Ford F150 5.0L Coyote V8 Engine Towing **Heavy Mechanic Review** | Better then the EcoBoost??

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I review a 2023 Ford F150 5.0L coyote V8 engine as a heavy duty mechanic and compare it to the 3.5L EcoBoost when it comes to towing. I compare acceleration, torque, fuel economy (mpg), engine braking and generally how each engine tows a heavy loaded trailer. Overall both f150 engines are good at towing.

I hope everyone is having a good week. As per your request I put the 5L V8 coyote engine against the 3.5l ecoboost and compared both of them for their towing ability.
the first thing I noticed with the 5L is that the low end torque is not there in comparison to the ecoboost. this results in the 5L engine having the revv much higher to get the same power to the wheels.
the F150 chassis was once again very solid and handles the large loaded trailer pretty easily for a 1500. one thing that surprised me was that the truck dropped an extra 3/4" with the exact same load. very interesting as to why that was the case because these are the exact same trucks.
in the acceleration test to 70mph the 5L kept up with the ecoboost very well. the ecoboost is a very fast engine and was still a little quicker with the fully loaded trailer behind it.
both these truck have 3.31 gears in them as well as the 10 speed transmission so there should be no difference on that front other then the ecoboost being able to stay in higher gears because of the low end torque.
when towing on the highway the biggest difference to me was that the 5L coyote engine had to constantly downshift in order to maintain speed. meaning the truck was always at higher rpms.
dispite the 5L coyote engine having higher RPMS it was significantly more fuel efficient which was a surprise to me. in comparison to the 3.5L ecoboost the 5L used much less fuel over the towing test and it just goes to show how thirsty that ecoboost engine really is.
overall I liked the 5L towing. I think it has plenty of upper end power to help pull those heavier trailers and I don't think you can go wrong buying either the ecoboost or the 5L for a towing application.
I hope you guys liked the video!

My dad and I had a ton of conversations about which engine/truck he should order. He landed on the Coyote 5.0 in a 2022 King Ranch. Long story short, I now have the truck and it does have the Max Tow with 3.73 gears(12,980 lbs towing due to options/trim). There is no lack of power and the fuel economy is downright impressive even with the stop sign sized tow mirrors. Coming from multiple small performance turbo engines in the past, the 5.0 really has impressed me.

That has been confirmed with an app, the dash tends to read .4-1.0 MPG high, but very impressive IMO for a 4x4 full size truck with a 36 gallon tank and no stop-start. So far I haven't been able to definitively identify when the deactivation is being used. I have some signs I suspect indicate it can't decide(instant mpg fluttering), but from a usability or issues standpoint, it doesn't have an impact. The method they used is pretty unique since it is DOHC, and I suspect it isn't going to cause many issues.

GET a OIL CATCH CAN FOR PVC VALVE, SIMPLE ADD ON!!! I did and it catches so much oil that is no longer being feed back to engine intake, it's a must, carbon on the back of the valves Wrecks the Engine long term.

I personally would prefer the 5.0 over the ecoboost in this class of truck. My current Ranger has an ecoboost and while the torque is amazing (similar to the 3.5 where peak torque is at like 2500 RPM) I find myself getting better mpg and feeling more comfortable when towing when I lock out the overdrive gears to keep the RPMs a bit higher like the 5.0 here does. With the turbo motor, you’re running in a lower gear with more low-rpm boost which is hard on the motor and also kills your mpg. The turbo motors are great and have amazing power but longevity and cost of ownership wise the n/a v8 is hard to beat

And running a v8 at a much higher rpm’s is much harder and causes much more wear. Any engine can perform better with a lockout of an overdrive gear, there are 3 on a 10 spd trans, it would be foolish to run an engine lugging with a load. The v8 has to run at 4000 rpm to make good power, it won’t be able to go into an overdrive gear, and then who wants to listen to an engine scream at those rpm for 8 hrs..

Ding, ding, ding!!! Finally someone else gets it. Coyote is designed to spin. Let it spin. It's amazing how strong the 18-20 5L trucks are to be able to run on 87 octane, and redlining at only 6K RPM. Ford neutered it with that low redline, but it still did pretty well in spite of it. Even a stock truck manifold will happily let the engine spin past 7K RPM without a significant power drop. BTW a Coyote isn't a lowend dog that people make it out to be. It feels LS1 torquey, down low, while being more linear. I remember the first time I drove a GEN1 Coyote Mustang I was very impressed by how efficiently it pulled itself into its powerband from its weak spot. It didn't linger around trying to lug itself into it's higher RPM the way something like a N/A 4.6L 4V used to. This was a M6/3.31 car BTW.

