This tutorial is absolutely as invaluable today as was when it was created 6 years ago! I just completed the replacement of this sensor, taking my time and following Brian's methods and instructions. The total job was under 4 1/2 hours, and that included a break for coffee with my wife (who is EXTREMELY pleased that I just saved us at least $1200!) This job was quoted as minimum $1200 from my mechanic, whom I rely on for 3/4 of my vehicles' service, so the cost for doing this has not diminished over the years. Take your time, use a bit of patience and keep track of all the screws and bolts. Special patience is needed when removing the pressure clips from the A pillars, but it CAN be done. Many many thanks to Brian for sharing his knowledge in order to successfully complete this repair!

9 yrs later, and you're still a life-saver.... at least a money-saver. Thanks a ton for this video. Did this in my garage in 3 hrs by watching this video. The job wasn't near as bad as people make it out to be. Btw, I lucked out as my 2011 has a keyed steering shaft/linkage. Thank you again!

I am a student and I've never been a person to do repairs on my car. However, this video was great. I did the whole job in about 6 hours and used only a set of socket wrenches and a flat head screwdriver (to pop stuff open). Honestly, the only problem I ran into was taking off and putting on the upper trim panels. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. It saved me over 500 dollars!

I got an estimate from a Ford dealership, and was told it would be minimum $1200 for my 2007 Mercury Milan. I explained to them what I assumed the issue was seeing it was a know issue, but instead they said they would need to first run a diagnostic on it first. I then went to a "mom and pop" shop in the neighborhood who has a good reputation. He told me he could do this job for $750. Then I stumbled on your video. Went to the same Ford dealership, bought the part you suggested for a itsy bitsy $25.88. Charged my laptop, got the socket sizes you gave, a drill, and got a loaner torque wrench from my local auto parts store. Needless to say, 4 hours later......ICE COLD AIR again. By no means am I a mechanic......but your video was SOOOOOO descriptive, I felt like a mechanic a Ford dealership!!! If you are ever in the Metro Detroit area, I will gladly treat you to cold case of beer!!!

This video has saved me over $1k. The shop wanted to charge $1400. I got the part for about $38. Might have gotten it cheaper if I shopped around. However, if you're not mechanically inclined, it can take a while. But on the opposite side, it is still doable, especially when it means fixing your ac in 95 degree weather without breaking the bank. I am an obese, out of shape woman and it took me all day to get it apart and I did need help at a few points. Also I have not put it back together yet. But getting the second power outlet unplugged was different in my car. It didn't have the little lever you pull to release and the tab was pointed downward so you couldn't see it to press it in (and it was hard to press). Plus my center console didn't seem to go as far back so it made it even harder to access. My mom was able to get it out though eventually. Then trying to disconnect the steering column was very difficult. I was able to unscrew one by hand but the second one was behind the brake pedal and hard to reach. So as an out of shape obese woman, it was hard to access. I also have short arms. My nephew was able to get under there and loosen it but it was still pretty difficult. Also needed him to get the bolt out after because of the awkward position. I also think this bolt was different than what was said in the video. I believe he said 12 mm but we got it off with a 10mm. My car didn't have the notches when you pulled the steering off so I'm a little worried about that when I put it back together. There was nothing to mark. My car also had the entire cluster trim as one piece with two extra bolts at the top that were kind of difficult to access but that needed taken out to remove it before accessing the cluster. I was not able to reach into the middle to reach the sensor because of my size, so I had to have my nephew do all of this for me. It was pretty difficult trying to instruct him what to do based on what was happening in the video. He's only 12 and doesn't know any of this either. I mainly needed him because he's small and has more strength than I do. He had a very difficult time getting the sensor out. Once he finally got the tab turned, it was very difficult to pull the sensor out. We tried pliers and even trying to push up on it with a trim tool. He eventually got it after almost giving up multiple times. Then it was difficult disconnecting the wire from the sensor. And we couldn't figure out where it was broken in the video to make this easier. I wish the video had shown it being broken off. But anyway he eventually got it. Now I'm at the point of needing to reinstall the dash but I just am feeling too weak and tired to get it lined up right to bolt into place. Also we don't have power tools. So after about 9 hours of this, I'm packing up and leaving it for tomorrow. I need to get an adapter to attach the sockets to our drill and hopefully that will make it easier to put things back together instead of trying to do it by hand. Good news though, I plugged in the wires to test it out and the AC is blowing cool!! So, this may end up being overall a 20 hour job with a bit of help from family, but point being is this video still helped us get here. If you're even slightly more knowledgeable or in shape, I'm sure it'll be a piece of cake. For reference onthe differences; my car is a 2010 Fusion SE.

