Ford Mustang CS850GT vs Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 - modified American muscle cars compared

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When London-based muscle car importer Clive Sutton offered us a drive in its latest modified offering, the Ford Mustang CS850GT, the only thing to do was to organise a welcoming party involving Silverstone’s Stowe Circuit and a bit of friendly competition in the form of a similarly tricked-up Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
Most rivals would have wilted in the face of this mighty tuned Mustang’s 850bhp and 665lb ft of torque; but owner Gary Handa’s specially supercharged Camaro develops 770bhp itself. Both of these cars would do supercar-rivalling dragstrip standing-quarter-mile times. But which would be the more usable daily-driver? Which has more bleeding-heart V8 drama and soul? And, most importantly, which would you choose? Let Autocar testers Matt Prior and Richard Lane be your guides.

I'd rather have a stock GT500 or ZL1 1LE over these two modified versions. The Mustang is making some concerning noises under load, and I'm not referring to the supercharger whine. It sounds like some part of the driveline is touching the chassis. The Camaro has a tiny aftermarket methanol tank that sets off an alarm constantly. Those are the kind of problems you see in aftermarket cars.

@@ZeGermanHam In the USA you can get a GM Performance intake and GM tune at a dealer that is emissions compliant, and with a catback exhaust system that would get 700 BHP or 620 BHP at the wheels(100 BHP per liter at the wheels) which is all that I would want in a vehicle designed for 650 BHP(as one example the small 1.7L supercharger spins at a higher rpm, creating for more heat soak, but one can add an additive that will keep the engine coolant at a lower temperature).

It was imported as a stock ZL1 then the 1LE aero bits were put on, it was mentioned that is car has magnitorial dampers, instead of the DSSV dampers that a ZL1 1LE have. Yes both the ZL1 1LE front aero is illegal, and the rear wheel/tyres are illegal on the ZL1 1LE In the UK(has 325/30r19 on 12 inch wide rear wheels that stick out past the top of the fender lip, the ZL1 has 285/30r20 and 305/30r20 tyres that don't stick out past the top of the fender lip as this video showed).

Both great cars but clearly they're not perfectly reliable. The Camaro throwing tantrum signals and the Mustang also sounded a bit off in places while accelerating. Not sure if those issues has to do with the aftermarket mods or the cars themselves but I think I'd be more at peace with a stock Camaro ZL1. Or, for 65-70K, an M340i.

Richard lane comes across as a rather pompously arrogant snob... The Camaro's way more agricultural than the Mustang and certainly looks bigger and fatter it is rather more difficult to see out of yet he unashamedly ignored in the Camaro all the things he faulted the Mustang for. The fact is they are both aftermarket modifications of cars and so the ride and sound shouldn't be mentioned comparatively and in their home market the Camaro lags behind the Mustang in every single guise out of the factory.. Their cars their their market they know better than the snob...