This is the same argument that has been going on between gas and diesel guys for decades now. Bottom line is a major reason a diesel engine lasts so long is because it turns less rpm's than a gasser. It's no different here. Ford has incorporated some of those same principles into these ecoboost engines. Exchanging rpm's for boost has been a winning tradeoff for a long time now.

  • @thomassullivan1207

@@KLX300RMIKE That's partly why. Just as (if not more) importantly the nature of diesel, it lubricates the engine as it burns fuel, and generally speaking, diesel engines are build much more durable to handle the higher compression. That's why they weigh so much more.

@@markmccarty9793Raw weight is (obviously) a huge factor. However personally I’d second the opinion that aerodynamics play a slightly larger role. I have a harder time pulling a fully enclosed trailer at highway speeds than some heavier loads on a flatbed. For lightweight/short wheel base half ton trucks, I feel like the trailer bucking around is harder on an f150 than pure weight. Of course that is so long as you’re within the rated towing capacities of course.

The ecoboost motors have a lot more plumbing because of the turbos and tend to develop leaks much easier, they also like to break exhaust manifold bolts because they build so much heat with the turbos, they aren’t as easy to work on because they have a lot more going on in the engine bay. They tend to be better on fuel economy actually, unless you drive an ecoboost like a senior citizen haha. And they sound 100x better but that’s just a matter of opinion. Great video, it's nice you are able to compare apples to apples between trucks! As I understand it efficiency when towing is heavily linked to how close to the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio you can achieve. Stochiometric air-fuel combustion is way too hot (lean) so all vehicles add more fuel to cool down the engine to acceptable temperatures, the difference here is the larger displacement engine has more surface area to dissipate heat so can run closer to stoichiometric air-fuel than the smaller displacement engine, requiring less fuel to be used only to cool the engine and proportionately more is involved in the combustion process. Obviously a lot more than that is at play but that seems to be a big component from what I have seen. Regarding the shifting of the transmission it appears similar to the logic used in the previous generation 6R80, I find that transmission will shift 1 gear per 2-3km/hr based on double OD (6th). So if I climb a hill starting in 6th at 110km/hr, it will drop to 5th at 107, 4th at 105, 3rd at 103. If I start the hill in the 4th, it still will not downshift to 3rd until 103. Similarly for speed above cruise control for descending hills.

All modern vehicles run at stoic most of the time. Well, to be technically correct, they 'dither' (bounce back and forth) from barely lean to barely rich multiple times per second. This is critical to keep catalytic converters functioning as efficient as possible and engines would not pass the emissions tests otherwise. Also the definition of stoic is that the mixture is neither lean or rich. It's only lean if the air fuel ratio is higher than stoic (generally above 14.7 afr for gasoline or above lambda 1) and is only rich if it is below stoic (

The turbo chugs fuel under load way WAY more than the coyote, & my 5.0 also came as a start stop delete due to the 2022 chip shortage, its a win win all the way around. With a 5,000lb dual axle trailer behind me it squats very little - unless I have a couple 55 gallon drums full of liquid in the bed. I have a 2011 truck. First year 5 liter. I'm pleased with it so far. I got it used a short time ago and find it more economical than my old 1995 with the 302 of that era, and economy is better on the later one. The reason I switched is the towing capacity is roughly double the 1995 model towing capacity. But the reason I went with the 5.0, is maintenance and reliability. Turbos are temperamental ond expensive. I'll live with a little performance hit to avoid the hot to my wallet. But about the shift points, I would prefer the behavior in the video. When towing a trailer and using cruise control, it would be much more fuel efficient to let the speed drift up and down a lot. Unfortunately my older model is mapped to keep it tighter. I can see the gas gauge dropping faster when it's so sensitive and does a downshift to gain 5 mph. If I had it my way, I would have gotten a manual transmission, but that's no longer offered.

I would LOVE to see this same truck/engine combination tow this same gauntlet equipped with 3.73 gears. It seems to me that the ecoboost is better suited to 3.31's, while the coyote is better suited to 3.73's. Would the 5.0 tow better with 3.73's? Would fuel economy suffer greatly (or at all)? Inquiring minds want to know!

