Ford S-Max Handbrake Lever Sticks, Parking Brake, E-Brake

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This 2007 Ford S-Max came in with the Handbrake mechanism sticking on. The owner bought a new lever mechanism & I had the joy of changing it. Enjoy :)
Here is a link to a cable repair kit for this mechanism amzn.to/2V9xBOo and a video how to fit it here. • Ford S-Max Galaxy Hand...

Thanks for a really helpful video. Would never have found some of those retaining screws. One thing I would point out to people is if you have snapped the handle release cable don't buy the whole mechanism from Ford. They will charge in excess of £200 for the part and you can double that if you want it fitted. I bought an x8r cable for £35 and using this video along side theirs worked a treat. You won't need to get under the vehicle at all. Follow this video to take all the interior trim apart and then watch the x8r video to replace and fit their improved cable which can be done in situ. Took my dad and I about 3 hours with a tea break.

Yes the X8R guys asked my permission to use this video. I only wish their repair cable was available at the time I recorded it. Thanks for you feedback.

Great video, I have 2 Smax's and one now has covered 203000 miles. It needed the handbrake replacement when the cable wore out. To be honest I can't complain, it's on original engine, turbo, injectors, clutch, DMF, PDF. It's been serviced every 12500 miles and I think it will comfortably do a quarter of a million miles

Damn Rob, I've never seen so many screws holding a console together. And that parking brake assembly was huge and complicated looking. When I saw all this, I figured that Ford called the German engineers for help on this design :) Good one Rob...

That was a hell of a lot of disassembly to get to that. With the crack in the trim housing and missing heat shield do you think someone had been trying to rectify before bringing it to you?

  • @OneAuto

Someone had definitely been there before, maybe for the same thing. The heat shield had just corroded around the fixings cause the fixings were still there. I know what I'm up against for next time 👍

Lots of standard transmissions over in england. In canada its rare for someone to buy one compared to all the automatics. Most manufacturers don't even offer a standard gearbox except the small cars. Do most drive standards in england. HAHA I never used my park brake in 40 years. LOL

  • @OneAuto

Yes Steve most are manual transmissions here. But you guys get the big gas guzzlers that are a smoother drive with an auto. We have auto's in the bigger engines but not much over the 3 litre mark. Do you need a parking brake for an Inspection?

NO!! Loved this video, but I tried the cable replacement route and it's a no go. The cable that's on sale needs to be threaded through the whole mechanism which also involves drilling out a rivot. I wasted £35 trying that and several hours of cursing - spent £180 on new mechanism and get a shiny new handle to boot! plus fitted in under a couple of hours thanks to this great video

I don't know what it is about ford dashboards with all the screws in them. It must cost a significant amount of money (in mass production terms) to pay a bloke to put all those screws in at the factory when you could use a few bolts and some plastic clips for less money and assemble it in a fraction of the time.

Ahh yes, you want to change the parking brake mechanism? Ok I just need to disassemble your entire car. I estimate the job with VAT will be about £120 parts and £900 labour. On the up side, if we remove all the surplus Torx screws, the vehicle will gain 15bhp and 12 mpg. Now I feel your pain!! :)
