In this video we attempt to return my gandpas rare 42 model ford that has only 28,000 miles by driving it 100 miles thru the tennessee mountains . It has been parked for 16 years and is in really good shape for its age because it has been stored inside . it has a flathead inline 6 , and a 3 speed manual on the column . This car is a real time capsule.

This comment is absolutely true. I have two sons, one is 12 and one is 9 and I'd LOVE for them to be into learning anything about cars like I did from a friend's dad who owned a shop after I got ripped off by Sears, but I can't pry them away from their Playstation and Xbox. BTW, I am a cancer survivor and I wasn't supposed to be able to have kids, and I'm also the first in six generations to have two boys because it's always been two girls and a boy.

What a thrill for Ralphie! My mother taught me how to drive a stick in a 1972 Volvo 144. It was probably 1977/78 and I was 8 or 9. Not long after that she suffered a massive stroke and we lost her in 1980. So glad we made happy memories together when we could! 🥰

The amount of rust in the filter means that the tank is really bad, and I would think the fuel lines are pretty well full of rust now. That would cause the problems you are having with fuel delivery.

  • @70ixlr86

Carbs need their accelerator pumps to maintain and increase fuel delivery when opening the throttle. Any time the vehicle requires more throttle, the accelerator pump is used to compensate for reduced intake vacume. Older carbs had leather pump diaphragms, and they dry out, become worn, and suffer from dirt. Carburation is becoming a lost art, and its shameful. At its root, carburation is the science used for so many things, including fuel injection.

From the amount of RUST particulate that keeps plugin the fuel filter, I would have to think that the fuel tank is rusted beyond being usable, back then these fuel tanks were made of steel not Galvanized like later years. The only way to stop all the trash making it`s way into the carburetor is to replace the fuel tank, then flush the fuel through the mechanical pump before connecting to the carburetor, definitely install the largest fuel filter you can to protect the most important component of metered fuel delivery, the Carburetor. It would be a good idea to remove the carburetor and rebuild it also. If not, you will continue to have starting & drive ability issues with the car due to the rusted fuel tank. Love your videos. You have a beautiful family, may God bless.

We didn’t have access to or resources to run to the parts store, so many Saturdays were spent in the two local junk yards pulling parts to make sure that everyone could get to work or school on Monday morning. I’m 76 now and rarely attempt to do anything on the modern cars I drive. Rest assured that you are creating memories that your kids will cherish long after you are gone. Happy New Year. I believe the vacuum tubes on the radio need a little warm up time. It usually takes a little while, if it does work. Could be a speaker issue like you said though. There used to be a oil filter conversion kit that actually used a roll of toilet paper if I wasn't dreaming I saw it. 😆

Hello happy New Year's to you and your family sleepersdude. Man that was awesome seeing Ralphie driving grandpa's car. That said that you couldn't drive it all the way back to Grandpa's house. But it definitely was a good try. Ralphie had my laughing in the video at 9:10 trying to open the bottle & in the video at 16:26 that was cool watching you driving with your shoes on man. What was really awesome was to see Grandpa driving his 42 Ford with his grandson & his great-grandson in the car with him. That is a great memory right there & an awesome picture too. You know I really love the end when Ralphie volunteered really really fast to wear your flip-flops & watching you put them on his feet was cool to watch. I am surprised you didn't have them on. Sleepersdude question? Do Ralphie like wearing flip-flops? It was cool seeing him having your flip-flops on his feet. My son would do the same thing. He will go put my Flip flops on which is a sz15 on his feet which is a sz 9 & then go try to wear them to the store and people are staring at his feet & saying OK. The only good part about it is he has a very wide feet so it takes up the Gap space in the front but the back part is just way too long but it's funny to see him trying to walk in them. Happy New Year's to you buddy and I'm looking forward to supporting your channel for 2022.

That car has a vacuum fuel pump and wipers and carb produces vacuum not very well when they get old ! My 53 Ford when it acted up I would wrap the fuel pump with a towel and pour water on it to cool it down but eventually I installed an electric pump and electric windshield wipers and boy what a difference that made ! I paid $75 for it in 1974 and drove it for 10 years , I should have never sold it !

Many old car radios had a power converter because the tubes they used required much higher voltages than the 6 volt battery provided. Those converters made a buzzing sound when the radio was turned on. Not sure about the 42 Ford but it probably had that system.

It warms my heart to see Ralphie and the two girls so enthusiastic about fixing up these old cars. It won't be too much longer before Ralphie is turning wrenches and making repairs on his own. I would really like to know, of all the cars you have featured in these videos which one is his favorite? You should ask him on camera -- I would really like to hear what he has to say! Maybe he likes something that you do not have. So many kids his age simply have no interest. That is a pretty sweet '57 Chevy your dad has in his garage. Since my old beater is a '55 210, I am partial to the Tri-Fives. You are so fortunate to have such a fabulous family.
