Ford Mondeo Mk3, Rear Wheel Bearing.... I cant hear nothing !!
The owner of the vehicle heard something but was oblivious to the seriousness of how bad his wheel bearing was.
A really badly worn out rear wheel bearing, the wheel was not too far from becoming separated from the car...i failed this wheel bearing on an mot test and then show how i changed it.

Didn’t think those hub bolts were going to come out! Nice one👍
I really like your videos. I own a mkV so I can learn a lot from what you talk about. Good job and thank you.

Front are a bollocks to do 😂
Easiest way I have found is to use an angle grinder and just cut out a big section of the hub around the access hole. This lets you get the torx bit in much closer and less chance of wrecking the head
It was painful to see you putting those old bolts in, sad to see new ones weren't included.
Very good!And thanks for tightening wheel bolts by hands not by the airgun!
Thanks great video amigo!!!
I drove a new Mk 3 as part of a company fleet & it was quick with its 6 speed box It seemed miles ahead in design then the 90`s Vectra I had been driving.
Go on Alan good work mate

That Mondeo covers < 5000 miles a year but I personally don't understand why anybody would keep driving a car with brake related MOT advisories without getting them fixed for several years. Oh well, shows what I know.

Lovely brush. Well not for long.
My 51 plate hatchback got through about 4 rear wheel bearings in 3 years but my 03 estate is fine and I've had that for 3 years and done about the same amount of miles.
Done mine before this happened need to do my front one now
Bloody hell how did he not know. That's scary that guy was actually driving it around.
Done this on the other halfs front nearside today. No play, no noise just an annoying vibration at 60mph and a slight notchy feel that could only be felt with the disc off the hub. No idea how that happened. Warped from hitting a kerb hard maybe? Anyway No more vibrations!
Ciao Alan.. Mi serviva davvero questo video, devo cambiare i mozzi posteriori della mia FoFi , e pure i freni a tamburo. "Se puoi dai un video sui freni a tamburo." Ciao e buona giornata.😉😉 Hi Alan .. I really needed this video, I have to change the rear hubs of my FoFi, and also the drum brakes. "If you can give a video on drum brakes." Hello and have a good day
Got one to do on a mazda 6 and i reckon they are pretty much the same
Alan at what mileage would you change the cam belt on 2.0 litre 180 Bhp no no 5 mondeo ?
Hello from Australia 👍 Is the process similar for Focus ST225 rear bearings, looks easy to do at home
I would torque up the carrier bolts. I have had one fall out on a motorway! Recovered home as calliper had dug into mag wheel to stop forward travel. Could reverse though. Now I torque everything.
Your lucky. I've owned 3 mk3s over the past 15 years and done rear bearings on two of them at least twice and not once have I had the torx bolts come of as easy.
@chrismechanic2000
4 жыл бұрын
thats because some idiot has done them up to tight...
A little bit of heat when undoing those torx bolts perhaps. Regards Charles
I've done all mine over the years front and rear, only ever had an annoying hum coming from them, never had any play or grinding in any of them.I've never had new bolts with the rears bearing kits, always bought a set beforehand... should pull the sensor and studs out of the old one for spares.
Suprised it had any brake pads left or should I say wheel bearing support chocks... Must be pagid pads as they are as tough as the disc they press onto Nice to see the beer token skip getting higher
I have had mrk3 mondeo. Always wondered if those 4 torx bolts are strong enough for weight of wheel, disc, carrier. Calliper. Great videos by the way. Great.

It's not really the bolts that hold it per-se. They generate the clamping force between the two metal components and the coefficient of friction applied on those surfaces due to the clamping force holds it all together.
@tiredhub3270
2 жыл бұрын
asked myself the same question, so those 4 bolts carry weight of almost ~850 lbs?
@Cedo86
Жыл бұрын
@@tiredhub3270 They don't carry that weight, you can see that the bearing goes into the housing, bolts are there just to secure it doesn't come off, same thing with a wheel which goes onto the hub, it's not held by the nuts strictly speaking, that's why central bore of the wheel must match hub lip diameter.
@Cedo86
Жыл бұрын
@@zoidberg444 Friction for some part, main thing is that the parts come in or on one another, in this case bearing goes in to the carrier, just like the wheel goes onto the hub lip, with it's perfectly matched central bore, in case of the Mondeo it's 63.3mm.
Surprised you didn’t try and clean the head of the old bolts with a wire wheel or brush to try and relife them.
I had all mondeos from mk1 to mk4, thanks to you avoided mk5 luckily 😊 all petrol ,but mk3 2l was the best nearly immortal untill sili woman with texting on phone drive in my back,has to be withdrawn😭😭😭😭
Have you used a torq stick before for using air tools to torque up bolts like wheel nuts ... awesome bits of kit.
@alan4x
4 жыл бұрын
i only use torque wrenches for engine components, head bolts and big end bearings etc, everything else is with an air gun or using a breaker bar
Hi Alan please do a Focus C-MAX MK1 rear wheel bearing
Okay, I admit that the sound was quite bad. However - to be fair to the owner - I have to say that my MK3 from 2005 had a lot of noise from the wheels, probably because that particular model doesn´t have a lot of noise insulation. Sometimes I was also in doubt if the wheel bearings were bad on my car - simply because I wouldn´t have expected so much wheel noise from a mid-size car from 2005
Someone has had that brake disc off before. There should be a couple of those washers that bite into the wheel studs to hold the disc in place. It's why you didn't have to beat the disc senseless in order to get it off. Also NEVER do up steel wheel nuts with an air gun. If you get a flat tyre and need to change it with just a small wheel brace, you'll never be able to get them off. I hate it whenever I get new tyres and they do that.
we are at lunch at 12 oclock and home by 6 oclock would it be ok to test it at 9am and 3 pm
Not bug on copper grease this guy. If your going this far it dont hurt to apply a bit of copper grease

No thread lock in sight
Ford flange bolt heads are very soft.
Damn, I wouldn't be surprised if bearing flange would've separated when you whacked it with a hammer. Never seen that bad wheel bearing. I would guess that that mk3's rear end has done few odd moves because of that bearing. Would think driver would notice something like this and got alarmed.

90 to 130nm is 67 to 95 ft lb! That's way too high. On my Mk3 estate it's 63 ft lb or 85nm for alloy wheels. Even so, I tend to agree with you in that tight and nipped by hand should be more than enough. I also can't believe you didn't get new bolts with the new bearing. Must have been an ultra cheap kit.
