    So, Eric, without your opinions and banter these would be just another repair video like the hundred others on YT we could watch. We watch BECAUSE of the opinions and chit chat, not in spite of. I don't care how many brake job videos you make, when you post the next one I will enthusiastically watch it. Why? Because every one of your videos is unique and I learn something every time. Don't ever stop sharing your stream of consciousness - it's what makes SMA the absolutely best car channel on YT, bar none!!

    Anyone that is offended by your opinions, should unsubscribe from everything. Everyone! I do mean everyone is entitled to their opinions and sooner or later they will express one you are offended by. Dig a whole, crawl in, scrap the dirt in over your head. You can crawl back out once your all growed up and can accept that people have differing opinions. TO be honest I don't agree with all of Eric's opinions. That being said, I respect his right to not only have them but his right to express them. Be good, be cool, and be safe!

    Personally I think the opinions of a good mechanic who works on a lot of different make cars is worth gold. Any hack auto reviewer can tell you that a car handles nicely or has good pick-up or the 4WD system works well, but a mechanic is the only person who can tell you how well that car is or isn't built. At least to me that handling/pick-up/4WD doesn't matter if the suspension is made of tinsel or the engine eats head gaskets or the 4WD system is held together with plastic push-pins.

    Mechanics are like everyone else. They often have their favorite makes, and not so favorite makes of vehicle. And often times they will trash a vehicle they don't like when it has a certain problem or problems, when a vehicle that they do like may have a problem just as bad, or maybe even worse , but it's ok with them because they like that one.

    I'm changing the heads on my 2008 Equinox as a do it yourselfer. I wanted to record the whole procedure in several parts seeing as I have almost all the time in the world. The day I started the project I ran into so many obstacles that I just gave up on the video making. It would have been a good video too as my Dexcool turned into mud, and I found cracks on both heads. I just got soooo frustrated with everything though and kept thinking to myself ... "how in the world are people able to record all of their projects and still have time to complete their projects?". YOU Eric O specifically came to mind first. Thank you, and ALL the KZreadrs out there, (even the less than perfect video makers), that have made it possible for all of us DIY's out there. You guys have helped turn the wild, wild internet into something really useful that helps many people from all walks and lands. Thank You Eric O and everyone else.

    Dexcool is a crap product. That junk turned to mud in my S-10 Blazer and clogged up my heater core and caused a leak. Fifty bucks for the part and 800.00 to put it in because the car was built around the core. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I didn't take it to GM but where I took it they didn't put Dexcool in it but they would not admit Dexcool was the cause but I knew it was after ready all the horror stories on the internet.

    Yeah but you have to give Eric O a lot of credit for respecting the viewers comments. Not everyone is gonna agree with Eric O but he doesn't attack him like other creators. He just states that he "calls um as he sees um" and gives the viewer the option to unsubscribe. I really appreciate Eric O. Professionalism by not being a negative force towards his comments. Haha Eric you had me laughing about the viewer stating you should keep your opinions to yourself. Firstly this is your channel and everyone here has the capability to scroll or watch. I prefer to watch even if you don't care for a certain auto manufacturer that I may or may not like. I loved Chevy growing up but they just don't deliver anymore. I find that most foreign auto makers do a better job nowadays. It is sad but just a fact. I love made in America but I can't spend thousands on a vehicle that just won't last. Thank you for your honesty as a mechanic and I think we all love that you take pride in what you do.

    Hi again Eric, here's an update: I just did a heavy maintenance on my '13 (new hubs, IWEs, both sides) I took a photo of the IWE I took out. I stuck a magnet to it to show you. Turns out the only aluminum in the IWE is the vacuum control diaphragm. The actual teeth in the IWE are steel. (I wish I could post it here) So, the Ford OEM IWEs are even sturdier than WARN locking hubs (which can be bad and good). Better to have the IWEs, like Fords, than leaving the front running gear all hooked up so you can kill your gas mileage even more than necessary. If you wish me to send you the photo, shoot me an email or text (LMK how you want to handle that. Ford has been ahead of the game for decades, *constantly* making changes/improvements all along. Now Chevy and Fiat are doing all they can to make up for lack luster engineering in a short period of time. And the results are far from ideal. I truly hope you can see past your prejudices. A really helpful video though, thank you!