You would have a 1-2mpg difference. It’s worth it , very negligible differences. My 2wd 5.0 on 3.31 would do 16 city , 24 mpg highway. The avg read out would be at 21mpg. There is no difference in fuel economy if you’re hauling a heavy load in the bed. I would get 16-18mg towing a loaded (2k# load) 2500# 12’ dual axle U-Haul trailer for common reference.

It would absolutely tow better it would give it the low end torque like the ecobust has. Practically every 3.5 ecobust with the “towing Pkg” I see on dealer lots has 3.73 gears. I truly believe it’s the gear ratio that gives the ecobust it’s great towing numbers instead of the engine. I’ve had both and I’ll take a correctly ordered F150 5.0, 3.73 maximum towing package over a F250 (gas).

Always fun in these V8 vs boost videos when they explain the V8 is specifically designed for higher RPM then they use RPM as the main comparison. It’s as if they don’t understand what boost is. You get higher peak torque with a boosted engine, that’s the point of boost, and it means peak torque comes at lower rpm. The coyote is specifically designed to go higher rpm when under load. It’s not a flaw or a disadvantage (look at the gas mileage comparison) it’s designed to do that. It won’t downshift doing up a hill to maintain speed if you’re in “tow/haul” mode. That’s the way the mode is designed. It improves fuel economy and prevents gear searching. If you don’t like that, take it out of “tow/haul”. The boosted engine is great if that’s what you like, but the “eco” in ecoboost goes out the window when under load. It’s “eco” if you’re driving w nothing in it or on it. The coyote has gone through several generations and is tried and true. The boosted engine is great, but will likely require more upkeep for these first generations.

Maybe I missed it in the video's but did you only rely on the computer fuel usage (resetting the fuel usage at the start) or did you actually do fill-up to fill-up like the "The Fast Lane Truck" boys do, to work out the fuel mileage? Otherwise, a great Canadian feed!

I have a 22 5.0L with the trailer tow package and 7050# GVW package, which I need because I work out of my truck and keep my Decked drawers full of tools all the time, adding about 600lbs of weight. I regularly tow my 7,000 lb camper long distances and can't be happier with this setup. I get between 18 and 19 mpg doing day to day driving (without the camper of course). My 2020 F150 had the 2.7L ecoboost engine, which was a great motor but I was getting only 16 to 17 mpg with the same toolbox in the truck. I upgraded to the 5.0 when we decided to pull the camper long distances and I couldn't be happier with the setup. I have found on normal interstate driving (fairly flat conditions) I prefer to keep the transmission in normal mode and get better mpg but once I'm off the interstates, tow/haul is better. I noticed that in tow/haul mode, the transmission shifts down much sooner after stepping on the brake than in normal mode. And the stop sign sized tow mirrors are just amazing, lol.

Our camper maxed out is 7995 but the handful of times I've weighed it, it comes to roughly 6995 so roughly the same is what you've got. I'm hesitant since the F250 weighs more to help with pulling a sail down the road but I'm assuming you're not white-knuckling when pulling your camper? I appreciate your thoughts and thank you.

I've got a 2015 5.0. I tow a camper a lot. In talking with other owners with ecoboosts I decided that non towing the ecoboost engine turbo doesn't open up much and gets great mileage, but towing it does and it drinks gas at that time. Anyway, I got the 5.0 primarily because I tow a lot. Yes the ecoboosts tow well but it's not a critical difference and to get a small engine to rev up a lot using a turbo a lot of the time is a tall ask wear wise and a lot of gas.

OKAY - here goes! This is a lightweight spec truck. Designed for fuel economy ans a comfortable ride. First of all it has 17" wheels and 4 ply tires so the capacities are not expected to be high. This is for a compliant sidewall and low unsprung weigh. These wheels are rated 500 lbs lower then the heavier 18" wheels. The second issue is the 3.31's on a 5.0L only comes with the light weight/ high fuel economy rear Super 8.8" axle, which is rated to a max payload capacity of 3800 lbs. All 3.5L Ecoboosts and the 5.0L with 3.73's run Ford's 9.75" rear floating axle which is rated at a max of 5300 lbs which Ford artificially derates to 4800 lbs using lower wheel and tire ratings.

