Ford OBS F-350 ZF6 swap install overview
Breakdown of my ZF6 swap into my 1997 F350 7.3 Powerstroke. I used a ZF6 out of a Early 1999 F350 with a NP271 transfer case. The factory Zf6 clutch assembly was used as with the clutch slave and transmission mount.

Glad to help!! Did you see the part 2 video? It covers a couple more things I missed in this video.
How did you locate the height for the drivers side of the crossmember you used? I am in the middle of the swap I am going to run the crossmember out of the super duty. Passenger side is easy as it sits on the frame, the drivers side seems there is some room for error on the placement of the holes.. Thanks!
@GillansGarage

I made sure my truck frame was level then I leveled the crossmember where the transmission bolts to the crossmember. There’s that flat spot for the transmission mount to lay a level on.
@PROBLEMS-ue1xi

@@GillansGarage Awesome, how much did you have to clearance the transmission tunnel? I am close to the height I need to be at with the super duty crossmember installed but I am seeing where I will need to dent the tunnel just behind where the manual transmission "hump" or "plate" mounts and possibly where the shifter boot mounts.. For me to get the crossmember level I will have to clearance those areas to push the crossmember up level.

I tweaked the floor at the rear of the hump opening and butyl sealed the cover and didn’t install the center screw at the rear of cover. I had the transmission bolted fast and used it to pry against to give the needed clearance without going too far. I hope that makes some sort of sense. Haha.
I'm tryin to see which mounting holes you used in the cross member., forward or rearward? I think im going to need some body mounts, my zf6 seems to be touching the floor. 😅

Man I wish I could post a picture. I may have drilled to new holes on the front half of the mount. I finished my swap a few months back and am tring to get my 4x4 and low indicator lights to work. I can get each light to work by grounding them out with 1 of the 2 wires respectively. The problem im having is the switch in the np271 seems to be a 2 wire open/closed switch. Did you get yours to work correctly? Am i missing something? Also would like to add that with the zf6 you now get to go from a 12" clutch to a 13" clutch therefor you can handle more torque. Thanks

Is the zf6 the strongest trans with the most gears that can be fitted behind the 7.3 obs body style? If so is there a specific year truck with zf6 that would be best to look for or are they all the same?
@GillansGarage
8 ай бұрын
Yes, the ZF6 is the strongest factory 7.3 transmission available with a factory rating of 650ftlbs of torque versus a Powerstroke ZF5 being rated at 475ftlbs of torque. You can use any ZF6 from a 1999-2003 7.3 truck.
Hey, I’m going to swap my zf5 on my 95 to zf6. I have a couple questions if anyone could answer I’d appreciate it. Does the crossmember have to be e99 zf6 or do all NBS crossmembers work?(the trans I’m putting in is a 2003)Is it the same clutch from zf5? (I have solid flywheel conversion kit) How much lower were your RPMs on the highway? A lot of people that haven’t done this have told me it’s not worth the swap and that I’ll have to smash the cab with a hammer to get it to fit. I already have the trans tho so really no turning back. Also my zf5 is garbage anyway due to previous owner not installing pilot bearing when doing the solid flywheel conversion.
@GillansGarage
2 ай бұрын
I would assume any 7.3 ZF6 crossmember will work with the small modification I mentioned. I used the ZF6 clutch which if I recall correctly it’s bigger than the ZF5 clutch. Based on the math it will lower your top end rpm’s by about 120 rpm’s but that’s only half the story. The better low gear and the shift pattern with low and reverse across from each other is a big benefit for me especially whenever pulling a load and maneuvering it. The only minor tweak I had to make was at the back of the opening in floor and leave one screw out in the center of that cover. Very minor considering the benefits for me. I’ve got about 40k miles on my swap and I have zero regrets.

Did you have any problems with pinion or driveshaft angles??

No, before I started I checked the angle of the engine and transmission with the stock ZF5 and made sure that when I installed the ZF6 and it crossmember I made sure it was the same angle which it was without having to modify the main crossmember. Also being a Crew Cab Long Bed it has a carrier bearing for the driveshaft which I didn’t change that position at all so the final angle into the pinion shouldn’t not have changed doing this swap.