    I’ve been building the Ford F-250, 350, 450 & 550 here at Kentucky Truck Plant since July ‘93. So obviously, I’m bias to Ford trucks. However, ALL successful auto makers create bad designs, have faulty parts, have recalls, etc. Mistakes drive improvement & innovation. All due respect Eric, I don’t really care one way or the other what type of vehicles you personally like. As for Ford trucks (F Series), I think their history speaks for itself entering it’s 42nd year as the best selling truck. More than 32 million F-Series have been made to date and on average two are sold every minute. That doesn’t happen because they suck. 🤣 I watch your channel to learn about ALL auto repairs & because you make auto repair fun & interesting. I also think the dynamic of your family owned & operated business speaks to people. Back in the late ‘80’s, I worked for Nationwise Auto Parts as a manager, service writer, parts salesman & occasionally worked in the shop. I kinda miss it & think that what you have going is really cool. Keep up the good work! You do high quality work & the videos are great!

    First of all, tell Mrs. O happy mother's day from me! Second, let me be the one to say "thank you" for being the diligent and insightful mechanic to see that the inner seal for the CV axle needed to be replaced and actually did the work while you were conveniently in there. Most shops would have just overlooked that item since they are just parts changers and not taught to see future potential problems. I've always been like, "repair or replace any needed item while you're already in that vicinity since the additional labor is nothing compared to having to rip it all apart again at a later date." You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see all the quality aspects of Eric O's videos. Sit back, learn, and appreciate the best quality you will ever receive from an automotive mechanic. The old daily driver is gonna be coming north for its needed repairs soon. Watch out!

    Gotta love the engineering in today's vehicles. Pretty soon, once they're out of warranty, we'll be towing them to the scrapyard. Seems to be the way auto manufacturers are headed these days ... 🤢 I've had a few Big Nasty fails like that. The rust is pretty bad around the Northeast - every so often, she meets her match! 4 lb. sledge usually fixes that. Finally got my floor poured on Saturday!! It's a thing of beauty. Guys are coming back sometime today to cut reliefs across it. Then I just have to install the side door, and make a ramp of gravel so the concrete edge doesn't get smashed, and I'm ready! I do still have to move about 40 tons of equipment and tools into there, though - that's gonna be a project in and of itself. Every step is another step closer though! 👍 Gotta get back at it - sounds like we've got hit by the same wave of work! Great vid - keep 'em comin' (when you have time!). 👍👍

    I'm not exactly a ford lover but they are my choice for trucks. I owned an 09 f150 for a while (that has this 4x4 system) I ended up selling it because I hated that underpowered 4.6 motor, and anemic 4 speed transmission. It was a new looking truck that drove like it was from 1995 because of it, just not enough power or gears. And it got 12mpg. But honestly I really liked the truck. Very comfortable, good looking and it was actually really reliable. The 4 wheel drive worked great in that truck, and I used it at least once a week and almost daily in the winter. It does take a second to engage which is annoying, and if you don't back up a foot or two after you engage 4x4 the IWE units can make a ratcheting sound but once it's locked in it works fine. I wouldn't exactly call them extremely failure prone like you said. I took that truck some places it should've never gone and my 4x4 never failed me. It's definitely a little chinsy but it works.

  • @SouthMainAuto

    It just baffles me that Ford is adamant at perfecting a vacuum 4x4 system. That have tried numerous vacuum hubs and always change the design after a few years and have so many failure points. I just don't understand myself....

  • @brad8665

    @brad8665

    6 жыл бұрын

    South Main Auto Repair I agree. It needed a re design and vacuum definitely is not the best choice for a 4x4 engagement system. But that being said the IWE units are kind of failsafe. They actually disconnect in the presence of vacuum. No vacuum means they're locked in. So if you were to have a vacuum leak your 4x4 would still work but the CV axles just wouldn't disengage in 2wd. And I think some sort of hub/disconnect at the wheel is a good idea because the CVs, and front diff/ driveshaft don't need to be turning in 2wd. Less wear on drivetrain and better fuel economy. But ford just went about it wrong. And on the super dutys the vacuum hubs have a "lock" setting so you can still manually lock them in if the vac. System fails.
