Ford R1014 RLS469T Arbroath 13/09/15

A short trip on RLS469T, a Ford R1014 with Alexander Y-type bodywork, from Arbroath centre and along the sea front on 13/09/15. This bus has been superbly restored by Sandy Webster.

Loving the sound effects. Back in the 80's my school coach was a Ford R1114/Plaxton.

This must be related to the Ford RK215 chassis that were sold in Australia in reasonable numbers in the 1960s. I was astounded to learn they were being made until 1986. I don't think any were sold beyond the early 70s in Australia.

The front engine and manual gearbox make it look and sound very crude compared with Leyland products of that period. I imagine the Ford was cheaaper or more economical. What an awkward entrance layout. There was more character in these old vehicles but thank goodness for the accessible entrances today.

Im guessing that this bus has the Ford Dorset/Dover engine in it. Sounds very similar to the engines that were in Ford Cargo's.

There weren't many Ford engined buses made were they? I can only think of these ,R1114's on Plaxton bodied Parmounts, and the mini buses like the Carlyle bodied Transits.

There were some ECW bodied R1014's with Bristol LH style bodies for Hants & Dorset, a local op to me when I was growing up had a 1014 with Caetano bodywork, Hughes Of Castleford has quite a few 11m Fords with Supreme and Duple Dominant bodies. They were more popular than you think, and a friend of mine has a Thames with Duple Yeoman body

I used to drive a D-Series Ford box van with the 6speed gearbox, changing gear was like stirring soup, worse gearbox I’ve ever had the misfortune to come across,I hated that trucks gearbox.

Sound like a bad nightmare, I've driven Ford R series coaches, noisy, underpowered and really dodgy air over hydraulic brakes, made Bedfords feel a class above.

Ford R series bus is most popular in Hong Kong, but it is really underpower, it is slow when uphill and low top speed on highway. Many of Ford R series bus replace with Isuzu engine in 90s. Ford engine sound just like the low rev Isuzu engine

Painfully noisy and under powered. Bedford Y series was a far better chassis.