Also thank you for the extra tips at the end they came in handy. Don't be scared if you are thinking of doing it and mine is a 2010 so some difference's but not complicated.

Just fixed our 2010 Fusion Hybrid using the information from this video and saved a ton of money. Our a/c stopped working and the couple of times that it did work the air wasn't very cold. Also the passenger side was warmer than the driver's side. Eventually it stopped working all together. We knew the compressor wasn't engaging in our hybrid because the ACC gauge wasn't moving very much when we turned on the a/c. It took us about 3 hours to get it done. The bolts behind the instrument cluster were a bit tricky to put back on. Thank you very much for posting this video.

Awesome video Brian...Just happened to my 2012 Fusion. Started out intermittent, brought to the dealer under my extended warranty and they said the AC worked fine...Then it quits 2 days later and I drive straight to the dealer with max AC setting blowing ambient...They took it for a ride with their scan tool and said it is in fact this sensor...Said it was a 12 hour job and would need it 2 days...Thankfully it's covered.

Great video! Can’t thank you enough. I got it done in 5 hours. AC is blowing ICE COLD now. Mechanic wanted to charge me 9 hours of labor for this job. You literally saved me a mortgage payment. Of note, a friend of a friend who is a Ford mechanic said I could get away with not disassembling the steering column. I followed all of your instructions step by step, but I did not remove the bolt for the steering column. I was still able to clear enough room out to get my hand in and swap out the sensor. My Fusion is a 2006. Amateurs attempting this repair may want to consider trying it my way first. I didn’t want to worry about lining up the steering column properly and applying the proper torque to that bolt. I don’t have a torque wrench that can apply 180 inch pounds. In the end, I got away with not messing with the steering column. Just something to consider for those attempting this in the future. But it’s not gospel and it’s probably better to follow these instructions to the letter. Good luck.

I did this on a 2012 (last version of this body style) today, and I have to say this is one of the best, if not THE best, how-to videos I have ever seen. Thank you so much! I'm relatively advanced when it comes to vehicle work, and I took my time. Total job, from getting tools out to putting the last tool away, took 3hrs 20mins. Note: the removal of the a-pillar is not easy. There is an aggressive brass clip which will not let go. You have to keep pulling and wiggling the a-pillar toward the seat (away from the windshield) to work the screw (that is in the clip) out of the plastic a-pillar. Ford designed the a-pillar cover (who know why?!) as a disposable piece, but if you are careful you can get this apart. You may have to re-form the brass clip because it will get mangled. For the 2012 model, there are only minor changes to the tutorial: 1. The removal of the upper steering column cover includes the frame around the instrument cluster 2. To remove the frame around the instrument cluster, there are three 7mm bolts that must be removed 3. Also, to remove that frame, disconnect the electronic harness and tubing for the odd small vent (if you have one). It unclips easily. 4. Finally, to remove that frame, pull the two edged TOWARDS you and not upwards as in the video. 5. The instrument cluster has a different and more simplistic connector on it. 6. Don't bother removing the bolt on the steering column. The slip joint is a few inches higher so make your witness marks there. One tip that will help with the job: Put blocks behind the rear wheels and put the shifter into Neutral. This will make it a LOT easier to get the column out.

Removal of the windshield pillar trim is a royal pain. It's meant to be broken and replaced, but if you do it right you can get the pillar trim off without breaking it; you just have to pull it in the right direction to get the trim to slip off of the screw. You will likely destroy the "aggressive brass clip" or otherwise bend the heck out of it. The part number is W711044-S403 if you find yourself in need of replacing it.

Thanks for the excellent video. Just replaced a bad sensor in my 2010 Fusion Hybrid, with 68k miles. A few differences on the hybrid, at least in 2010: - extra connector in the rear console to the 110V AC outlet- pull rear panel out at bottom and it will swing up and you can disconnect it - no splines on the steering column shaft- just 4 flats so easy to keep aligned, but mark it anyway - extra bracket and 13mm bolt on passenger side of center console- this bracket will hit the center tunnel when you rotate the dash so watch the wiring to avoid damage - instrument cluster is different- 2 screws at top hold the trim, and the lower clips pull out, not up. Then 3 screws hold instrument cluster, easy to remove and disconnect. - 3 connectors in passenger footwell- large one and 2 antenna connectors (radio and satellite) AC works great now!

