From Wikipedia
The Ford Fairmont is a compact car produced by Ford Motor Company for the North American market. Introduced for the 1978 model year, the Fairmont was produced in several bodystyles until it was replaced by the Ford Tempo for the 1984 model year. The Fairmont was the successor to the Maverick; its Mercury counterpart was the Mercury Zephyr, which replaced the Comet.
The Fairmont and Zephyr marked the introduction of the long-running Ford Fox platform, used for a wide variety of later models. Those most closely related to the Fairmont included the 1980--1982 Ford Thunderbird, the 1981--1982 Ford Granada, the 1979--1993 Ford Mustang (and 1979--1986 Mercury Capri), and the 1982--1987 Lincoln Continental.

I grew up in a canary yellow 1979 Fairmont 4 door,my parents drove it until it was falling apart then sold it to my uncle who drove it for years as well.
When I attended college in Sarasota, Florida in 1983, my church had an elderly guy attend, who was in his 80s and he would drive his ‘79-‘83 Gen Ford Fairmont station wagon from Pennsylvania to Florida every winter. I would say to him “That’s a really nice Ford you’re driving and he would always say, “It’s not a Ford.” “It’s a can’t afford.” And I think that was his take on the current state of inflation since, by the time you’re 80, you’re still living in an older economy and inflation is still a big surprise each decade as you get older. Brother Shuey was a good man.
Late grandpa had a '79 Fairmont wagon back in the 80s, but it was a plainer model. It had the inline 6 and A/C, but that was about it. Car was a tank, never any issues.
Nice! My aunt used to have a 1979 Ford Fairmont that she bought for $800, it was a four door sedan.
That treo ringtone.. Brings back so many memories
I’m old school, and that’s cool!!

I'm old school too. And Fairmonts are NOT cool. Jeez.....They weren't cool then and they're not cool now.

EF ANDMK Its cool to me because it’s a very nice survivor, I don’t see stuff like this because I live in the rust belt. Everyone here would go nuts over that car whether it’s cool or not.
Cool wagon! From Montana to my garage in Virginia. Now has a Twisted Wedge headed 302 running in the 12's. I'll post a video of it one day.
When I was a teen we had a new 1978 Futura. After 2 years of ownership, Dad replaced the cat with a "test tube". Then punched the filler and we used leaded gas going forward. The 200 Six was still anemic.
I love the old 70s buzzer! It just makes me happy when i hear it :)
This car brings back memories. My mom had an '81 but it was not a Squire.
Ah, the days of when station wagons were real station wagons back in the day.....
Love that Fairmount wagon
You honestly have some of the best finds I've ever come across :)
Nathan you have a good personailty.. You are cool in my book and have a very good selection of cars!!!
My parents used to have a Fairmont...I guess that's why I grew up to be a GM guy, lol. Actually, I have a secret soft spot for these unloved boxy Fairmonts, like I do for the early K cars. Thanks for the memories!
that fairmont is awesome!
We drove one of them in 1987 from Mich to Florida me and my brother who were 11 and 8 slept in the back with the seat folded down while my dad drove straight thru.
Beautiful Car
awesome miss thise cars the wagon was perfect size
Our family had a 1980 Futura during the early 80s. A 255 V8, which was dependable, if not particularly quick, yet it was still running years later after going cross country many times. Most users preferred the slightly larger 302 V8, for more power and torque, yet in any case it was a decent no nonsense car.
My mom had one just like that except no pwr windows. It was such a usefull car. we hadthe adequate str8 6. But I love the boxed design. I especially love the 2 door square tops..I say classic...simple and understated...
Has front vent windows, that open! What a rarity!!!!
my dad had one of these with the 255 thrift master I6.. drove us to Florida and back home 1400miles each way from new york...if i could have one of these baby's id always take care of it... ours finally rusted away in our backyard from sitting...it had 289,000 miles and it still ran but tranny rear seal was bad so it leaked fluid bad and wasnt worth fixing due to the condition of the car.. my family owned many fairmants and even a futura coupe.. i loved that car. fox bodys had so much potential
Sweet looking car. I had a neighbour when I was a boy who had a Ford Fairmont wagon. It wasn't as nice as this, but it wasn't bad. Since I haven't seen the family in over 20 yrs. I wouldn't know what became of the Fairmont. Whether they sold it, or whether it got wrecked, etc.
My mom had an '81 Fairmont wagon!
If you're looking for a practical low budget classic, these cars are it.
this is my dream...
“Look at that wood “‘whoa buddy !
My first car was one of these babies - an '82. Looked pretty much just like this one, except the exterior was silver and the interior was gray. Beautiful wood panels inside & out - sturdy construction on just about everything in it. Nice, simple engine. Unfortunately, that clear sealant tape on the exterior trim was always the first to go on 'em, especially if they were stored outside in sunlight.
amazing!
The closest GM equivalent was the FWD J-bodies (Celebrity/Cutlass Ciera etc.). And the G-bodies.

