Honda Civic Type R versus Ford Focus RS Mountune MR375 the second coming.
PH had already tested the previous generation Civic Type R against the Focus RS, but now with the FK8 on the scene, we had to put it up against the Mountune upgraded Focus RS. Can the best front-wheel-drive hot hatch on offer today upset the all-wheel-drive Focus RS?

One big difference this review does not cover is how the RS with its rear axle torque vectoring can POWER OVERSTEER. Fast into an apex, throttle mid corner and the car ROTATES, it's incredible. Type R or FWD fans in general are doing themselves a disservice by not driving an RS or any RWD car hard to exploit its handling.

The Focus RS is way way too stiffly sprung giving a really rough, bouncy ride that will loosen your fillings if your not careful. Type R in comfort mode rides surprisingly well, really comfortable, and is the better car here.

I don’t know if I’d say they were similarly powered when the focus has 60hp and 80lb ft of torque over the Civic. I’d take the Focus simply because of the AWD and styling as the civic is a bit over the top styling for me

  • @kolokolok

    @kolokolok

    6 жыл бұрын

The focus has 20-25% drivetrain loss given the AWD system while the civic has 10% loss only as its a FWD with a front engine, so at 20% loss the Focus makes 300hp and 281 at 25% whereas the civic makes 288; therefore, power reaching the ground is within 10hp difference only. The civic is lighter as well.

+eComTrade Lol did you just pull that out of your ass and hope it's going to stick? The Focus is slower in in-gear accelerations because of it's longer gearing compared to most cars in this class, but that's about it. It destroys the Honda 1/4, it destroys the Honda 0-60. The only cars that are significantly faster are the A45 and the RS3, both cars ridiculously more expensive. On track, in the dry, a lot of cars in this class are evenly matched (that includes this Honda), some magazines have lapped RS quicker on some tracks and vise versa. They are all usually between 0.5 and 2 seconds of each other. So no, the Focus isn't particularly slow for it's class. In fact considering it's price, it's one of the fastest-per-buck cars on the market today that in addition to being fast in the dry, is also fast in the wet you retarded dumbfuck. Not to mention being the only car offering true rear-bias fun.

Both these cars are a fantasy for me, but I've been looking at reviews on both for a while now, and I'd probably go with the Civic. It's close, the AWD of the focus and slightly more power is appealing, however that head gakset issue (I've seen a video on a 2017 model too where one wen) plus the inside of the Civic seems a bit nicer for me. After all inside the car is where you'll spend most of your time.

Supposedly muffler delete is about as good as it good as it gets. Remus do an exhaust for it but really it's down to your taste. Not for me personally. For sure the CTR is ironically not showy in noise to looks. Conflicting times. The focus could be argued over does this. Sometimes you don't want the attention or noise.

It's the biggest compliment that can be given to Honda that other popular hatches need the extra power in bhp and torque to keep pace and try attract customers. Ford do not have the greatest reputation with reliability in their power units however. German rivals can have more power but it's all rear wheel based or AWD and the jury is out on their reliability.

I know I drive a focus st, so yes I'm a Ford fan, but I do love the new Honda civic type R. The Honda looks like it'd eat the focus on a track as it's clinical in what it does. The focus usually wins reviews due to its playfulness. I buy a hot hatch for its fun factor. So I'd take the focus as a daily. But if I was buying a hot hatch to win time attacks, Honda all day.

Living in a place that has actual winters, the only real choice here would be the RS. In canada it is a bit more expensive but it comes with a set of winter wheels/tires + heated seats and steering wheel. There is also the fact that the type-r is having transmission issues (grinding gears) and oil consumption problems which in my opinion is a deception for a brand like honda..

  • @ddrenth

You bring up Type R gear issues while the RS is blowing engines? Agree with you about 'actual winters'...however, I am driving a Type R with winter wheels and tires and finding it no different than any other Civic in winter conditions. Easy.

