Ford Super Duty Parking Brake Repair and adjustment

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the common parking brake setup on a lot of the Ford Super Duty trucks. The pedal would not come back up all the way.

Great video! I actually came to see how you installed the top horizonal shoe retract spring. I'm replacing the shoes and spring kit and I fought with mine for a good 30min before I walked away for the night. Come to learn, thankfully, that it apparently gets installed on the shoes before they go over the hub. Went back out to the garage, and had them installed in a matter of minutes. KZread for the win! Thank you very much! Much appreciated! Time for a beer 🍺! Cheers 🍻

If I have ever thanked someone for their effort to publish a How To video on KZread, you are it! This was exactly the problem with my e-brake on a 2014 Ford F250 Super Duty truck. $35.38 for Dorman 926-292 Parking Brake Lever Kit plus additional parts to replace the worn out e-brake shoes. The Door Spring compressor tool trick and the small hose clamp trick for the passenger side cable retainer were ingenious and a sign of mechanical expertise. I bought the door spring compressor tool before tearing things apart. Again! Thank you and I hope to pay it forward.

NEILVVT I completely agree on the spring being the worst part! Not only did the brake lever freeze up on me, but the dust shield rusted and fell apart so the drum brake folded inward making everything seize up. This time I painted the new dust shield with epoxy paint to add an extra layer of protection. Plus I used the electrolyzing process to remove the rust from parts and painted them. Using that method makes the parts just like new, but takes some time.

@@NEILSWORLD So for whatever reason Ford made the 99 F250 SRW truck with a smaller area, I ended up having to pull the axles out and replaced the inner and outer seals as well as the drum brake shoes and hardware, and both front and rear rotors, caliper's, pads, and the middle section that was broken, e brake cable. Flushed brake system and tonight going to check rear differential oil. To anyone wondering what tool i used to get spindle nuts off, I purchased the spindle socket from OOO O'Reilly's auto for either 28 or 18 bucks. *note* the driver side spindle nut is reverse thread.

Wellll my truck is a 99 but perhaps early/late... my clearances were smaller and the back spring on the drum brake was much bigger.... but w/ some spray grease I got it out and back in about 1.5 hours. The 2nd wheel took 30 minutes total as i knew what to do. Still better than messing w/ pulling the axels and seals and messing w/ bearings.......

@@chrisweaver9391 I have a 99 as well and noticed the clearance issue as well. Any suggestions? I have replaced front, in the middle of rear brake job and found the drum shoes behind rotor. I didn't know that. Explains why my e brake cable broke a few months back.

  • @truthsmiles

My parking brakes didn’t work, even though the pedal felt solid… turns out both wheel seals were shot, which meant the shoes were covered in differential fluid and too slippery to work. What started as a simple adjustment turned into a much bigger project haha. All new shoes, rotors, pads, and of course seals. For others, I didn’t actually need to remove the parking brake cable from the mechanism to do the job. The hardest part of the brakes for me was getting those little retaining clips back on. I should really invest in some needle nose vice grips :)

I am in the middle of a rear brake replacement on my 2009 F350 srw. The spring tip will come in handy. But - the lever thing is cheap enough (the pair for ~$17 on Rock Auto) that I am not going to mess with trying to resuscitate the old ones. Mine had the backing plates eaten up by rust - I am considering galvanizing the new ones.

Thanks for the great video. You don't say the differences between the driver's and passenger's side. I think that the adjustment thingy with the wheel has the wheel toward the rear of the vehicle on the driver's side but toward the front on the passenger's side. In your video, you work on the driver's side and you install the adjuster with the wheel toward the rear of the vehicle. But in other videos they work on the passenger side and describe the wheel being toward the front of the vehicle.

My pedal still had resistance, but after a heavy rain, my rear brakes seized. I took them apart, sure enough, that lever was seized. My shoes were worn to paper thin metal, the truck is only 4. I bought that compressor, never undid the cable through those tabs though, and managed to get the lever off the cable end. It took a lot of banging, there is a square ended pin, the lever pivots on that pin. Finally loose, I wire wheeled, heat painted, brake lubed it, and reassembled. With new shoes and springs and pins of course. I Adjusted the star wheel a bit so the pedal has good bite, now, full parking brake has been restored. Note, the star adjuster is CLOCKWISE to tighten will looking from the back of the truck- so UP on passenger, DOWN on driver’s side. That lever seizing like that is complete B.S. 4 yrs? C’mon man.

Thanks for the thorough video! The parking brake on my '99 F250 Super Duty hasn't worked since I bought the truck. I haven't torn into the rear brakes just yet, but I do know that the adjuster is completely absent on the driver's side. I've heard that one adjuster should face forward and one should face backwards so that no matter which side you are working on, prying up tightens and prying down loosens. However, that missing adjuster leaves me no original configuration to reference. Do you know if what I stated above is true?

Just a suggestion, if I may. If you’re going to make a video to help people work on their own vehicle, would you please use the proper terminology? If they go to the automotive supply store, a younger employee might not be able to help them. Star wheel, not adjusting mechanism. Parking brake shoe, not pad

Thank you for the comment. I realized I made the mistake of calling the brake shoe a pad. I just tried Google searching star wheel and came up with some astronomy devices. When I searched break adjusting mechanism the part in my video showed right up.

@@NEILSWORLD that’s so funny, everything I found through eBay says star wheel and I’m an old school wrench and didn’t even know what they were talking about. Lol at myself

You go to all that trouble doing that why didn't you put new brakes on with a new spring kit.?? Good video of repairs done though.

That would have been an unnecessary waste of money. The brake pads have years of life left in them and there was nothing wrong with the springs.