And Aspen/Volare for Mopar.
The Scheels man yeah the Scheels
I think I'd like a Metallic Pea Family Truckster!
The horn button is in the turn signal stalk on these cars.Push it straight into the steering column to sound.
Ford Australia called the upper spec versions of our Falcon the Fairmont and Fairmont Ghia, but they share next to nothing except the name with this car. Cool car though! We had Falcon Squire wagons in the 60's, but long gone by 1978.
"Now everybody! Have you heard? If you're in the game, then stroke's the word!" Oh! Wrong "Squire"! 😁😁😁
sigh i miss the days when cars had real bumpers.
i slept in the back of ome of thse on the way to florida
The Fairmonts were very lightweight. The doors and all the body parts just felt flimsy.
hi nathan just curious how are the power windows..are they all operational?
I would have loved to have had that, but bringing it to Jersey, between the salt water air and the road salt, probably would have turned to dust in no time
No that Cruise Control was either a dealer add on or a Sears add on. If this came from the factory the Cruise Control would be on the steering wheel like on all fox and panther platforms from 1979-1991.
I had a 1978 that was maroon.Very basic car with ps and pb only.Traded it for a Granada wagon. The Fairmont was much better. The Granada loved to eat brake pads and was not as powerful and rode no better.
Falcon > Maverick > Fairmont > Tempo > Contour > Fusion. Also, Fairmont > LTD (midsized) > Taurus > 500 > Taurus.
A yellow 1978 Ford Fairmont Squire with 1976 Ford Pinto front end bumper as The Watterson's car with license plate "ODH 22" in The Amazing World of Gumball: Season 2.

Yes.
Drop a 351 v8 in that thing and you have a sleeper !
Good Luck trying to find a tail lamp assembly for this car. Hadn't seen one of these things in years. I worked on tons of these old Fairmonts years and years ago. They weren't the prettiest cars, but they were very practical, no-nonsence cars, with not much to go wrong with them. A 79 with a factory radio/cassette player... this was a "top of the line" model. The cruise control is not factory, it is what is called "dealer installed" most likely.
Wasn't George Costanza an importer/exporter too? 😄
This car is very similar to the station wagon from the amazing world of gumball
Car must have been initially ordered as a dealer's demonstrator. Back in the day the dealer would order a loaded up car with every option so he could demonstrate the options in order to entice customers to buy them when they ordered a car.
I say its a classic
Which old ladies garage did you find that in?
And they are not called "wing windows".... they are called vent windows. If you buy this car, make damn sure to block the vaccuum supply off to the EGR valve. They had a nasty habit of burning out the plate that the valve mounted to under the carburator.
Funny how this is almost identical to a Chrysler K-Wagon. Very similar size and look. Seats fold down exactly the same way by a single button in the center of the backrest.

Larger than the K, 79.5 cubic feet versus vs. 67. Fairmont/LTD and Taurus were the largest domestic post-'78 midsize wagons by EPA interior volume.
My neighbors have an LTD country squire. That thing is a fucking land yacht!
@Jallandhara Me too, it was peaceful.
They used this car for TAWOG.

K bonita
Looks like the wattersons car
I love this little Squire and just wish it had the V-8 in it!
For a wagon that's fully equipped but NO rear defogger and NO rear washer/wiper?!
perrona tenía una fue mi consentida
Is this the one that as on eBay for a while last year? This is my dream car and I'll soon be able to afford it. I don't suppose it is for sale...? Or ever will be?

+Cereal Marshmallows Ahh, such is life. I drooled over this car for years. Now that I've actually got some money saved up, it's just a matter of waiting for one of these sweet 'baby wagons' to come up for sale. You're spot on in the video-I'll never find one that clean. A Fairmont sedan was my first car. Thanks for giving such a detailed look at such a cool wagon. :)
Emissions equipment ruined the 200 Six!
I miss the dead end.
This one seems a bit more sporty than the country squire
some one should do a viedo on you tube if they can of the 1978-1983 ford fairmont police package cars and mercury zepyrs police cars i read how in a police car book i have the police ford fairmonts were slow slugish a few were kind of fast the 1980 ford fairmont police cars wheezed and sputtered the quarter mile at 112 miles per hour top speed i think they were the 140ci's or something like that a few were 255ci's and a few higher than that but i would like to see a ford fairmont cop car viedo
Last great american station wagon was the Dodge Magnum SRT-8
The play in the steering could be the rag joint. fallow the steering shaft from under the master cylinder to where it connects off the steering box. there is a donut like connector with 4 bolts, chances are that donut is broken apart. I replaced one last summer on my 76 Monarch
Too bad my 1982 Ford Fairmont Futura doesn't look this good.
esta muy austero
why? what was wrong with it?
Ok I'll go $600 no more.
that cruise control isn't factory, unless ford was too cheap and used a zip tie to put a cruise control function on a turn signal lol.
bezzles
Gound vagon ford
40K original miles. No surprise there. It didn't get driven much because nobody wanted to be seen in it. LOL .Ford made some really really ugly cars in the late seventies and eighties.