Brian, I'm a retired heavy equipment mechanic so I now avoid working on anything if I can just pay to have it done. When my daughters 2011 Fusion failed the Evap Sensor, I was quoted 8 hours to do the job at $110 hr plus parts. So, facing a $1000 repair bill, I had to think about it for a few weeks before coming up with a plan. Well, I've never used anything other than hard knocks and service manuals to take on any repairs on cars and heavy equipment. Then thinking that I better not mess this dash up or cause more damage because my wife will give me another "I told you so". That's when I met with a modern world mechanic (young dude) and he said "just KZread it, I do it all the time". Yes, I gave him a hard time about using his IPhone to do his job but he said "fine then just sweat all summer, I don't care". Now the good part. Your video was outstanding and it simplified the job quickly for me and I'm now hooked on KZread stuff. Heck, I might even come out of retirement now and charge people $1000 bucks for these jobs. I figure I can make about $4000 per day. Great job Brian! I am a fan now.

Just want to say thank you. Our 2011 Ford Fusion SE lost a/c last summer and a shop quoted me $1,000 to fix it. This walk through was a life saver! 2011 model has small differences that people will be able to easily see and work around. Suggested to have a partner help reconnect the steering shaft, no bolt to hold it in place and it will need somebody to help lift the dash and slightly turn the steering wheel while somebody lines up the shaft and drops it in. 2 extra screws at the bottom after you remove the gauge cluster as well. Have a swivel joint and impact / drill handy.

Great video, it's just what I needed! Forscan showed my evap temp jumping around from -20 degrees C to +20 degrees C and the AC compressor cycle on and off intermittently when the temp value was high enough. Picked up a $35 part, and my son and I had the car fixed 1.5 hours later. We also enjoyed the fishtank part of the video that we joked around saying the same thing when working on our car (without the tank, of course)

I took way to long to do this on 2012 Fusion. Mine went out 2 years ago and I have been getting by with the resistor bypass while the part has been riding around in my glove box, so with the quarantine in effect I figured it was time. Took me about 5 hours but I ran into issues trying to remove the A pillar trim and had to locate another video so I didn’t break it in half. I also had some issues with wiring for my aftermarket remote start. Only other thing I will add is 2012 Ford Fusion has 3 additional screws at top of instrument cluster not included in video. Thank you sir for the video, it is definitely a money saver! Well done!

Dude I just took my 2012 Fusion sport. I’d get cold air then hot air. Firestone has a $9.99 AC check and it was done little valve looking stem. They replaced it at no cost and then AC was blowing cold the whole time. I did tell them after to the recharge even tho it started blowing cold air. Had them remove the old stuff and put in new Freon which I didn’t mind at all. I’m just glad it wasn’t a HUGE issue.

I was quoted $600-$900 to do this at different garages. Backyard mechanics want $400-500 which I think is a bit high, but they have never done this before. Btw - I have a 2007 Mercury Milan which is the same car as the Fusion. I watched several videos on how to do this and I did not remove the steering column as I saw in other videos. I just adjusted it out and low for the process. I also did not fully remove the gear shifter. I pulled the cable out of the slot, but did not unhook the linkage and I laid it to the drivers side and it was fine that way. Everything went well but I do suggest something a bit lower than a milk crate as the dash sits too high to get my arm over top of it. Once I had something a bit lower it was easy as anything to swap it out. This is definitely something that anyone could try. I would suggest having interior body trim removal tools as you will damage your interior with anything else. I bought a set from Harbor Freight for $6, along with a pick set for $2. I did mangle one clip on the window pillar so I am getting a new one for $2 @ Ford. It took me about 2.5 hours of work to get the dash loose and 45 min to get it back together with the process I did. Everything is back together and working fine now. Just watch the vid completely get all the tools you will need together. Then watch and pause as you take the car apart step by step. Once you are done, do the same in reverse as you do not want to forget a connection or where a screw belongs. Good Luck to you and thank you for posting the Video Ford Tech. Side note - while I was in there I pulled the Stereo and fixed the dead screen on it with some solder as seen in other videos for these cars. It's a common problem with a very easy fix. About 20 min of work for removal repair and install total.

I also identified each electrical connector and checked them off as they were re-connected. One note is that my Fusion has a telescoping steering wheel and there were no splines at the floor when I pulled it out. It turns out that the splines are about 10 inches higher up so be sure to mark it up there.

Thank you so very much! Same thing. We have a 2012 Fusion Hybrid and the A/C just stopped working about 3 weeks ago. We were due for other service and asked our mechanic to check it out. I trust my mechanic whole heartedly, but with a $700 quote just for labor plus $40 for the part, it was not something we felt we needed to fix right away. I am confident we can do this together in a few hours. Just bought the part and the tool (for pulling interior clips) from Amazon . I'll let you all know how it goes later this weekend. Thanks again!

