1,656-litres of space.

A very thourough review indeed! After looking around for a family car to replace my 2011 Focus estate, I realized I couldn't stretch my budget and settled on downgrading. Test drove Fiesta, Ibiza, Rio, Swift, C3, Micra, and still, all these options were around 17000€ and far from providing enough room for 5 adults and some luggage. Had a look at the Tourneo Courier in top trim level and after a short test drive I thought that all the other options no longer had reasons to be considered. It is a good enough drive, reasonably refined up to a point, has a pleasantly designed interior and has acres of space inside. All this for 14000€ is impossible to ignore, even for a car petrolhead like myself.

I own previous 2014 model in titanium spec and it does have steering wheel reach adjustment. Also, it has full spare wheel under the boot floor mounted from under the car. There is a bolt in the boot which can lower the spare wheel to the ground

I have owned a Ford Tourneo Courier for 3 months and am very happy with it so far. Here in Belgium it is 30% cheaper than a Ford C-Max and almost exactly the same size (the Courier is a bit shorter but also taller). Plus it is 20% lighter than a C-Max which means you will get better performance with the same engine. The 100 HP EcoBoost petrol engine does a good job around town and also on the autobahn (my in-laws live in Germany) - where having 6 forward gears plus cruise control makes it a dream to drive. The visibility is amazing and it's also easy to park. Basically this is an extremely practical family car which gives you more interior space than most SUVs with the fuel consumption of a small car. Rubbish name though!

I bought it (used) and I'm in love. While weighing up pros and cons I found it difficult to come across any opinions concerning the capability of the vehicle to 'swallow' bikes, so I will share my experiences, as it was a very important factor for me. I was afraid I was not going to load two bikes into the boot, but I was very wrong. Two 27,5 bikes go in without the front wheels easy peasy with loads of camping stuff (back row tumbled down). My 29er goes in (S size though) with a single back seat in vertical position (bike diagonally, no front wheel). I haven't tried putting it in with the back row tumbled, but I bet there's a chance of loading two 29ers, although they can't be too long and it might be necessary to put them a bit diagonally. The stability definitely won't be perfect and some measurements must be taken to protect the seats from damage caused by chainrings pressing against them. Finally, I am still to treat the car to my road bike, but having seen on the internet some pics of Tourneo swallowing whole road bike with the front wheel assembled, I'm quite sure to hear the burping sound from my Courier too. Basically, fu** it, maybe I'm not gonna race with Tourneo at traffic lights (I prefer to race on my bike), but it's a fantastic car at very good price. Miles better than my old 2003 C-Max and very pretty too. The only downside for bike enthusiasts will be that you cannot easily take the rear seats off , which would make it even more perfect for those needing to put more than one bike in. From what I saw, though, the bolts securing the back row can be unscrewed, so technically it can be done, though it definitely wouldn't be something you'd like to do very often.

@@leonfuturesoulmuzik875 Bloody hell, I think YT deleted my comment as I posted a link... Anyway, what I wrote is that I haven't had any major issues, I'm still happy with the car after a year and a half. It's 2017 model, bought at 65 000 km. The only think to beware of if you consider 1.0 ecoboost is small oil leakage caused by a faulty valve cover, which seems to be quite a common issue. I have this problem on mine engine too and I'm currently pondering whether to have it fixed. I was told by a mechanic, though, that I can monitor it rather than have replaced straight away. Type in 1.0 "ecoboost oil leak" on google, you'll find some discussion about it at fordownersclub. Anyway, apart from that, I only needed to replace heater/blower resistor (it was easy peasy & cost me 10 EUR) & remove some small rusty spot at the tailgate. No other issues so far. As for practically, the car is perfect for me - small enough to be agile & comfortable in a big city, but big enough when I need to pack in my bikes or camping stuff. But of course it's still Fiesta, so one should not expect premium materials in the interior. But it's still miles better than my old clunky C-MAX.

They fold annoyingly so they take up loads of luggage space. They are only a few bolts and a connector to remove completely. The trim in the boot also takes up lots of room, a lot less space for bikes than a Mark 1 Citroen Berlingo. The Courier Kombi has less trim in the bootspace but I assume the seats fold in the same way.

Seriously considering one of these to replace a 2001 Berlingo, most compact MPVs are now too long to fit in my garage. However its confusing that the Ford website only lists 1.5 litre diesels for both Zetec and Titanium specs, but some garages list a 1 litre petrol as the Zetec. Thanks, that was really useful as dealers only generally have the van version available for inspection.

It's ok looking for what it is but this isn't the point. The price is excellent, 3 kids might fit with all the accompanying stuff they take with them. Also the visibility and size mean it shouldn't be a pain to park. People slating this car probably don't get that this is a cheap utilitarian people carrier so aesthetic design isn't the primary goal.

Ford needs to offer this as an EV; there seems to be enough space under the floor for a battery pack. Perhaps they could use a motor of approx. 80 kW and a battery pack of approx. 200 mile range.

Had one nothing but trouble. Have a feel of how thin the metal bodywork . It also imo doesn't drive anywhere near as well as the connect, which is a heavier more planted feel vehicle. The horn is very weedy, headlights are not up to modern car standards and the body rolls more than expected. You also have to give the tailgate room to open and if parked upwards on a slope item can slide out of the flat load floor.. Personally I would give this a miss.
