Ford SY SX Territory, BA BF Falcon Ignition Switch Fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A common fault where your key won't return from the start position or any other similar problem associated with a faulty ignition barrel/ switch.
This relatively easy solution cost $0. Better than forking out hundreds on a complete steering column as the ignition barrels are part of the column.
This is my first video - go easy

    Fixed my BA ignition using this video today.. worked a treat! Really good detailed instructions. I left the column in the car, took me an hour or so but it's definitely awkward, dremel and drill only just fit in there. Worth a subscribe just for this cheers!

    Great video. Very handy, and clear instructions. The switch was loose in all key positions on my BA - nothing clicking. The black plastic cover, with all the wires, had fallen off. Lucky, I found the 2 ball bearings and the long thin spring (from behind the white nylon piece), on the car floor. I was surprised to find the tab is still intact. No doubt it will break off sometime soon. The lugs, which hold the black plastic cover on must have opened and released the cover.

  • @PangazShed

    @PangazShed

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, Didn't they understand during the design stage, that the plastic cover is under tension thanks to the spring, and that a couple of dimples on soft metal isn't good enough to hold the guts of the barrel in long term? I guess at the start Ford made alot of money selling replacement steering columns! Thanks for stopping by

  • @railtrolley

    @railtrolley

    @@PangazShed The switch should have been designed with some sort of clamp over the black plastic cover, and screwed on. The dimples holding the cover must get pushed away by the black cover over time, and use of the switch. I may make up something to hold the black cover on better. And some method of reinforcing the tab. I was lucky it is still there, but only a matter of time before it breaks off.

    Bakelite breaks ? Superglue. Lost your centre spring ?( boing! ,gone) Use spring from old Parker pen, give it a stretch first ,to reduce diameter. Lost those tiny Bb's ? Cut bb's from your old briggs&Stratton mower carby. Need to remove carrier ? (God only knows why) 1/2 " w/w tap , then pin punch out from lock side. "Start" not returning, ? Re-form "ramp " with pin -punch. And finally: Ensure earth tab protrudes far enough ; unless ya wanna cross the starter motor terminals every morning before driving off to work. Good vid , man .

    You saved my wallet a chunk of cash with your video so thanks for that. Your step by step process helped heaps along the way the only thing I did different was drop the steering column down by removing 4×10mm for easier access. It was a bit fidelity but I got the job done not a problem. Still you have wonder why it wasn't fixed in later model with a simple mod like that? My guess, a Deliberate design fault? Something Fords renowned for as my wallet and I have been finding out. At least this one didn't cost me and it'll pass rego. Then it's gone, and Fords on my never again buy list. So cheers mate from me and my wallet 👍 so thanks mate....Cheers!

    at around 8:30 the reason why most (not all) electronic accessories are off is to concentrate power to the starter motor and ignition coils so that the car starts cleanly and smoothly, it continues like so until the car is idling or running and generating power from the alternator, then which the accessories will turn back on! (Hope i wasn't too technical!)

    Thanks mate, just did this, all working, I used 1.5mm mild steel rod. I drilled holes closer to centre which in hind sight made it quite tight to fit between plastic and spring but a little modification to steel clip helped. This should be a recall from Ford, what a stupid fault to occur, just bad design.

    I know I'm late to this video, but was pointed to this video by a ford engineer - :) Xheapest territory column I could find was about $280. Repair kit about $300. This is better! I have been nervous everystep of the way, but have the wire loop in and key looks like it's returning - so , so far, so good! Now just to put it all back in the car.... I'm interested if anyone else who had this issue also had any other weird electrical issues? Before the "detent lug" failed on mine completely, I had intermittant starts. some times would just act like a dead battery - but it wasn't... I'm hoping that this problem may have been the cause of that too. Maybe an errant piece of lug bridging contacts it shouldn't.

    $300! Compared to $0. Whilst he had it out, there are things Ang could have done to stop the black plastic ignition switch falling off in the future, but why pay $300! for a product, if it works correctly and as stated, you will only use once. By the way, there is no such thing as a lifetime warranty which is why you do not have a copy of the warranty on your website for customers to see BEFORE they buy.