FordTechMakuloco, this channel is a huge help for me, and has saved me a lot of money. My check engine light would not turn off, and I kept getting a warning about my fuel inlet. Your video on how to "fix" the warning worked perfectly. On the other hand, after purchasing my 2011 Ford Fusion, when the warranty expired, my air conditioning would quit working at random times. After a while the pattern of this issue seemed to happen when the outside temperature was hot, so it usually happened in the summer. The temporary "fix" for this, which was discovered unintentionally, is if the air conditioning stops working, I have to open the hood of my car and let it shut hard. For some reason this kicks on the air conditioning, as long as it's "on" before slamming the hood. I took my car to a dealership to see what the cost would be to have it fixed, and it's somewhere in the range of $800-$900 due to having to take out the entire dash, which seems to be the issue in this video. They said that the sensor needs to be replaced. I am not knowledgable in vehicle mechanics, and aside from changing my own oil and flat tires, I'm lost on what to do. In this video, are you fixing the same thing as what the dealership suggested what may be my problem? I look forward to any insight or response you can give. And I sincerely appreciate your channel. If I lived close to your shop, I'd rather pay you more to fix my vehicle than me attempt to do it myself.

Outstanding!!! Thanks for sharing your expertise. So spot on and easy to follow. I was four hours start to finish, including breaking down the rest of the center console and cleaning every. Notes for a 2010 Milan V6 Premier: There is an extra bracket on the passenger's side of the center lower dashboard that will get in the way of swinging the dash out. It will bend out of the way though, just bend it back. The steering knuckle is a 7 MM socket, and it is a square peg and not the spline that the Fusion showed. Super easy to match back up. Thanks again for an outstanding job on your video!!!

i have a 2012 ford fusion with 79000 miles. never had an issue with the car aside from stereo occasionally flips out. today when leaving a parking lot my A/C flipped from ice cold to boiling hot. now mind you the air conditioner did not stop working as that would have produced outside temp air blowing from vents. this thing switched temp from max cold to as hot as it could get. knob still on cold, max ac recirc and ac buttons all still pushed. turned car off back on poof ice cold ac for about 3 minutes. you can literally hear it switch from ac to heat. once again the air conditioner DOES NOT STOP WORKING!! it just switches from cold to hot on its own. i do not have automatic climate control i have all manual knobs and push buttons. while driving, sitting or anything in between the car switches temps. while driving down the road, i can super fast blip the key off/on long enough to make the computer to freak out and tell me the traction control doesnt work (it does) and also "check breaking system" ( also nothing wrong with it, just a result of the key blip). doing that will return ac to cold for a few minutes. in the course of the 4 mile trip home i blipped the key 20 times? give or take. each flip of the key returned the ac to cold for around 30 seconds to 4 minutes. if anyone has a clue whats going on that would be awesome!! please help so i dont have to set it on fire and drive it over a cliff!!

Just donated $10 as this video saved me about $900. I'd like to donate more but I'm not sure it gets to the right guy. Either way, thank you. In less than 2 hours I took it apart and got it back together. To answer my own questions, two ways to do this in 15 minutes. 1 remove the windshield, lift the vent, break the plastic and needle nose pliers it out. Then have whoever reinstall the front windshield. Or option 2 use razors to cut a square lift the vent break the inside connecting plastic and you might be able to fanagle the evap sensor out. Then super glue the plastic in place. This would require another person to help guide you. Or, just follow the video as it's not that hard.

Thank you for posting this video! I am working on a 2006 Fusion that will not cycle the compressor. Low pressure drops all the way to 14psi and the evaporator freezes up. I thought perhaps there was a restriction in the system but the high pressures are normal. I looked all over for a low pressure cycling switch but did not find one. I checked the Mitchel wiring diagram for the manual A/C system (which this car has) and the diagram did NOT show this sensor, but it DID show it in the EATC wiring diagram. Hmmm... Did some searching on Fusion A/C issues and found this video. Ah ha! I fired up IDS and data-logged the A/CT sensor pid and it read 198 degrees. No wonder the PCM isn't cycling the compressor! So apparently the reverse can also happen. The sensor can short internally and read excessively high evap temps, causing the PCM to keep the compressor engaged freezing the evaporator. This will NOT set a code as there were no DTCs present. Just a note for anyone else who runs into this.

I have a 07 Mercury Milan. Basically the same car with the same problem. I paid to get that sensor fixed about a year ago (worked great) and now the sensor is already fried again. I think if you really wanted to save time and a sore back and don't care if the cars plastics get damaged... You could just open the top dash storage door... cut the bottom out of the storage container with a hot knife or something to cut it... reach in and change out the sensor.... and put some type of heavy-duty tape to cover the hole you made in the top dash storage container. It's not the correct way of doing it. But sometimes on an almost 20 year old car... you really just want to get the dumb thing to work again. I never sell my vehicles. I just drive them until they're not worth a damn anymore lol. Hope that helps someone that can't afford to get a dash pulled or their back is bad.
