Wow a MILLION views! Thanks everyone for watching! I want to address a few things that people keep commenting on. Many of you are right about the vtec in the Type R. It does have vtec, but it doesn't operate in the way that I worded it in the video. It is used to boost torque in lower RPMs to keep smooth torque delivery as the turbo kicks in. Also, the c-diff controller in the STI only controls the centre diff, and yes as may of you have stated, you are better to leave it in "auto" mode. (Which I and Colin did do, I was only trying different things, to create more oversteer). As for the understeer in the STI, sadly this is the reality. Yes, as many of you have said, you can aggressively flick the car in and get it into a bit of a slide, but what I was demonstrating in the video, is that its NOT EASY. The Type R and the Focus RS rotate easily in stock form. Also despite what you saw in the drag race video, we did many takes and got broadly the same result. So whatever launch you saw in any of the cars, thats just the footage I chose for one reason or another. The reality is, the Focus RS wins off the line, followed by the STI, and the type R eventually pulls on the STI. That was consistent. Thanks for watching!!

Got some advice for people. 1. Buy what you like 2. If you don’t like something and someone else does, let them enjoy whatever their hearts desires without getting bent out of shape 3. Each of these cars are great and whatever suits you, great. 4. Stop arguing like 13 year old about what’s better, writing paragraphs to each other 5. I own an STI and driven my buddies Type R. They are both great cars. I love you all ✌🏼

Not everything is about how much power can you make in stock internals, it’s about how it feels stock period because that is how the manufacturers intended to feel anyways.

The differential switch in the sti doesn’t “send power to the rear”, or the front. It controls the degree of slip in the center differential. So maybe one could say that with it switched all the up to “lock”, then you have 50:50 front/rear. But you can’t control how much torque goes to the front or rear.

Considering the ancient technology inside the STi, I'm actually VERY impressed that it's still able to keep up with the latest and greatest technology inside the RS, Type R and VW R. Very cool. The thing is, Subaru doesn't do straight line driving so they don't really mind (or care) that these other 3 cars are killing the STi on dry pavement/asphalt tracks. Carry on. Great reviews!

Another thing to point out that is that this video was recorded at the Cayuga TMP, racetrack in Ontario, Canada. It has two LOOOONG straights that clearly gives the Focus RS an advantage - hence the laptime. If this was taken at a more balanced race track like Shannonville, the results would be different. But then again if you look at the Nurburgring laptime set by the new Type R (7:43.8) vs. the new Focus RS (8:06), the difference is also huge.

EA M The engine needs an update as well. The EJ257 has been in use since the 2004 model year with very little change. It has proven unreliable for the duration of its run and still Subaru continues to slap it in their top of the line car and call it good. It is time for the EJ257 to either be majorly upgraded to accommodate a reliable 350+ hp in stock form or be replaced with an engine that is up to the task.

EA M The inherent design and harmonics of the EJ257 and the boxer in general lead to poor oiling on the top side of the piston and imperfect harmonics. The EJ207 is better because the equal length manifolds help even out exhaust pulses which helps reduce stress at the cost of boxer rumble.

So - I just purchased STi Final Edition in WR blue. Before that, I was test driving all three of them three times each as I had hard times to decide… to cut a long story short, to me it comes down to what you want to use the car for. In my garage the STi will be a 3rd car, being used seldom on track days and more often on mountain roads, on sunny and wet days. Therefore the super sticky, real 4 - wheel drive, the frenetic brakes, the very special boxer engine layout and sound, combined with true heritage and pedigree made it for me. Shame on me, but I also think it looks best 🙃.

The ST has proven to be an absolute riot almost everytime I drive it, gets reasonable fuel economy, and has been quite mechanically sound. Here in Ottawa, the ST and RS are wayyyyy less common than the others. GTI's, WRX's...they are as common as a Corolla by comparison. Engine is really the only thing outdated about the car & To be honest it's kind of what attracted me to make my purchase before things become a little less analog. But the improvement in this chassis is incredible compared to previous chassis. When I chat with other subaru owners at the track, they are completely surprised with the times I'm able to put down on a near stock car while they would have spend thousands on suspension and power mods to get their car to handle the same way. It needs more power to satisfy today's consumer market because 300hp isn't enough anymore and people just want something new. What the majority of people don't appreciate is the chassis and the fine tuning that a spec sheet doesn't easily tell you. If I were making my purchase today between the CTR & STI it would be tough.... I love the CTR and I've thought about selling my STI for one, but I have a special bond with mine.

@Retrojon 5 The real shame with the Sti isn't so much the price, it is that is slowly but surely just stopped being an Sti. An Sti used to be the rally car for the street, which is why it didn't use to have such stiff springs and 19inch wheels and all that. It's not an Sti anymore, it's just a lame sports sedan. I really hope that Subaru will return to the WRC and that the Sti will once again be inspired more by that, rather than by driving on the Nürburgring.
