Happens to all of us. In my case, I recently spent over 1k repairing the head on a Yamaha outboard, because it was letting in water. Only to find, later, that there was also a hole on the block that I hadn't seen. When it happens, suddenly everybody else is an expert on the subject lol. This is an interesting video for me because I just bought a high mileage 3.2 Ranger. Fingers crossed it keeps on running. Cheers from Australia

Hi free thinkers, two points cause excess piston ring & cyclinder wear. One is the Crankcase vent valve gasses from crankcase directed into intake after air filter, particulates are abrasive. People fit catch can to crankcase vent system to minimise damage. Some catch can filters become blocked & crankcase pressure is relieved through crankshaft seal actually leak oil at seals. The main abrasive problem is EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation, this emission destroys piston cyclinders & rings with exhaust carbon directed into selected cyclinders. When you remove cyclinder head first give away is ring ridge excessive due to exhaust abrasion. You can see exhaust mottling on valve seat, valves seat maybe leaking. Most engines diesel destroyed at 300, 000 klms.

I AM VERY MUCH LIKE THIS VIDEO. THE HONESTY OF THIS MAN IS BRILLIANT. THE LAST CLIP I'VED SEEN AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE AND THE BUBBLES COMIN UP AND ITS LIKE A FISH TANK. ITS THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY RANGER IT BUBBLES UP EVERYTIME I START THE ENGINE BUT NO TICKING NOISE. IN THIS VIDEO I HAVE NOW IDEA ITHAT IN MY RANGER THE PROBLEM WOULD BE HEADGASKET THEN MAYBE THE CYLINDER HEAD WARPED. SO IT WOULD BE BETTER TO BUY A NEW HEAD AND INSTALL OLD COMPONENTS OUT OF THE OLD HEAD THAT WOULD BE LESS COST .SKIMMING THE HEAD AND TEST IS COST MORE A LOT THAN BUYING A NEW ONE... THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO I COULD DO MY OWN NOW AND EVERYTHING IS IN PLAN...GOOD JOB MATE
@kennedysgarage3281

Hi Louie, the actual cause of the head gasket and ticking noise in these engines is due to the engines overheating. This is caused by the EGR cooler to the rear of the engine failing. This EGR cooler gone can give similar symptoms & I would advise changing that first & the monitoring you symptoms again. Let me know how you get on 😉🤞🤞

Thanks for your honesty posting this, that takes balls. only someone with confidence in themselves would do so. Most workshops nowadays would not take on these jobs. Just a side note on these EGR coolers, I had one I suspected was faulty, the customer stated that is was going through coolant and blowing white smoke occasionally but running smooth. We removed the transmission and unbolted the exhaust flanges both sides (slightly different design to yours). Put the pressure tester on the cooling system o/night and in the morning, nothing, no coolant coming from the exhaust side of the cooler. After some thought I heated the cooler up and then the coolant came pissing out! I cut the egr open to try and figure out why they fail, as this seems common. My theory is the failure point is the ends of the cooler pipes that have the exhaust gas run through them fail. They are sealed at the ends by all fitting into a round plate at the end, then the ends of the tubes are just flared to seal them to the end plate, over time with heat and expansion the tubes are growing in length and pushing away from the plate, hence why mine leaked after I heated it. Just my theory. Love the cartoons, awaiting part 3.

That's a bugger. I rebuild Ranger / BT50 engines regularly so I've got a tip for you if you're interested. These cylinder heads do not handle getting hot - they go soft and generally need to be replaced. Must be the alloy qualities used. You were bloody lucky getting away without using the timing tools. They are super fussy with cam / crank correlation. The tools lock in at 50 deg BTDC #1 fyi Good luck

Great for being honest. We've all had jobs that turn to shit. You learn from them. I have seen diesels shrink pistons because of heat causing a noise like a big end. I did a similar job on a Hilux and used the original head, it was fine. It did look like it was replaced probably from the overheat that did the pistons. I rolled the dice and got lucky. I too have been bitten by a Ranger, replaced the head , EGR cooler, water pump & radiator, only to still pressurize. Problem was a hole in the block.

Chocolate Ford pistons Peter - have a look at the ones in Transits - similar issue - soft pistons (loads blow holes in themselves & slap about in the bores causing scoring) - new pistons. But the new ones tend to be as chocolate as the old ones & cack themselves in jig time as well...... rebuilds tend to be semi-temporary..... Honing was the right call as the issue isn't the bores - it's the junky pistons.

Some surprising things to me in this video. When using a scope, if you turn the scope and the image or perceived fault rotates with you, its the scope, if it turns opposite in reference to the image, it's in the engine. Straight honing the bores, no cross hatching. No oil pump replacement. Spin the engine so it "hopefully just lubricates", no actual pressure testing! Using old coolant hoses on the EGR cooler and anywhere on the engine! Not replacing worn gears because you like prefer the look of the old ones, ready to wear the new chain! I'll guess the bearings weren't plastigauged. Yeah cut me down, I'm not a mechanic but I'm "sure glad it's not my vehicle!" YMMV! Edit: And I didn't even get to the end of the video, have now, wow! Oh well, maybe next time it'll be WHOLLY different!

I guess you are absolutely correct. The engine should be removed and sent to an engine shop to be rebuilt with everything you mentioned done. I was speaking to the owner 2 days ago about his A/C and the car is running perfect.

I have a question about a 2007 mazda 6 diesel engine (RF7J) the car idle well at around(700-750), but whenever i move and stop rpm will stay around (850-900) for 2 minutes(tested several times) with engine louder than normal even louder than normally pushing to 1000 rpm without moving. then the car idle(700-750), it doesn't matter how much I drove even a few hundred yards. it will always do this. if i stop then drive then stop, it will always do this. is it a dpf fail? or that's how they work.

@@fishing-big-portsmouth cooling systems act funny on modern vehicles. 🤔🤔 On cold start up the coolant is only pumped through the heater radiator/matrix & what I have seen is this seems to be enough to keep the engine cool while the car is stationary, especially if the blower motor is running. Then once the water stops circulating with the engine turned off, the coolant temperature rises due to the water being stagnant and the heat from the steel in the engine. This could possibly then raise the coolant temperature 5 or 10 degrees just enough to open the thermostat. Does that make sense??? I could be so far wrong but I’m thinking your heater radiator could be blocked 🤔🤔 I had very similar a fault recently on a 2016 transit

Hi Louie, the actual cause of the head gasket and ticking noise in these engines is due to the engines overheating. This is caused by the EGR cooler to the rear of the engine failing.

I just want to say you’ve done what the rest of us would do! I really wish I found this video before doing the exact same as yourself! New oil pump, crank regrinded, big ends, head gasket etc.. head looked decent so chucked it back on and now I have pressure and bubbles! Did you sort it after taking the head back off and skimming ? Keep going though as it’s because of these little errors big garages aren’t doing these jobs any more.

The owner had gotten quotes & time lines for this but did not like either, so asked me would I take it on. And yes I did at a much smaller expense & time line. I was speaking to the owner 2 days ago about his A/C and the car is running perfect.
When you want to check the head gasket first remove injector .when you keep piston at top .then four valve should be closed. Then open the cap of radiator . then where you remove injector from the hole.when you put a pressure of air .Then you observe the bubbles on radiators cap.so,I think that your head gasket is leaking. I am not suitable to tell you this.but you can try my advice. And I hope that this will help you. And I learn every thing from you and I am still learning from you.... 😄 🙏🙏🙏
