Brian, great trick and tip! I actually did that once on a rounded off o2 sensor. I cut the tip of where the wires go in to. I used a old socket, I tack welded couple on to it. I was able to crack it out. But I'll try your tip for the steering lines. My lines are starting to go bad. Thanks Brian!

This video helped me replace the two transfer lines with relative ease! After soaking them several times with PB it seemed I might need a new rack. But following this video and just cutting the lines from the fittings did the trick! 2 local mechanics failed to do this job, one gave up due to ordering the wrong parts, the other didn't replace the transfer and cooling lines even though I asked for ALL lines and the pump to be replaced and he gave it back to me still leaking!

Thank you so much for this idea! My return line was so stuck I had to put a bolt extractor socket on it and it still took 30 minutes, AFTER I cut it off like in the video. However, I was able to get it out, and certainly would never have been able to do so had I just tried a flare nut wrench, etc. 6/5 stars for you sir!

That's actually a good idea, however I go a bit farther than that, I actually do not use a cutoff wheel, I use a bolt cutter to cut them off because I do not want all of those metal shavings going into the steering gearbox nor into the power steering pump, so I cut it off clean with a bolt cutter then use a socket like you do there in your video, and that way there is no chance of debris going into the power steering system...

True but like you saw here once the line is cut it pukes fluid as it flows out it brings the contaminant with it. I still like the mini bolt cutter idea.

I like using an air saw to cut the lines for access. Some times corrosion gets so bad you have to beat on a smaller 6 point socket because the fitting is undersized.

Hi Brian, I've got a question about my 2013 Ford Explorer 3.5L Engine with rear HVAC. How do you purge the air out of the cooling system? I thought all the newer vehicles went away from manually purge valves. Does this have one? At idle, the air is warm/cool, but as soon as I press the accelerator it turns hot which suggests air in the system. The coolant is full, no external leaks, no milky sludge under the oil cap or on the dipstick, which rules out an internal leak. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Soooo i know this video is 5 years old an all, but do you know if it's possible to get the rack to rack lines off the top of the rack without removing the whole rack? i'd rather not have to deal with the pump to rack lines if i can help it. and one of my rack lines seems to be leaking at the rack itself, i thought maybe it was loose, or just terrible rusted through. but i can't even get to the damn bolt/nut on the line where they all go in. there's just no room in there. 03 5.4 expedition.

My 07 F150 with all the salt and brine from the road departments for snow, have my entire trans, oil and power steering lines rusted and leaking. Ford dealer said he has never scene so many rusted out lines on all the trucks that come into the dealership in his lifetime as a tech. Said put a sprinkler under the truck when weather warms up enough and let is go for 30 minutes after every time its on the road with snow... I spent 2 weeks and almost 2k for all the lines and connections when I changed them out. Had to make the power steering lines to the power steering rack, cause there was a 2 month wait for replacement lines, because they are failing too fast for the aftermarket manufacturer to make.

Aren't they coated? My 98 Grand Marquis is all plastic coated. If you have to remove an end fitting though it is like in the video, the line is usually trash. I ended up replacing all those lines on my old explorer, but wasn't nearly $100 in parts for everything. WOW!