I wonder how much of the thirstiness of that ecoboost is up to tuning. I'll bet they're running it fairly rich so it can take 87 while under boost without knocking...would also explain the peak torque being at low RPM even given the turbos are tiny twins. Most of my turbo vehicles take 91 minimum and run pretty lean on stock tune but make more low down torque when you crank up the wastegate duty cycles and run them a bit richer. Also wonder if the engine running lower down in the rev range on average is going to make it last longer than the V8. I don't own either (I'm a cummins guy) so no bias but I'm genuinely curious about the viability of a little turbo gasser since it's not the norm. The coyote will always sound better and if I were going to lease 1 of the 2 it would obviously be the V8...but there's a lot you can do with a tuner on these ecoboost trucks.

Seen both engines come thru the door with 300k+ miles. Seen em both broken with just hundreds of miles. Done a significant amount of towing with both configurations. If you wanna wind your engine thru the hood at 7k rpms, fine by me. My tuned 3.5 will do the same job at 3500rpm. Tens of thousands of miles of proof. We obviously use our trucks for different things. But hey, what do I know

I went with the 5.0’s on my trucks, with a tow tune, picking up better throttle response, better low rpm torque, (about 25lb ft) it makes it even more capable, all while still having much less stress on components by stuffing so much air/fuel in the smaller 3.5 Ecoboost to make the power. 240,000 miles each and still going strong, I tow 6000-13000 regularly

@@KLX300RMIKE In gen 1, They still both have forged crank, Both have piston cooling jets, Both have o ring seals on cooling lines but with Ecoboost having WAY higher coolant temps and coolant pressures. The exhaust manifolds on Ecoboost are also cast iron but have MUCH higher heat cycles. The biggest difference is the cooling system. The 5.0 is pretty reliable to 650rear wheel horsepower under boost on the trucks, does that mean you should tow every day with it like that. The biggest problem I see if towing alot is that continual high heat cycles is really hard on things, especially when you have dissimilar expansion rate materials with gaskets between them. Those are the spots that will fail earlier, and at higher mileage be higher maintenance because of that. There is a high mileage review from an Ecoboost on youtube and it has pretty done well, the guy has detailed records of maintenance. I can’t remember what part, something to do with the throttle body, he carries a spare in his glove compartment, because it fails regularly from heat. I want things to work, without worry and like never break, so I got the 5.0, so far it has definitely been the better choice.

@@paulhunter9613 The Ecoboost, because of not having vaccum, and being in light boost at 50-60% throttle probably has similar engine pressures compared to the 5.0 at Full throttle. The difference in pressures between the two are not even comparable. When you stuff air in, even at low boost the pressures go way up. If you figure full throttle, on the 5.0, at 340lbft at rear wheels, and ask the Ecoboost to do the same exact output, which is down from peak, meaning not full throttle, the Ecoboost has to put out 30% MORE power per cylinder volume, that is a LOT of extra pressure, and cylinder sidewall load, heat. Meaning the 5.0 is working way less at Full throttle then the Ecoboost that may “FEEL” like it is “Hardly working”. I will take the 5.0 for longevity, all day.

The Hemi has to run 4k to 5k RPM up the hill to flagstaff with my 18 foot trailer and can am where my F-150 ecoboost rarely broke 3500 rpms. Unloaded my ecoboost would stay locked in overdrive and run the grades at 2k rpm

The truck still struggles at low rpm. It really comes alive in higher rpms. It sounds amazing! I love to rev it, but I end up HAVING to rev it all the time. I do tow a 25 foot boat with it that is about 6,800 lbs. It can tow it, but it’s not a very happy truck. Overall, it’s a great truck and my own modifications have benefited certain characteristics of the truck and hurt others. The worst part of the truck is the AC system. Terrible. Anyhow, I’m actively looking for another rig but not having a truck payment is certainly very nice.

I tow often and also have payloads in bed in my company truck. Now in my humble opinion, the ecoboost tows better, and just overall is more work horse ready than 5.0. I hated the 21 5.0 for towing especially going up hill , it struggled and didn’t know what gear to be in . Now when i towed with 2.7 company truck, it outperformed it. It didn’t struggle uphill , it wasn’t all over place trying find gears. Now fuel economy, i learned putting ecoboost in towhaul netter better mpg, I can’t explain why if maybe different locking strategy on converter ? Or maybe just holds gear better and stays out of boost. Keeping ecoboost out boost will net you good mpg. Overall, being unbiased i prefer eco as work horse and longevity , the 21+ 5.0 performs better towing and payload than 18-20.
