Ford Ranger steering box adjustment | 2007 Ford Ranger 2.5 TDCi 4x4 double cab

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Demonstrates Ford Ranger steering box adjustment on a 2007 Ford Ranger 2.5 TDCi double cab 4x4. The vehicle was due for its annual inspection and at the previous inspection, the tester commented that the steering play was nearly at the point where it would fail the inspection. They said it might need a new steering box.
The play / slop / backlash in the steering can be adjusted at the steering box, and this video shows how this was done.
There is supposed to be some play in the steering system on this vehicle: the factory workshop manual states 0-30mm, measured at the outer rim of the steering wheel.
The first step is to check all the ball joints in the steering and front suspension, to make sure they aren't the cause of the sloppy steering.
After that, I measured the play at the steering wheel. It was around 35 mm in my case. At this point I checked the MOT inspection manual and found that the test allows for play of up to 75 mm!
This vehicle was still outside the manufacturer's specification, so I went on to adjust the steering box.
The battery, battery tray and battery tray support bracket need to be removed to get to the adjustment screw.
Next I loosened the 17 mm lock nut on the adjustment screw and made small adjustments until I was happy with the play measurement at the steering wheel.
The Ranger passed the MOT with no advisories - good news!

Thanks for this step by step video. FYI: same procedure for all Ford/Mazda from 1999 mk models. 👍

Great video. Just finished doing mine, what a difference ! That bracket was a killer because I have big hands. I took out the bolt closest to the front then just rotated the bracket upward pivoting on the other bolt giving me room to get at it. Took almost 45 min to take apart and about 5 mins to put back together !

On left-hand drive cars, nothing needs to be unscrewed. The steering gear is fully visible and easily accessible.

Is there any "feedback" built into the hydraulics? Or controls that account for vehicle speed, rate of turn, etc.? Or is the power assist the same for all driving conditions? It seems electric power steering setups have inputs from the engine control module that adjust for vehicle speed, rotation of the steering wheel by the driver, etc. Maybe hydraulic power steering is just basic assist, regardless of operating conditions.

I'm pretty sure in this vehicle it is just basic power assistance.

Does anybody know if this is a fix for a 2012 PX1 ranger. I get terrible wheel wobble at 110 kph. Might be tracking but not sure.

You need a big heavy lady in the passenger seat 😄. It's probably a tracking issue. Get the front wheels aligned.

I cant get any improvement on my steering box - i think shes so worn out its pointless- look8ng at replacing the steering gear box looks quite time consuming

Sorry to hear it, yes I think it is quite a time consuming job. I understand the pitman arm can be 'challenging' to remove, so I'd anticipate getting a new one of those too.

The excess play in the steering box is a massive fault by Ford . Not all steering boxes have this issue . Its caused by the way the gears are machined . SOLUTION IS 2 FOLD 1/// Adjust with a crows foot spanner ,, wheels straight ahead Technique adjust till there is zero play and back off adjuster till there is the very very smallest play between adjuster and internal gear . Caution this ""play"" will change when u do lock nut up . If it does redo over . 2// Wheel alignment set the caster to average 2.5 degrees . This will make vehicle very sure footed on road ie more stable feeling

Ford Ranger steering boxes are very very poor quality internally which is the main culprit . Many were replaced under warranty . Even adjusting the screw to have zero play the box can still have internal free play . Adjustment should never be done with zero clearance ,,no steer box ever has zero play on the screw
