    Exactly. That's why the autopilot offerings from Tesla, Mercedes and others scare me. They aren't being handled by qualified technicians and engineers, they're handled by consumers, who are tempted to turn attention away. Remove the temptation. Tesla should recall the feature and reimburse the $2500-3000 the consumer spent on beta software.

    Yup. All these people are idiots. First the woman that pressed the accelerator instead of the brake and she and her husband said autopilot, then this guy. People are stupid and like to blame others. They didn't know that Tesla logs everything though. Also in this case Tesla contacted the owner multiple times so they could get the cars data manually, and he hasn't responded, I wonder why..... Same thing with the Prius and Jeep recalls, they were recalled not because there was something wrong, but because people are stupid. As a Model S owner I'm getting tired of terrible drivers that don't know they are bad drivers.

  • @soravulpis96

    Regarding the autonomous car / automatic liability question, I think the answer is simple. Once we get to a point where a blind person is allowed to operate that vehicle alone, that is the point where we are essentially saying "ok, the car can be completely relied on for the safety of its passengers and others around it". Until then the driver must share some type of responsibility, within reason of course. I think we will soon see some sort of automotive 'black box' becoming a requirement for all vehicles with an automatic mode. This will no doubt be driven by the car makers directly since they will soon be swamped by lawsuits for every crash involving an autonomous vehicle.

    #FLDQoftheD I think its strange that there are no real laws or barriers in place currently with the ever changing automatic driving features given that the roadway can be such a dangerous place and it would seem problematic to have half the population driving automatically which the other half is manually operating their vehicles. I kinda answered the question but more clearly stated it'll almost always be an accident to accident basis, way too many factors to place the blame on either side quite yet.

    Planes have auto pilot but that doesn't mean that pilots are sitting on their hands. Most still take off and land manually. They also continuously double check everything. Auto pilot is the wrong term, I think it should be called flight assist, taking care of many of the "smaller" aspects of the job.

    You're missing the point! It is a car that drives itself. There might be some flaws with it to begin with, but it's only getting better! Tesla have covered their asses in the mean time by telling people to not fuck around when they're in the drivers seat. Besides, if anything, people should be more cautious on the road when they have auto-pilot turned on.

  • @soravulpis96

    @soravulpis96

    ***** Those flaws have lead to deaths. All things aside, Tesla should not have offered the autopilot features at all in the first place. Rather, it should have stayed in house, tested by professional automotive and software engineers and vetted by every government agency and automotive NGO there is. I don't miss the point. Its a car that drives itself, and that is really dangerous. I would never trust a computer to take over control of a car until sometime in the future where they're ubiquitous and legislation forces me to hand over the wheel to the car.

    +Aquilles92 the point here is...dont include a feature in a product that is market ready if its tentative. How dumb is it to say "yeah, just dont mess with this feature too much, we are not sure ourselves if it works or not". if its not bulletproof, dont include the feature. Wouldn't the tesla be a great product without autodrive anyways??

  • @Aquilles92

    @Aquilles92

    8 жыл бұрын

    True. However, their deaths cannot be attributed solely to that feature in the car. In my opinion these drivers, may they rest in peace, chose not to be aware of the road despite company recommendations and caused their own death. What you find dangerous, others find marvellous and a true advancement in technology. Like yourself, I would't trust auto-pilot to to take over control of the car and if I did I would certainly not relinquish my awareness of the road and endanger myself, other occupants and other drivers on the road.

    Planes can use auto pilot because there is virtually nothing for them to run into while in the air. Pilots still have to take off, land and Taxi. And the autopilot can be increadably unreliable,(at least in the small planes my company uses) over compensating for cross winds, and drastically changing altitude, and generally doing going anywhere but where you tell it to go. In a plane accident if autopilot was enganged it's still the pilots fault (barring a complete mechanical engine failure). A Car has a lot more obsticles to worry about, and variable speeds to compensate for traffic, where as planes usually can be flown at one speed consistantly thorugout the entire trip. And like I have said before, this Autopilot for cars is only going to make drivers worse. Slower reaction times, less knowledge about what the car is doing, or how it works, is going to take it's toll. It will eventually come to the point where the driver has no idea how to compensate for a autopilot failure, such as counter steering for sudden oversteer, from driving on ice. The Driver should've been paying attention and compensated for the car's error. People today are too damn busy with there Digital lives, and cell phones that they are ruining driving for the people who enjoy it!

    Way too early to decide if autopilot is ready for primetime. Regardless, the driver should be ready in an instant to take control of the car. If society fails to use the systems as designed, The manufacturer, in this case Tesla is not to blame.

    I think autopilot is just going to be a big problem for car manufactures. With all the distractions like texting and emailing while driving already prevalent, now people can just blame the autopilot system instead of the own neglectful driving habits. And of course the manufactures will be the ones paying for it, i guess it is their own fault for putting it in their vehicles. The consumer will never admit to not paying attention. In my own opinion if you need autopilot to drive, than don't drive. I love technology just as much as the next guy, I don't need it too do everything for me.

    #FLDQoftheD "Do you think autopilot will take all the driving responsibilities away from the driver?" Answer: No I don't. Tesla has already explained that the driver is still responsible for the operation of the vehicle. It's kind of like a catch 22. While it provides the software that can in theory operate the vehicle without driver inputs, Tesla states that the feature is not intended to be used in such a manner. I think back to an episode where you were discussing Ford's Line Lock feature. It allowed the driver to perform burn outs, but Ford stated the performing burnouts could invalidate the warranty. Welcome to the garden. Features such these are the forbidden fruits. Legally they are non-culpable because they told drive not to used them in such a fashion. As much cars come equiped with features like autopilot, I forsee disclaimers buried in the owners manuals telling driving the feature isn't for autonomous driving. So should an accident happen they can we imformed. Much like Surgeon General's warning on cigarettes the expection is you use it at your own risk.

    If the driver is responsible then the driver is liable for the damages. If the car is responsible then the manufacture of the car is liable. If the manufacturer is liable for the crash then it will slam the brakes on all autopilot advancements do to risk of catastrophic lawsuits, but if the driver is liable then the driver must remain just as focused as if they were driving, defeating the point of autopilot.

    +#01DF01Seba Abdur-Rehmaan No. An experienced driver is safer than a computer. Computers crash, computers bug out. The Tesla freaks out if the color of the pavement changes FFS, not to mention it's not being able to understand double yellow lines. The human driver is more adaptable and can navigate changes in road condition more handily than a machine.
