Carb choked down to no-power range, coolant spraying like rain in a a hurricane, no trans oil and a un-diagnosed noise rattling the rust from the floor holes as the door flies open on the return home. ...Is this much fun even legal???! Thanks for the memories of my everyday youth. Keep on keepin' on.

I too have a 1963 Ford Falcon with the 170 and automatic trans. They are extremely reliable, but as you clearly showed in this video, parts, and most importantly anything rubber are super difficult to find, I've found O'Reilly's is definitely the best place. I also run diesel oil in mine, Shell Rotella T5 10w-30, never had any problems. I installed copper core #46 Autolite sparkplugs and they've been great too. When you install the new radiator make sure to also clean out the heater core, I tried to replace my heater core with a new one from O'Reilly's and it didn't fit quite right, so I used the garden hose and ran water through the old one until the water came out clean and reinstalled it. Careful with the heater box under the dash, the entire thing is made out of a fiberglass material, they've all became super brittle over the years, and the clips that hold it together are stronger than Lou Ferrigno. Lol Best of luck with it! Let's keep these old birds in flight!

63 1/2 Falcon. Mid year refresh. Lowered roof, sloped rear window. They offered a Sprint option which received the full 260 V8 drive train that was to be introduced in the Mustang in April, 1964. Had one of these in the 70’s. Dropped in an R Code HO 289, Paxton Supercharger, top loader 4 sp, and a narrowed 9” rear end. Dang, wish I had it today.

The first car I drove was the 1962 Falcon, I don't remember the trim level, but it had the 170 with the two-speed automatic. Two-door sedan. Black with red interior. Loved that little car. After I traded it off, My dad got a 289 from a wrecked Ford on the rear end. The front was untouched. Man, would that have been fun with a 289 in it? Damn!

Bad vibration coming from, it seems, the u-joints or the rear-end. You are lucky that 2-speed trans is air cooled, as hardly any fluid registered on the dip-stick. Keep at it and you'll have a sweet little car, that will get 25-30 mpg.

I use to sneak out at night, put in gear rolled it down driveway into the street then start it up and go. I was 17 then. Plus gas was 35 cents a gallon.

Don't worry about the gas tank. Early Mustang tanks will fit, and are highly available and cheap. Early Mustangs used a LOT of Falcon parts. And yes, you're right about the brake hoses. The inner liner gives out, and blocks the line from passing fluid. Old school wheel bearing grease was a thick yellowish looking stuff. The stuff I'm getting these days is red and thinner, but the grease seals are a lot better now. Sounds like the rear end is toast. Would be interesting to pull off the cover and look for shrapnel.

I used parts from a Falcon like yours on my '65 Mustang, six cylinder 4 lug 13" wheels. I needed a front hub and got the Falcon parts from the junk yard. The early Mustangs were Falcon based. I think the brake hardware for a '641/2 ,'65 six cylinder should work. The '66 six cylinder Mustang had 14 inch wheels so it may be different. I had a 200 cube six cylinder that looked exactly the same. Rebuilt carbs were readily available for that engine. I think the 144 cubic inch engine ('61 Falcon) was similar but had fewer main bearings. The 170 and 200 had improved bottom ends. My father had a '61 Falcon wagon (silver)and a '62 Comet wagon (red). My father in law had a '63 Comet wagon (black cherry) .Very popular cars way back. By the way ,my '65 200 six engine was red orange . I replaced it with a "73 200 six which was blue.

My first car was the 64 Ford Falcon Ranchero with the 170 engine and 3 speed manual shift. Bought it used in 1969 and drove it to hell and back but the faithful old engine always performed. Always started, easy to work on and when the starter went out we would push it down the street, jump in, jam it in gear and pop the clutch! Sold it in 1971 but watching you work on it brings back a lot old memories. I replaced the 3 speed transmission several times but the clutch and engine never failed. I wasn't surprised when you got your engine running knowing how dependable the 144 and the 170 engines were.

That engine brings back memories. In 1968 my Dad bought a 64 Comet 4 door sedan. It had a 200 cube six but we later put a 170 in it after the 200 wore out. Myself and two brothers all learned to drive in that car in the 70's. It was a manual transmission 3 on the tree. I have a video of it running in 2017. Dad passed away in 2018 and the Comet is still in the family. Pretty rough shape now. It still runs but not driveable now.

The coils are actually 6 volts. While the key is held in the start position it gets 12 volts for quicker start the when it starts and the switch returns to the run position the 12 bots switches to the resistor and the resistor drops the voltage to 6 volts. Lot of people don’t know how this works. This is why you don’t leave 12 volts to the coil. 12 volt coils have internal resistors.

@@kenswitzer4133 Nah, pretty standard to have points ignition to run at ~7v. It's to stop the points burning out early. I grew up with mazda, the same, it's pretty standard worldwide. Ditch the points and go electronic and you can throw out the resistor and get 12V coils. They all crank bypassed at full volts but once running a relay cuts it and passes through a ballast resistor to 7 -9v. It's not to save the coil, it's to save the points. Chiming in as another aussie that loves falcons. Yeah we didn't get rid of them until 2017, that old 6 cyl was dragged kicking and screaming into the modern age with 4L DOHC variable valve timing turbo tech. Some of the 1970s v8s go for $1m and there's no such thing as a cheap vintage falcon around here.

Love me some 60s fords. FYI, The resistor in the ignition coil circuit (pink wire at ignition switch on RUN side) is not there to prevent the coil from burning up. It’s there to prevent points from burning up. When key is in start position and starter is cranking, the resistor is bypassed to provide full 12 volts to coil for a hotter spark during cranking. Power for coil come from the I terminal on the starter relay during cranking. When engine starts and key is released to the RUN position power for coil comes from IGN switch through the pink resistor wire and reduces voltage to coil to around 8 volts. The reduced voltage reduces arcing damage to the points in order to get more life from them. Without the reduced voltage to coil the points would burn up every few thousand mile. Chrysler used an external ballast resistor to do the same thing. Not sure what GM did…and who cares it’s a GM😉

right away I am impressed.....ya went to spraying points of wrenching!! It floors me that there are so many will it run videos where the mechanic insists of wrenching dry fittings??? Go figure....but you are ahead of the curve in my book. Fords used a nichrome wire with fixed resistance and its function was to limit voltage to the points....the coil can sustain a 12 volt load ok but the voltage for the points has to be held down. The voltage feed to the coil is two phased, in start position of the switch the voltage is "bypass" and when in "run" or aka "ignition" it is thru the nichrome wire.

Originally buckets and console- as you can see, the console brackets are welded to the trans hump. You could get a bench in the hardtop, or order buckets & console. Mid year 63... when the hardtop was introduced... they also changed the battery tray location to allow the 260 V8 to be squeezed in. In '65, the two speed auto was dropped for the C4. An easy upgrade. There's nothing wrong with the 170 six, but a 7 main bearing 200 is a drop-in, and is a pretty bulletproof engine.
