I had this same problem on an 04 Mustang. I was certain that it was a pump but a mechanic friend told me that it was the U joint on the steering shaft. Hit it with quickly with a torch and then some WD-40. Freed it up temporarily but had to replace it a few month later. Had rusted up pretty bad. Fix was pretty simple however.

You’re a very animated person! Thanks for the vid. Just bought a focus that has a bind spot in the steering. Pump was replaced apparently when it went bad it’s bonded like this since. It’s not too hard to overcome but want to get to the bottom of it eventually. For now it needs a timing belt and a clutch and some other tlc before I worry about that.

Hello, i have a 2002 grand marquis and the power steering pump was leaking so i replaced it with Motorcraft refurbished one and the mechanic added an Acdelco oil instead, before that i was topping up the oil with some mercedes benz power steering oil and it ran ok. But after the replacement i started to have this problem when i suddenly turning the steering to make a maneuver. Checked the steering shaft and sprayed it with some white lithium grease and nothing has changed.. what are your thoughts?

Hello!! I have a 2014 F-150 Crew Cab 4wd with +64k miles. Today, with a snow storm coming thru, I decided to use 4wd high to keep control of the truck. Ran for +20 miles, and when I turned to park the truck, the were a force the stopped any movement and didn’t let the truck move. I switched back to 4x2 and the differential kept holding the movement for almost 100 ft. Can I expect something wrong with the differential? Why this truck doesn’t drive in 4wd high like a regular AWD car?? Any help will be appreciated, thank you!!

My 95 dodge caravan was low on every fluid when I bought it, I put a big bottle of Lucas power steering stop leak, it got rid of the high pitched whine and the wheel turned great for a while. Recently it started to bind up while trying to turn into a parking space at low speed so I took it to a mechanic for advice and he told me it needs the rest of the fluid filled because it's not getting enough pressure to maintain power steering while at such low speed and when it cuts off the engine stops too which scares me for the sake of the car, but it is probably safest. It's just that the wheel resets to center very fast while I expect to turn, don't wanna hit anyone else's car

Well maybe you can answer a question for me. 2004 crown victoria no air susp. Should the vaps solenoid revert to full assist when unplugged? Mine does not change plugged or not I have very low to no assist. Everything mechanical has been replaced.

Well after replacing the rack and pump and confirming pressure and no binding...it was the vaps module. Internal short is my guess had two powers coming out, one of witch should have been a ground.

MIne is getting a lil funky..2011 with 100k...seems to not return after turning the wheel. Say I take a left turn, I used to be able to let loose of the wheel after turning and it would come back mostly on its own but now I need to physically steer it back straight? No whining noise.

Quick question. My 2005 Explorer has a bellow on the steering shaft in the engine compartment, but my 2005 Freestar does not. Is it needed on the Ex? Thanks in advance!

Yes as the explorer shaft is in the front and exposed but the freestar is in the rear protected.

+FordTechMakuloco So in this example that you just gave, does this mean the truck needs a new power steering pump? I have this issue with my 02 f250 7.3. When steering you hear the loud whining sound.

I also have this issue w 2001 f350 7.3 . my brakes are a little sticky also. When would it be the power booster? Did the power steering pump solve your problem sshrop5 ?

So if you rev it to 2000 rpms and try to turn and it’s still binding up what does that mean?

How does one obtain the proper code when programming the PSCM? Ford software seems cumbersome to me.
