Ford OBS F-350 ZF6 swap install overview

Breakdown of my ZF6 swap into my 1997 F350 7.3 Powerstroke. I used a ZF6 out of a Early 1999 F350 with a NP271 transfer case. The factory Zf6 clutch assembly was used as with the clutch slave and transmission mount.

    Yes, the ZF6 is the strongest factory 7.3 transmission available with a factory rating of 650ftlbs of torque versus a Powerstroke ZF5 being rated at 475ftlbs of torque. You can use any ZF6 from a 1999-2003 7.3 truck.

    Hey, I’m going to swap my zf5 on my 95 to zf6. I have a couple questions if anyone could answer I’d appreciate it. Does the crossmember have to be e99 zf6 or do all NBS crossmembers work?(the trans I’m putting in is a 2003)Is it the same clutch from zf5? (I have solid flywheel conversion kit) How much lower were your RPMs on the highway? A lot of people that haven’t done this have told me it’s not worth the swap and that I’ll have to smash the cab with a hammer to get it to fit. I already have the trans tho so really no turning back. Also my zf5 is garbage anyway due to previous owner not installing pilot bearing when doing the solid flywheel conversion.

  • @GillansGarage

    @GillansGarage

    2 ай бұрын

    I would assume any 7.3 ZF6 crossmember will work with the small modification I mentioned. I used the ZF6 clutch which if I recall correctly it’s bigger than the ZF5 clutch. Based on the math it will lower your top end rpm’s by about 120 rpm’s but that’s only half the story. The better low gear and the shift pattern with low and reverse across from each other is a big benefit for me especially whenever pulling a load and maneuvering it. The only minor tweak I had to make was at the back of the opening in floor and leave one screw out in the center of that cover. Very minor considering the benefits for me. I’ve got about 40k miles on my swap and I have zero regrets.

    I’m using a Mishimoto aluminum radiator that has an internal transmisssion cooler which can be used for both automatic and ZF6 transmission.

    Well, I bought the parts truck I got this transmission out of for $3000. The transmission was literally just rebuilt and never driven. I parted the rest of the truck of the truck out and recouped at least 75% of money back. The clutch was new as well help helped cut costs. So I had the cost of the driveshaft modification which was like $140 and my labor time(which I don’t count). So I would say it cost me somewhere around $1000.