FWD actualy works well enough during snow since it "pulls" the car and engine weight rests on the driven wheels. Dont expect to retain grip while flooring it in snow, not even a Subaru can do that. And the transmission issue is just a little error with syncros. Guess some find it worse than blowing up the 2.3

PH has always shown to be Honda biased when it comes to this duel. After spending article after article claiming the RS is nothing but a slow ass party trick on wheels that isn't meant for track use, it would be pretty shameful showing figures that concluded both cars are pretty evenly matched (in the dry) as shown by other outlets. Which would be more fun? 'Serious' FWD understeering boredom or so called 'gimmicky' rear AWD-bias with power on oversteer. I know which car i chose, and i know how many Type-Rs were faster than me past summer on track (none lmao).

I don't get how it's concluded that the RS comes unstuck on track? My exploits on track in it have upset far 'superior' machinery, I find it a hoot to drive on track. It turns in like nothing else. Only gripe is its 100kg too heavy.

Ford has a great tradition of making superbly handling cars, but with this Type, it’s met it’s match, I feel. For a day’s blast, the Ford is gonna be just that, a blast, but for everyday driving, the refinement, the practicalities, plus track day mastery, the infinitely more reliable HONDA will rule the day. The thing’s built in the UK.....with BREXIT worries, we need all the help we can get........I’d absolutely love the Type R! Check this out! kzread.info/dash/bejne/lp2Wpc6blJC6qJM.html

Ponygt 662 the hatch space (boot as you call it) suffers cause the AWD. Something had to give. This car wasn't designed or intended to be AWD. They gave people what they've been wanting for years and it was a proper AWD powertrain in a RS. To scold the engineers is silly. If Honda got their head out of their ass and went the same route by putting a AWD system in the Civic hatch space would likely suffer as well. AWD > hatch space

I think you went against your own video... its pretty clear to see which is the better car just by watching your face. The RS had you smiling and excited, while the Type R you showed no emotions at all. The RS smokes the Type R in a drag race. Maybe the Type R is better on the track, but lets be honest.... How many of us are going to a track with our cars? Not many! For a everyday driver the RS is much more fun, while the Type R will be a bit more refined with the ride, the RS is the way to go... And just incase you think i'm a Honda hater.... I drive a 2012 Honda Civic SI... It's an awesome car... But I would choose the RS over the Type R if I was buying a new car.

Typical. Honda does is again. Honda makes a Civic with 306bhp, FWD, for 34K MSRP....... It's competitor makes a 350bhp, AWD, for 41K MSRP...... Not only is the Civic better, we go as far here to bring in a modified Focus with 25 more HP, obviously for even MORE money, and still........can't trump the Honda.... And this is not even factoring in the everyday things in owning one for longer than a track test like reliability, build quality, fuel consumption, etc.... Honda ftw 🤘.......this is why I'll always buy Honda. I'll never buy an American car over a Honda. Only reason I have an old Chevy truck is cause I couldn't find a Ridgeline or Tacoma for 5 grand 😂

Blake Swan Truth be told the rarer more hardcore FK2 Type R was better than the Focus RS Mk3 never mind this latest FK8 edition, however I hate the look of the FK8 and it sounds rubbish, to be brutally honest!! I would say that If it hadn’t had been for a couple of biased reviews from Top Gear and Co... about how fwd are rendered useless in wet etc those who discounted the Type R would have realised it’s actually fantastic if they’d bothered to test drive it and now Fk2 production finished and done. Truth be told again, the Type R does perfectly fine in wet. I’d also add that since the FK8 launch, a lot of people have realised the previous FK2 Type R is absolutely brilliant so now there’s two Focus Rs rivals interesting times for the hot hatch sector especially with the Megane Rs on the horizon. I’ll add I’m hearing and reading more and more hot hatch enthusiasts waking up and smelling the coffee - Civc Type R....it’s a joy to drive and brutally fast and nothing to prove. Having said all that I do like the RS but you can’t underestimate the Type R.

  • @9frankg
